Fishing with Rod

Күн бұрын

We explored Vancouver Island's smallmouth bass fisheries in early spring. Our first stop of the season was Shawnigan Lake, targeting pre-spawn bass in 10 to 15 feet of water by fishing with a tubebait on a Carolina rig.

Kitty, I am impressed that you flip the bail over manually instead of cranking the reel handle. That will save your reel in the long run. Plus, you have the same first name as my wife, so that's a bonus for me. In the spring, casting into the deep water and retrieving toward the shallows is a solid technique.

Bass and trout indeed have different traits. Here in US there are more bass fishing opportunities so more knowledge about bass behavior: they are turned on when air pressure is low, when it is cloudy, and especially before a front, just like the first day you were fishing; they are turned off by high air pressure, when it is very sunny, and especially directly after a front, just like the second beautiful day. Weather and air pressure does turn out to be a very big predictor of bass fishing performance in many people's experiences, including yours and mine.

That’s not what Shawnigan lake bass fishing is like anymore. It’s overrun with small bass now and fish are becoming stunted. Catching big ones like they’re catching is a lot harder now.

great video. my son caught his biggest smallie from that lake. As well incase you are curious as to why the bite was off the second day, it was due to extreme temperature change. Bass tend to become inactive if there is a drastic change in temperature until they acclimate... this is more apparent with the bigger ones. not so much for the smaller ones.

It's definitely not ideal, at the time that's all we had for waterproof gear. We also kept our PFDs on at all time for safety of course. Ideally, proper waterproof bibs, and rain boots would be better. That's what I will be wearing this year actually, so stay tuned for that.

I once heard of a place further south where apparently the fire trucks fill up that could also be used for skiffs/canoes, etc., but have not seen it. I think I need to get out more! :-) Thanks again.

Richard deCosta Key word, Illinois. That's one state, not the whole Midwest of the USA. Also, from what you've just said, is contradictory towards your original comment; about trout/salmon fishing is a bigger craze in the Midwest than bass. Just keep fishing. Each species have their own little niche. Like I said, I do both, and then some. Just try to enjoy it. Tight lines.

It's funny. I feel like the western USA and Canada are obsessed with bass fishing, even if it's not the predominant fishery. Whereas here in the midwestern USA people are crazy about trout and salmon fisihing, even if opportunities are few and far between. Bass are just so... plain.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 7 жыл бұрын
Actually here in British Columbia, salmon, trout and steelhead are the predominant target species as they are native to this region, whereas bass are invasive. With that said, all styles of fishing for all species are interesting, that's why we choose to diversify our video content.
@ImThinking3
