I meant to add this to my comment but I did have some problems. The swelling DID go down completely but parts of my chin are numb because my nerves did get messed up (but I knew that was a risk and they had to move the nerve or else). But other than that, no problems.

I had the opposite problem: a severely overgrown upper jaw and an extremely small lower jaw. In addition I had no chin. I had a terrible bite. I had the surgery and had an inch and a half added to my lower jaw as well of having my upper jaw reduced. It was life-changing and it's the best decision I ever made. I can chew food and talk more clearly. As a bonus, the doctors did a chin advancement so now I have one of those too. It was worth the swelling and the recovery time.

I was proposed a similar surgery, cutting my upper and lower jaw to reposition them, to fix my overbite and extreme open bite. In the end I managed to achieve a functional result with invisilign, but I have to wear the retainer at night for the rest of my life. Really interesting to see what recovery may have looked like if I’d gone the other route!

I had this surgery when I was 16 to correct an over bite/ open bite. Basically my jaw was so far away from my maxilla (top teeth) that i basically wasn’t using my front teeth to chew. The doc told me at my appointment that my mouth actually can’t close, that i had been using my face muscles to keep it closed the whole time. that blew my mind. I didn’t realize until after I had it how sucky eating was! Though it was a LONG RECOVERY and lol I swole up like 2x what the girl in the vid did. It was totally worth it.

I wore a solid plastic brace that fit badly and cut my gums for two years to try and correct my regressive lower jaw but it wasn't working at all so I gave up. My teeth and face have always been a mess and I have a slight speech impediment because of it which didn't help with my original ambition to be an actress. Now I'm nearly 50 and my marionettes are pronounced because of my regressive chin and when I asked my dentist if anything could be done to help about a decade ago he just said 'to be honest that ship has sailed' which cut like a knife. I wish I'd had the opportunity to have the surgery when I was younger as I've felt like a freak my whole life.

@austinzizzi1142
@austinzizzi1142 7 ай бұрын
No the asymmetry it caused by asymmetry in the bone not the muscle. Patients with asymmetrical jaws are more likely to have more asymmetry throughout the rest of the face. You have to remember all the bones of the face are connected
@NaniRPDL
@NaniRPDL 7 ай бұрын
Not necessarily
@Terminal_Boneitis
@Terminal_Boneitis 7 ай бұрын
@@austinzizzi1142Her facial bones will always be asymmetrical (most people's are) but actually muscle does have the ability to change the shape of bone because of the forces it exerts where it attaches to the bone, so her muscles being used more symmetrically can theoretically improve the symmetry of the skeletal structure as well.
@austinzizzi1142
@austinzizzi1142 7 ай бұрын
@@Terminal_Boneitis sure asymmetry is a spectrum but people with cranio facial base deformities like skeletal malocclusion are much more prone to having higher levels of asymmetry throughout the rest of the face as well, and muscle use influences bone shape (and vise versa) during development, but there is absolutely no evidence suggesting that you can change your bone structure after development by changing muscle usage like her.
@austinzizzi1142
@austinzizzi1142 7 ай бұрын
@awardwinningcritique6895 you’re talking about posture that’s something completely separate. First of all the sutures in your face are already closed by the time you stop developing. Secondly to change asymmetry in the face you are talking about change the actual physical SHAPE of the bone. That’s completely separate than muscles stabilizing your skeleton, but a better bite would give her entire skeleton a much more harmonious posture because the jaw is the counter weight for the spine which balances out the forces from gravity

This surgery was suggested to me in my twenties along with braces due to a misaligned bite. For the majority of my life, I've had a displaced condyle and my jaw always feels out of place. It causes a lot of facial pain. I never got the surgery and have dealt with it the entire time up until the age of 50, my age now. I wish I could go back and do it differently. Sometimes I still think about getting it to potentially live the rest of my life with a lack of pain and discomfort but I don't know... I probably won't.

just got this done, in 4 days I’m 1 month post op!! weirdly enough my swelling went down a drastic amount by week 2. the surgeon was pleasantly surprised about how much it went down and he said I’m one of the best patients he’s had in regards to swelling. even though I’m at the beginning of my recovery I’m so so glad I got it done 😇 edit: her nose is probably crooked because it’s still inflamed/swollen. from everything I’ve read and heard the nose doesn’t usually “straighten out” fully until around 6 months and what we see of her is at 2 months. keep in mind at 1 year is how the face actually ends up looking!

