My brother and I got so good at Double Dragon in the arcade that we could beat the game on 1 quarter each. The end brother battle was only fitting, and we made a rule not to grab the machine gun.

At the end of stage two the conveyor belt animation, the elevator doors opening then closing and the large number of enemies on the screen causes the frame rate to plummet on the arcade hardware, a two player game puts even further strain on the hardware sending the frame rate into the single figures. Those frame rate drops were carried across to the emulated version of the game on MAME. Double Dragon Trilogy on Steam includes a fairly accurate emulation of Double Dragon that doesn't suffer from any of the frame rate drops that plagued the arcade version.
@sani86468 жыл бұрын
I learned a cool trick on the mame version a couple years back by raising all three cpu's to 180-200% in the options menu (slider controls) to get rid of the slowdown. I didn't even know about the trilogy on steam, i'll have to check it out.

The elbow smash and reverse jump kick are so strong because enemies hesitate for a short while to attack when your back is turned to them (and it's an instant knockdown), so you have to deliberately turn your backs to them and wait for them to stand behind you before you use it. Don't walk up to them, turn around and use it, because they will already have initiated an attack of their own.

I remember being amazed by this game in arcades. Rarely having money to play it but when I did it was a brief experience, and left me wanting to play it more. Still one of my favorite beat em ups even though it doesnt have the amount of moves and depth of some newer ones. On mame I was able to beat it on 2 coins. You can use only the elbow for the entire game and it makes the game very easy. Just luring guys into the elbow. The only tricky parts being the traps on the final stage. Not very exciting to watch however. Keep up the great videos

You're right, no one really complained about the slowdown in the arcade, it was such a breakthrough game that it wasn't an issue lol , at least in mame you can eliminate the slowdown with the slider controls by raising all three cpu's to 200%. The slowdown was indeed part of the original game. Fun-Fact: The bootleg Double Dragon had a better CPU than the original board so it didn't lag nearly as much. Because of this people have conflicting memories as to whether the original arcade game had slowdown or not. Gamesack is playing with a genuine board here.

For those of you who play this on MAME, or are about too, you can get rid of the slowdown while in the game. In the game go through the menus and look for anything that says "CPU," usually in the "sliders" group. Bump up the CPU "mainCPU" to about 180%. The whole game will play at the normal speed. *I haven't kept up with emulators for a while so I'm not sure if every MAME version supports this feature. I use MAME Plus 64 with a separate GUI.
@sani86468 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, i found out about the cpu tweak a couple years back, it's def the way to go if you are playing this in mame, depending on which mame is being used, it may need to have cheats enabled to access the cpu if it does not show up in the options or slider controls.

So the versus part at the end, that's how fast the game would really run, but it has slow down basically at all times -- any time there are more than 2 characters on the screen. There are a lot of people who hate the Genesis/MD version of Double Dragon because it is too fast, but really it is just running full speed the whole time.
@SignOfTheTimes0088 жыл бұрын

You can get the arcade version on the ps4 store too. It even emulates the ridiculous slowdown perfectly lol. Gotta say I always preferred the arcade sound to any console / computer versions. The Master System and NES versions sound gives me an instant headache!
@napalmhardcore7 жыл бұрын
Didn't realise the arcade version suffered from slowdown and thought either my old (retired) computer was struggling for some reason or that the MAME version was broken. Never had a big video game arcade where I live, just two or three places that had a few machines, so I never saw a DD machine in person.

You must admit if Double-Dragon for Genesis/Mega-Drive is excellent port & very faithful to the arcade. The slowdown in the Genesis/Mega-Drive version because that game want to emulate the arcade version. I play both Double-Dragon arcade & Mega-Drive in my childhood, Genesis/Mega-Drive is the best conversion from the arcade, I feel the same feeling playing Double-Dragon in Mega-Drive & arcade.

The bast versions of Double Dragon are the GBA version and the Xbox Live HD arcade version (which is no longer available ). They feel and look like the arcade version.
