I'm pretty sure it's magic. It's kinda explained in the beginning. She's one of the only humans with the ability to communicate with animals. She could be given other animal abilities too.

Bro same. For me it was the dolphin. I think I was scared of the dolphin cuz he low key was mean to the girl. Even now re-watching the scene where he’s telling the girl she’ll be useless gives me the chills.

Omg I watched this as a kid too and it left a big impact on me now I am scared of whales and the big deep ocean. I tried to find it and I found it. It is so nostalgic to me even now watching it I still have the same fear and yes the whale sounds and the music are scary lol...
