Ok DOUBLE DARK SIDE IS TAKING THE LARGEST REAR MOTORCYCLE TIRE AND PUTTING IN ON THE FRONT THEN TURN IT BACKWARDS IN THE OPPOSING DIRECTION. STANDARD DARKSIDING CONSIST OF JUST PUTTING A CAR TIRE ON THE REAR.

I have been double darkside for over 30 years. Car tire on rear and normally a Shinko 777 series rear on the front. Sometimes I have reversed the rotatopn an sometime I have no, and have never notices any handing or wear differences. A rear tire normally has a thicker carcass. I have never had an issue yet. My current ride is a 1700 Kawasaki Voyager. I am a retired 24 year motor officer and put almost 300k miles on a 2002 Yamaha Venture doing the same thing.

Interesting story. Time passes so fast... I have been commuting to work on the motorbike for a few years, and motorcycle tires flatten quickly. My style of riding doesn't help, because it promotes staying in a straight line in the city. New tyres feel so good and stable though.

Well... I just installed a "Radar 195/65R16" car tire on my 2003 Goldwing. It was tight but got it in place without any prying tools. Looks good too. Also installed Eco beads for balancing.

I tried the dark side because I got tired of not being able to take a long trip without having to replace a tire just so I could complete the trip without having to change one on the road. They have been doing it forever. I’m in my 60’s and when I was a kid my neighbor owned Harley’s and Indians and a 4 cylinder Henderson and I remember helping him mount car tires on them for the very same reason that they are doing it today and I remember them having the same exact argument as they are now. My neighbors answer was I have no problem with you not wanting to do it. The problem I have is you telling me how stupid I am for doing something that I have been doing for years without a single issue. Keep up the good work Chris, you have a new follower. Maybe i’ll see you on the road someday TJ

Tires Directional Arrows Explained By Avon Tyres Published by Cyril Huze August 23rd, 2009 in Builders, Editorial and Wheels. Before we can talk about directional arrows you must first understand a bit about tread patterns. There are many different tread patterns but there is one main reason to have any tread and that is to disperse water. (dust, dirt) A tread pattern can be designed to disperse more water by making it rotate in only one direction. Thus, the need for directional arrows. The arrow tells you which way to mount a tire for maximum water dispersal. Another, less apparent reason for directional arrows is the tread splice. What is a tread splice? When a tire is manufactured the tread portion of the tire starts out as a long flat strip. This strip is wrapped around the tire and the two ends are cut on an angle so one end overlaps the other rather than having square cut ends. This overlapping point or splice offers a bigger surface area to bond together, rather than the small surface area provided by square cut ends. (Imagine gluing your fingertips together, as opposed to gluing along the entire length of your fingers laid on top of each other. Like an angled splice, the overlapping fingers result in a much stronger bond). To further ensure the strength of this bond along the tread splice the directional arrow will show you which way to mount the tire so that when the rider is “on the gas”; the acceleration force on the rear tire is pressing the splice together, rather than peeling it back. As for braking, 80 % of the braking should take place in the front on most bikes. Therefore, the front tread splice is run in the opposite direction than that of the rear, so when the rider is on the brakes, he’s not peeling the tread splice back. If you are using a tire that has a directional arrow for rear rotation only and for some reason you want to put it on the front, make sure it is rotating in the opposite direction so you don’t aggravate the tread splice. Chris... You've got it going on my friend. I run the same front tire. I love it. Now at slow speed, you will notice it. I mean at parking lot speed. But once heading down the road, it's awesome. I like it because running those two tires increase your Max load capacity substantially. I used to take my wheel and car tire to Any Harley shop, they installed it no problem. Honda dealership are snobby. I bought my own tire changer. It's a manual changer, but a very good one.

I have had a car tire on both the back and the front of my bike for 2 years. When I put the back tire on it was very similar to the mc tire but when I replaced the front tire I thought I made a mistake. I had to increase the pressure and learn how to handle the bike. It was different. Not bad just different. After I learned how to handle it I loved, it it corners like a dream

Chris, I retired from Bridgestone and I understand wanting more mileage on a motorcycle tire but turning a tire backwards on anything is just not smart. The rain grooves were researched to channel water a certain way why would you mess with that and mixing bias and radials is also asking for trouble. Are you aware that the grip on the bias and radials is drastically different, the reason the industry went to radial for more strength and traction. Good luck you may need it.

