I'd say in our society(USA), you should invest in a single breasted first.It's more versatile and more suitable for every occasion. But after your dark charcoal and navy single breasted, go for a double breasted because that will make a statement that you know what you are doing with your style, more confident, more established.

My grandma took me in the 10th grade to buy a suit for my school's annual semi formal dance. I was looking at some and she came up to me with a double-breasted navy blue suit. I've got a tailor made Ivory double breasted, which is my first DB suit. I would add to start with simple colors and patterns (unlike me) when getting into them. Makes pairing them with shoes, shirts and ties so much easier.

I like this debates but just like in the leather vs. denim jackets, the outcome is just in which order get what. In that video, I think the denim jacket should be the first one to get and the leather one second because of the price basically. With the suits here, the single one might be more versatile, but the double should also be part of a man´s wardrobe, perhaps second place because its more complex to use. As they said, you should be more careful with the accesories, and the fit must be perfect to pull it off as its supposed to be. While they fit, you look good. Anyways, love the style of this guys!!

Blake wins for me, a single breasted suit is the most versatile. Here in the UK the DB suit is associated strongly with prince Charles who wears them all the time so it tends to be an older look. Just an aside George, that lilac suit looks like fancy dress.

Only after having 12 single breasted two buttons (of all the required colors and fabrics and one in beige) and a tuxedo, I decided to buy 2 of double breasted. This shows the versatility and necessity of a mid lapel, European cut, two buttoned, single breasted suit; however, if someone is in shape and has a good v shaped torso, nothing beasts a peak lapel, double breasted suit (pin stripe or patterned).

You'll want to find an unlined or half-lined suit in a lightweight fabric like cotton or a cotton linen blend. Even a lightweight wool would be ok. -G

Well hi fello heat survivor, I live in Jacksonville! What is your budget? I can steer you the right way also on brands worth the price point. As George mentioned, you 100% need an unlined jacket in a breathable fabric for Spring and Summer here. What I personally have found work well is an all linen suit for summer and if you take the massive wrinkling into account. I'd say stick to a wool/linen blend, sometimes includes some silk or a tropical weight wool in an open weave like Hopsack. Suitsupply makes some amazing suits for the $399-599 range that can't be beat.

Well put together video as always. I prefer the double breasted and I wouldn't even think about buying single breasted these days. It is maybe like the saying that when you go black you never go back. I must say though that I prefer my blazers with four buttons instead of six as I don't think that the nipple buttons have any purpose or do anything good for the look to men. I always go with single breasted suits, I am 5'7" and I have wide shoulders, with double breasted jackets I look fat and I don't feel with the confidence that I want while wearing a suit, even though I love how it looks in other people like you George! Regards from Spain!

I disagree with a few points raised..a Double breasted suit is not to be worn so snugly as they suggest.It should have a relaxed fit, a bit roomy.Else, you cant wear it for too long.And it doesnt look good either.All said and done, a DB suit makes you look smarter provided the lapels are a bit wide and the suit a bit roomy.

While I am 100% agreed with you on the fact that a single breasted suit needs to be a man's first and second purchase, in the long run, a perfectly tailored double breasted suit especially something with a bit of character (chocolate brown flecked linen, power stripe wool, etc) or a double breasted blazer is a one two punch. I have a double from Brunello Cucinelli and it absolutely blows away any of my other suits in terms of compliments and street style shots and honestly, works just as well in a range of formal and casual looks. I find it much easier to work with my double breasted suits with a tonal square and just an open collar or even a solid color tee.

A question regarding the double breasted suit; I've recently purchased a burgundy colored double breasted velvet blazer, and I want to dress it down. I thought I would wear a white rollneck made from extra fine merino wool which makes it a lightweight handle, black trousers with folded hems , black minimalistic watch, a white pocket square and lastly the SHOES which part of me WANTS to have crisp, minimalistic sneakers (say like Common projects) which part of me is paranoid that it's TOO informal to wear with the outfit and a part of me says black oxford shoes.. what's your take on this? How far can we push the "informal" wear of a double breasted blazer?

Blake, just a question - why aren't you unbuttoning your jacket while sitting? George, i prefer the DB with wider lapels. In my opinion the lapels on this (blue?) jacket is a little narrow in my opinion. The light grey one is cool! i also think SB is more versatile and elongates the body because of the deeper V than the DB jacket, really useful for a shorter man. And ofc DB jacket is a statement. A well fitted one is awesome but my pick is always the single haha cheers!

I saw it on your insta and there is nothing wrong with the blazer itself. What might have been giving off the captain vibes could be the sunglasses and the white pants. Maybe keep it more simple and classic in the future with no specs, wear matching navy/black pants and finish the look with brown shoes. Then you can make it more complicated later on when you feel that you have nailed this look. Just my two cents.
