Connie Hines would best be known for playing Carol Post, Wilbur's wife on the t.v. series Mister Ed.

Daytime "Dotto" had been on the air only since January 1958 on CBS; nighttime "Dotto" was on NBC in the summer of 1958; both versions were canceled in August of that year because a standby contestant, Ed Hilgemeier, produced evidence that a winning contestant, Marie Winn, had been furnished with answers to the questions and the identities of the faces she had to identify to win.

Interestingly, Winn became a writer, and one of her books was about the effect of television on children...THE PLUG-IN DRUG.

Excellent observation as to the correct year, with supporting chronological points of reference as evidence. Thanks 👍! Also as a vintage car.aficionado, the 1958 Lincoln convertible shown as a recent prize wouldn't be around in 1956. That was my first unique identifier on first askance.

Winn was seen by Hilgemeier writing in a notebook. It got his attention, when she went on air, he took a look, and soon realized it was the answers on the show - one after the other. He tore out the page and went to the losing contestant, showed her the page, they went to the producers.

"Dotto" only was on the air for eight months (daytime) and two months (prime-time), with the daytime version premiering in January, 1958 and the prime-time version in June, 1958. Both versions were abruptly cancelled late in the day of August 15, 1958 after it was learned that the show was rigged. Although the daytime version on CBS was in black-and-white, I think the nighttime version on NBC was broadcast in co!or, although only black-and-white kinescopes exist of the NBC prime-time version.

DOTTO had become the #1 daytime game show within weeks of its debut--but CBS had no flexibility to schedule a prime-time version.--hence their permitting sponsor Colgate-Palmolive to air it on NBC.

The off-camera announcer went by the name of Ralph Paul. Does anybody know his real last name? I'm not sure, but I think I knew him in the 1970s and '80s.

Well, the contestant herself didn't know and I couldn't understand why because by just looking at the top of the picture, it tells you right off that it has to be a picture of Julius Caesar!

@@jeremyprice7256 people in the ‘50s didn’t have the knowledge or perception we have today. Remember - this show aired in a time when you could come right out of high school and get a good paying job (if you were male).

Little did Connie Hines realize she was going to play second fiddle to a horse after reading that telegram! And the new gold-foil box for Fab provided a few surprises when it caused flashes on the screen (and not from a wash that was "clean clear through," either)

BTW who owns the rights to Dotto in case anyone want a fair and honest reboot? Since I'm unable to put fifty dots on a comment, here's a clue the producers might use after the 25th dot: "From Penn to Tenn". Any guesses out there?

Dotto has been revived and aired for awhile in England, where it was very successful and not rigged.

That home viewer prize would be over $100K in today's money...the Lincoln cost $7,000 (a figure that could get you three VW Beetles and a Ford or Chevy) The daytime version offered a pair of more modest cars...the episode out on YT has a matched set of Edsels.

@@tomservo56954, I feel bad for whoever won the twin Edsels. Those probably spent more time in the repair shop than on the road.

@@dillysgirl4everLikely Dotto got the Edsels for a good price, it was said they tried to give them away to police departments and other agencies, with few or no takers.
