Need more wall space to store and organize your tools? Nick shows how to build and install a unique storage cabinet that features pegboard panels inside and out. This enables you to hang twice as many tools in the same vertical space. The design is easily adjustable to fit your shop, and it will accommodate many types and sizes of tools. It attaches directly to a wall frame at both the top and bottom, and an ingenious "lip" on both the doors keeps them from sagging under the weight of the tools.
The plans for this brilliant sled, its guards, stop and tenoning jig that Nick explains are available from the Workshop Companion General Store at workshopcompan...

I'll tell you something funny. On a generic woodworking short from some other channel, one guy commented something like "all woodworking shorts are BS". People seemed to agree in general, until someone wrote "except for that one guy who looks like a mad scientist, his shorts are amazing". Everyone immediately knew he was talking about you :) and agreed of course. Very useful build btw. Will try it one day.

Great story. I'll tell you something funny in return. The "mad scientist" look is quite by accident. We started this channel during Covid, when I hadn't been to a barber in months. My hair is extraordinarily curly, so naturally it looked like a bird's nest. But it wasn't long before we realized the bird's nest was working for us as part of the brand. So we kept it. Nowadays when my barber asks "What'll it be?", I tell him I want to look "unkempt but competent."

I would never have the space or money to have a woodworking setup for myself, but I still have notifications on for your videos. not only is it just interesting to watch a master craftsman teach (esp when he's such a good teacher), but I feel like I could start picking out quality woodworking techniques myself now-- and when I have enough money to buy anything that isn't from IKEA, im sure that'll come in handy. thanks for all your wonderful videos

@@WorkshopCompanion I have a sneaking suspicion that I’m the only one that caught on. Funny that you mentioned a viola … the average person has never heard of such a beast, even though everyone has heard one at least once in their life. You must be a musician, yes? You actually look and act just like my uni orchestra conductor 😎

@@PartyOf8Please My first venture into professional woodworking was as a luthier making traditional American stringed musical instruments -- dulcimores, banjos, dobros, fiddles. Currently, I have a young man working for me who is considered one of the best viola students in America. He's saving his earnings to study with world-class violists in Europe later this year. And don't worry; I won't let him go anywhere near the power tools.
@PartyOf8Please

@@WorkshopCompanion My parents bought a dulcimer one time when they were in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. They ordered it custom-made because they wanted maple leaves for sound holes. Neither of them played it, they wished they knew how but never did learn. After Mom passed away I gave it to our former pastor - he and his wife both perform bluegrass music. That was one instrument they didn’t have - my siblings and I thought it was time they had one! Is your helper’s name Travis, by chance? Tell him to keep his callouses hard! That’s impressive that he wants to study in Europe. I hope his dreams come true! I’m a percussionist, by trade. I’ve been playing for more than 50 years. I just play for my own enjoyment now, I’m too old to carry all the big cases, unpack everything, set it all up, do the performance, tear everything down, pack it all up, and carry it all down the road. The last time I did all of that, I had 14 cases - that’s a lot of work! I enjoyed it, though. I also taught private lessons through our school system for 35 years. I enjoyed that, too - but the way kids are these days, I’m glad I did it when I did it. ‘Nuff said about that! Now I like to play with sawdust 😎

I found this channel in shorts and I’m glad I did. This channel is just so nice to watch. He’s got a grandfatherly feel to the way he teaches. Despite how far outside my current skill set his project is he makes me feel like I could do it. And of course whenever Bella the dog jumps into frame my heart smiles.

The one key thing about this storage unit is for those of us who do do not have a permanent shop space, rental homes, this can be scalable and modular so if & when you have to move, it can be easily taken down to move. The one big thing I got out of this was the bungee holders, it was a "DUH!" moment. Just an FYI, "The Family Handyman Magazine" used to have this cabinet in the magazine it seemed yearly. Now that the magazine has gone to crap & shrunk, I haven't seen it in there but plans can be easily found. Great descriptive video.

I did something kind of like that. I recently put a new kitchen in my 1960's house. But, as a true Yankee, I could not throw away the old cabinets. So, I installed them in my shop. I had to remove some pegboard to put them up. I put the pegboard on the inside of all the doors. I did install a 1/2-inch rail all around the inside of the door to allow the pegs to be mounted. That was on 8 doors. The cabinets of course, have shelves, and so a lot more tools could be stored. Let your Yankee out and don't throw good stuff out. (I don't live in New England any more).

@WorkshopCompanion
@WorkshopCompanion Ай бұрын
A Thales square is fine for checking right angles, but it's used more in carpentry than woodworking. I suspect the reason is that it folds flat and takes up less space in your tool box. Hard to fit a framing square in a narrow box. But you should be aware that's it's application is fairly limited. A framing square is much more versatile.

Question to everyone: What is your idea to hide any cable from an USB-Dock or USB-power adapter, a Clock or light with 230V cable hanging on the pegboard itself (or a device with Ethernet or optical fibre connection hanging on the pegboard) behind a pegboard? Because the plugs of cables are to big for the small holes in the pegboard. For example: Would you cut out a piece of the pegboard, push the cable with the larger plugs through the cut out hole and insert the pegboard piece back in?