I had a bilateral osteotomy (like hers), my lower jaw moved back, my upper jaw forward (albeit just a few millimeters). Just prior to surgery is the worst, as they straighten your teeth as the prelude to aligning them. I could lick my lips with my teeth clenched! The most difficult part was having my wisdom teeth removed about six months prior. I had a lot of swelling. The upper jaw relocation made my palate very soft, and I was wired shut for about six weeks. It taught me about patience--you can't lick your lips, it's difficult to sneeze (who would've thought?) and you cannot yawn. I had two plastic splints between my teeth, so my liquid diet (especially soup) would catch little bits, and it was hard to be heard, since your mouth is basically closed. Crying in frustration was also out, since if your nose got congested, it was hard to breathe. But the difference it made to me was amazing, tremendous--I have never regretted it. And on another (bright?) note, I was a kid, and my parent's dental insurance said it was medical, and the medical said it was dental, so the next year, my parents got a huge tax break and were able to help with college for several of my siblings. Silver linings indeed haha. She looks great! I'll bet she is very happy, I'm sure she is glad to have it over with.

@@KZbinAccount-me3bv depends on how your jaw and starting point is. I got double jaw surgery because my lower jaw was far back compared to my upper one and I have a drastic change in my lower face appearance. my jawline is sharp, my lip placement is totally different and now I have an oval face compared to a round one. it was 100% worth it to me and the difference is huge. she started with a forward lower jaw so sliding it backwards didn’t have a huge effect in changing the overall “look” of her face

I'm interested in the facial shaping options, i.e., sliding genioplasty, jaw bone/chin shaving vs this procedure. It seems as though shaving on one side, would've been helpful rather than just alignment. Is this because functional repair differs from cosmetic/plastic surgery goals?

I had the lower jaw and chin done at the same time. It took a year for all of the swelling to subside and I’d say 6 years for the bone lumps to smoothen out and look natural in their new positions. It was rough. I couldn’t eat solid food for 12 weeks. My jaw now crunches when I open it and my chin and lower lip don’t have full feeling, just a cold sensation when pressed (no loss of movement though). It’s not all rainbows and sunshine but for most of us this is worth it.

I'm not sure why she had this surgery, if she couldn't eat well, or whatever her condition might have been causing, but the look didn't improve enough for the pain to me, UNLESS she had issues eating, or had pain, and it was done to correct those things. Looks wise, it wasn't worth it for me.

The only thing that is keeping me away off getting this surgery
@rainbowawakening
@rainbowawakening 7 ай бұрын
it’s probably both! swelling doesn’t go away until around 6 months but for some it’s up to a year. that and the surgery can widen your nose as well since the upper jaw is cut and split apart therefore widening the nostrils and tip of the nose

@rajaeelyousfi8867 7 ай бұрын
@@rainbowawakening does it also widen your nose if you get upperjaw surgery just for symmetry?
@rainbowawakening
@rainbowawakening 7 ай бұрын
@@rajaeelyousfi8867 yes it can, i got upper jaw surgery to make it fit symmetrical on my lower jaw and it did widen mine. nothing is 100% guaranteed to happen though bc some patients don’t notice a difference in their nose

나도 치아 부정교합으로 이 수술을 받았다. 12년이 지난 지금은 살가죽이 다 내려와서 안면거상술을 받아야만 했어.

But she still fits into our standards of beauty. I wonder if some of the remaining asymmetry is muscular-like, some facial muscles worked harder and were larger because the jaw was so misaligned.

I’m so glad I was born with a perfect jawline. Even envied by men and women..😂 as I was told. But it’s sad cuz I still feel insecure about my teeth. So I guess we all suffer from insecurities and thoughts…