There is an old saying about two types of people the type that will stick their toe in the water and the type that will just jump in head first. I think you are probably the later. As I have said before I love my car tire on the rear so I am looking forward to watching your future videos on being double dark. My tires have a little over 2500 miles on them and the car tire still looks brand new. I am going to wings over the Smokies at the end of September and am planning on riding the dragon for the 1st time and I think the car tire will be fine.

I don't understand why you would want to run the Battlax backwards. The tire is designed to channel water out but by running backwards, the water will channel to the center; the last place we want the water to go. The rear tire is designed to handle greater stress from both directions with acceleration and braking. I see no reason the tire can't handle running in the way it was meant to travel.

@@sportglidejim9001 you are assuming that just because wondering is designed to do one thing, that must mean that it can't do something else. While a car tire IS designed for a car and a motorcycle tire IS designed for a motorcycle, for all you know, the car tire could also exceed the needs of a motorcycle. As an example, I have a scissor type motorcycle jack. The jack came with a manual hand crank that I have to turn by hand. I also have a drill. The drill was designed to drill holes. The manufacturer of the drill spent a lot of money in R&D to make sure that drill will drill holes. I use the drill on the jack instead of the hand crank even though the hand crank was designed by the manufacturer to raise and lower the jack. And the drill is MUCH better at it than the manual hand crank, even though that was not the intended purpose of the drill. Do you get what I'm saying? Motorcycle tires are designed to be curved for leaving into corners. Sure. But are you sure that curve is even required? Says who? As it turns out, rubber tires are flexible and a car tire will absolutely flex and keep the tread on the ground even in a deep lean. You are just assuming that motorcycle need curved tires because that's what you've been told. The next time you see a motorcycle with a car tire on it, take a look at the sidewall. I'll bet you there is no road wear on the sidewall.
@sportglidejim9001
@sportglidejim9001 5 жыл бұрын
@@KurNorock I'm not assuming anything, it has to do with many things including, strength of the sidewall sidwalls at speed, curvature and compound of the wheels, rain groove design just to name a few. Car tires ie The Dark side bunch came about a few years ago and simply put did not work for the application. Multiple bike mags all did mutiple studie on the subject backed by scientific facts. Same people say plug a motorcycle tire its just a tire smdh

I hope this does not cause you to wreck and get hurt. I am waiting for you to come over to the Indian Line up! I have not DS'ed yet but I find these very innovative and have been wondering about my own bike. I've seen videos where Riders are putting them on Adventure Tourers, Super Sports, and Standards. I would think this would be more of a Heavy Cruiser thing - the 800lb+ Torque Monsters that eat tires. Goldwings, Rocket 3's, Large Harleys, Big Japanese Cruisers, etc. I own a Yamaha Warrior 1700 and it was once a Dragster Bike. Drag Race Tires look like Car Tires to me. Big, thick, and flat bottomed.

I hate to disagree but they were double dark siding back during WW2 everything was rationed and bikers were putting CT's front and back because they could not get MT's. I have been Dark Siding since 2008. I have also run the rear tire on the front (the battle axe). I did get a little more mileage out of the tire but It scalloped real bad and rode rough as hell, so I went back to a good front tire.

The term "biggest" doesn't have anything to do with Darkside. Any car tire on the rear and/or any rear tire on the front. A dealer may not mount the front tire backwards for you. I have mounted them both forward and backwards and I can't tell any difference. Some tires may be noisy if run backwards?

One more comment then I will leave you alone. That car tire on the rear and the bt45 on the front will have a much less chance of flat or blowout. Blowout are mostly caused by excessive heat due to too low pressure in the tire. As far as losing air pressure, after checking my psi, I rode to Portland and back to Phoenix without any drop if pressure. If someone is losing air, try replacing the valve stem core.

Hello Chris, Love your motovlogs, keep them coming. Now that you have experienced dark siding and double dark siding something else to consider. How about taking it one step further and giving your viewers feedback on your use of Shell Rotella T6 or one within the “T” series of oils with your next oil change. I know Amsoil is your motor oil of choice but, to dispel some of the myths about using this product by conducting an in-depth analysis on Shell Rotella would be great. I have heard and read blogs in which Goldwingers swear by Rotella motor oil. Even though Shell does not market Rotella T series products for motorcycle use, it is stated on the container that it meets Japanese Automotive Standards Organization for motorcycle usage (JASO)standards. Rotella oil meets (JASO) MA1 or MA2 which meets the minimum requirements for motorcycle oil with a wet clutch. Rotella T series is also know as a “universal oil” which is primarily marketed for diesel use. This oil has high pressure zinc and phosphorus additives which are beneficial to the transmission gears which share the crankcase oil. I’m not sure why Shell doesn’t advertise Rotella oil as motorcycle oil. In reading a couple blogs I ran across a statement that mentioned that “Shell does not want to compete with its own Advance range of motorcycle oils even though it puts JASO on the side of the Rotella container.” Just something to think about. Looking forward to seeing your motor oil findings. Take Care Your friend Keith from San Diego CA.

