After 5yrs being away from riding, I'm retired now, and new to me 2005 wing back in the garage. Mind you back in the day, 5 state run was normal for us. Needless to say, I was double dark side. Runflat on rear, rear tire on front reversed. Excellent handling, especially at red lights wing wants to stay up right, and hwy speeds was a breeze, especially on I40. Even after 5 yrs being off the wing, I can tell the difference with the motorcycle tires. So once I wear these new tires down a bit, came with the wing. Im going back to the dark side. Thank you for your videos! God speed.

I would like to see the footage from the front if any. The before and after of the front does interest me. Informative on the behaviour of the tire with the footage. Thanks.

Glad your trying the Dark side and now double Dark side Chris... I ride GL1800 F6BD double Dark side love it. I have over 13,000 Miles on them now and I still have 1/2 of tread depth left on rear tire and more on front from new. Last year I head a Deer hit me causing me to run off the road, a lot of cosmetic damage was done to bike. Luckily not to me I always wear full gear. I took the bike to Honda dealer for repairs. When the Insurance company called me to talk about the incident and repairs { He went out on two different occasions to inspect bike} they NEVER said anything about the CAR tire on back or back tire on front. They even paid me for my scratched up Helmet and Boots. Ride Safe Brother!

The very first day, on the ride home from the shop, I picked up a nail in my brand new tire. I'm talking less than 5 miles on it. I got home took out the nail and plugged it. I drove that tire till it was bald and I never had an issue with that plug. The bike was a Honda Sabre, that I regularly rode past 100 miles an hour.
@baltsosser5 жыл бұрын
I did that on my V30 Honda Magna. I got 10K out of it after. The instructors at MMI gave me the stink eye when I was asked do we plug tires? "Not for customers." was my immediate answer.

I have also gone with a run flat car tire on my wing. It is great and for all the guys who are hating, you don't know till you try it. I know I'm not going back.. However if I was on a sports bike i would stay with a good bike tire as sport bikes are so light and the handling can be affected So easily.

I think you basically need a mud flap in the middle of the bike that has a good strong magnet, catch whatever steel the front kicks up.

Hi Chris new to the GW my question is have you heard of anybody putting a size 195/65R16 on I have a 2016 an I'm thinking about putting that size on because of the less rpm and I'd think you would get better mpg, also put the speedo near correct thanks Dave

Hey Chris. Great vids on dark siding. Quick question. How does dark siding affect gas mileage on a Goldwing? I'm liking what I'm hearing about dark siding. Still weighing it out to see if it's right for me. Also, do you use a radial or a bias ply? Keep the good vids coming my Brother. Stay safe and keep the rubber side down. Peace.

I always kid my Goldwing friends (I ride a Yamaha Warrior) that basically with all the perks, bells, whistles, radios, reverse gear, Mp3 players, intercoms, airbags, and more that a Goldwing is really just a Volkswagon Beetle with Two Wheels. You might as well put CT's on those Two Wheeled Cars. LOL! Keep the Rubber Side down and keep riding. Small bike shops will put them on happily.

I can concur, as my GoldWing got over 10,000 miles, in 8 years, on a Kumho car tire on the rear! I’m wondering what size car tire to put on the front of the GL1800?! Anybody know, for sure?

Ok I think when I wear out this tire I will go dark side . I've been thinking about for a long time. I bought a new Harley back and 07 and it went through a rear tire every 5,000 miles. I was going through three to four tires a year. Well I bought me another new Harley and only have 6,000 miles on this tire. To my surprise this new bike is not eating up the rear tire like the old bike. I will see how far it goes , but I think I will go darker side when I wear this tire out.

@briha3142 Жыл бұрын
A car dealership can do the change out, IF you take the rim off and take the rim to the dealership service Dept! However, their balance machine CANNOT balance a motorcycle rim, but you can balance it yourself with a straight axle thru it and two support posts, and then place sticky weights on the high side of the rim that keeps moving downward, until the rim no longer wants to move downward!

Hey Chris, I like the dark side and I'm with you on that brother man, I have a question for you about running a car tire , I ride a 1999 1500 SE and I've gone through two E 3s in one year w/ screws in the tire so I got ahold of the big guy at Dunlap and asked him why dont you put a light weight aluminum belt in a tire ? with ur Experience with tires do u know if I can fit a car tire on my wing ? And if so what size would you recommend ? William The river city wings

Hi Chris. Mike here from the UK (1981 GL1100 and 2004 GL1800). Just discovering your videos and vlogs and liking them. Back in the day I was a 365 all weather rider but 40 years on I'm spring to fall so only do c3,000 miles per year, mostly touring around sunny Europe. So I'll stick to standard tyres although I'm going to change the OEM Bridgestones to Dunlop E4's when the time comes. But, if I was doing 15k and going through a set each year I'd definitely switch to Double Dark Siding, but picking up on the insurance issue and your comments: I'm in insurance. Every type, and I mean EVERY type, of insurance is based upon "utmost good faith" which places the obligation on the insured (you and me) to disclose any material fact that might influence the insurer's decision, whether we are specifically asked or not. Bike policies always specifically ask if the bike has been modified from the factory spec. The GL1800 came out of the factory with Bridgestones or Dunlops so a change to Michelins for example does represent a modification but this is known as a like-for-like modification, so the same size and speed rating (just like fitting an aftermarket oil filter) and does not need to be reported to the insurer. But fitting a non-OEM tyre size and tyre type is a declarable modification and not declaring it will invalidate a claim (here in the UK anyway). Declaring it may or may not increase your premium slightly but you can sleep at night knowing that your insurance is valid and if you do have to pay a slightly higher premium it won't be the price 2 new tyres every year. So why risk it? As for claims. If you don't declare your Dark Side tyres and throw your 'wing down the road causing no damage to anyone or anything, and your insurer voids your claim for non-disclosure, it's only you who'll suffer. But if you cause damage to property or cause injuring or death to another person, including your first lady or friends, with voided insurance, you'll now face a law suit. Now, you won't be able to pay, none of us could, which is what insurance is for. So who's going to compensates the victims and how do you live with it? Dark Siders - TELL YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY.

Only thing I don't understand is why you put a conventional tire, not a radial on the front? In the case of my Valkyrie I will have to stay with a motorcycle tire on the front, due to the Valkyrie having a 19 inch front wheel. Nobody makes a car tire in 19 inch that skinny.
@kennethblack73766 жыл бұрын
Double Dark Side means you are still using a motorcycle tire on the front, just a larger motorcycle tire. The popular one is the Bridgestone Battle Ax and it is a bias ply tire. You can have a rear radial tire and a front bias ply tire.

Has anyone tried balancing beads instead of weights on their tires. I have them on my 1800 and they are keeping the tires balanced perfectly
@danaszalajeski44165 жыл бұрын
Roy Gosse, I’ve run balancing beads in my tires before, both glass and ceramic beads. They eat up the inside of the tire, and if you have a TPMS they will get damaged. When changing tires out the beads turned to power. After seeing the damage, I will never use beads again.