I have no problem with the car tire on the back. It's a big have touring bike after all. Should be cheaper to purchase and last longer. Win win for the rear tire. But why would you put the front directional tire on backwards. Can't figure that out. Poor advice and misleading if you ask me. The rotation, tread pattern, and road cohesion are important. Don't mount directional tires backwards. The manufacture spend time and money researching there products. To get the most saftey and wear from the front tire. Proper directional mounting and tire pressure are of key importance.

Chris, I have worked at a motorcycle dealership in the past that was sued over putting a front tire on the front of a motorcycle. It didn’t end well for the shop. I have some concerns myself. The rear tires have a belt that is wrapped/overlapped to allow for the drive force from the engine. And not so much for braking as the rear doesn’t contribute much to that. I also am concerned about the angled groves on the sides. On a tire the inner/center most part of the grove contacts the pavement first. As the tire rolls forward the angle of the grove forces the water to the side away from the tire. This squeezes the water out from under the tire. If mounted backwards it can actually “pump” water under the tire and make for a dangerous ride. Please be mindful of these factors when mounting tires. Ride Safe Scooter

Having bought the very same tire for my rear Darkside, I noticed written on the sidewalk 40 psi nothing higher. Not sure why one would go above 40 psi?

He doesn’t. He replied to TennWingman’s post and said he flipped the rotation to face forward.

Say Chris, I like your new intro better than your old one. We never know what to expect watching your vlogs. But I’m still trying to understand why you mount the rear tire backward when installed up front. I’ve heard this before but no one really explained why and how this effect riding in the rain. How is the water channeling out differently now? I’m in a student trying to learn mode, not trying to put down the darksiding ways. I ride with guy who darkside the rear so I see the results, but you got me interested in the double darksiding. And why I need to reverse the tire on the front. Can you or anyone step up and teach? This might make a good darkside vlog, I see I’m not the only one interested

I have a rear ME880 MC tire up front on a Vulcan Nomad with a 205/60/16 CT on the rear I have arrows correctly facing forward on both tires as I feel the tread was designed to travel that way for Best Results. I have had a perfect experience with No wobble shake or shimmy . In my research of the net with dark siding and double dark siding I did see somewhere it said to reverse the tire rotation on the front but this made no sense to me to channel water from the outside inward to the center of the tire where it cold trap and cause hydroplaning .... So I ignored that advice.

What is the purpose of running the front tire backwards?

Heck...I went flip-sided and put motorcycle tires on my vw bug.......just cause I wanted to see ....works ok ...not for the long run....just trying sumpthin....lookin for a tire to put on the back of my rocket3....watching others and lookin for the right tire....240s are rediculous considering......shinkos did well on my busa but soft rubber didn't last...pirellis cost and don't last long either...like a good deal price and quality....seems this day manufactures and sales mark up so much so they can profit, market their name and support their racing/marketing enterprises ....which well is capitalism......only I don't care to pay so somebody can gouge me on price....a 240 car tire can cost less than a 100 be more durable and perform acceptably but a 240 rear bike tire costs 200-400...!! And doesn't last down the center worth a dang....!!!just a failure from what I can see by the tire manufacturers...but beating a dead horse don't get it movin...

Great Video Chris! I may have missed it, but did you mount the BS tire on the front with the direction reversed? I want to go double dark sided, but as you said, someone to mount the CT on the rear is going to be a challenge I think. Will dealers have a problem mounting a rear MC tire on the front? How about reverse direction? Thanks

Little difference between the two widths, ...certainly not the 'largest' MC tire...the normal rear widths are 180's for the GW

Chris, as far as the front, could you have used the same type Tire they use on Goldwing Trike Conversions? I think they are wider than the Standard Wing front Tire. Who knows... Maybe there using what your using. Thanks for sharing My Friend.

I have a question, when installing a car tire on the rear of your bike do you need to install a inter tube?
@68BigSherm
@68BigSherm 5 жыл бұрын
No, Will. If the motorcycle rim takes tubeless motorcycle tires, then no tube is necessary when using a car tire. Now, if the rim calls for tubes (usually the case in a wheel with spokes) then you’ll of course, need a tube.
