Two Martin Laundaus for the price of one in the show's first whodunit. I own nothing. #Columbo #DoubleShock #PeterFalk #MartinLandau #JulieNewmar #JeanetteNolan #EpisodeGuide #Review

The medical drama that the housekeeper enjoys watching really cracks me up. Rocky, the former football player, now doctor. Filmed in all close-up shots from a low angle.

One of the better episodes. Love the scenes with Jeannette Nolan. She was a fine character actress back in the day.

Columbo was a genius to recognize foul play. If I were engaged to Julie Newmar, I'D die of a heart attack.

Great review of an all time great episode...the Columbo dream team really delivered on this one! Mrs Peck and Columbo scenes are classic. I watched this one so many times I think I have it memorized. 😄

As always, well done. Much to admire here. Two Landau's for the crime of one. The LT being hammy on the cooking show. Peck gonna Peck and Columbo being wounded by it. And, yes Julie!

The housekeeper played a great part in a earlier episode of Gunsmoke. An evil criminal had killed her beloved mule. She was such a sympathetic character. She played an ornery old lady then and, although not as endearing, an ornery old lady in this Columbo episode.

Martin Landau did well in this dual role. I don't remember if he was nominated for an Emmy or not for this.

He was not. He had six Emmy nominations, but none were for Columbo.

A funny coincidence: Martin Landau played Roland Hand - the IMF’s master of disguise - on Mission: Impossible. When his left he was replaced by Leonard Nimoy. The name of Leonard Nimoy’s character? Paris! And both matched wits with Columbo!

@@schlockhorror5533 I am sure you were saving that tidbit until you get to the Season 10 episode. Love your vids. Colombo makes me think all tv shows should be limited to 10 episodes per year. Perhaps it will increase the quality of the writing.

It was clever how they could turn the Columbo format, in which we see the murder and the person who committed it, into a whodunnit with the twins gimmick. (And since this is a Columbo format, we all should’ve seen the answer coming a mile away.)
@GillAgainsIsland12 Жыл бұрын
This one really had me going when I first watched it. I was certain it was the flamboyant brother who committed the murder. It never occurred to me that they were BOTH in on it.

"Norman you wouldn't know a Picasso from a Raushack test." Jeanette Nolan's Irish temper is obviously shown in this . I always though Dexter was the one who threw the blender in the bathtub immediately electrocuting his uncle. An absolute brilliant episode to wrap up the second season.
@rxtsec12 жыл бұрын
Glad I'm finally caught up with your reviews. I binged them when I could the last 2 days. I actually thought the twist for this one would be the other brother but it being both actually was better cause then I would have been mad figuring it out. Only thing I didn't like was the old lady. She seemed to care about her tv shows & housekeeping more than the death of the old man & she's out of work but seemed to not be concerned. The comedy between her & Columbo was supposed to be funny & for some it worked but for me it didn't. The cooking scene was good though cause I believe that's how both would be.

I own all of the original season DVDs as well as TV movies and whenever I'm deciding to watch a Columbo there are certain reasons why I might pick a certain episode. Mrs. Peck is always my reason for picking Double Shock, besides the cooking show segment which is a hilarious classic that makes you laugh. You get the feeling that the whole thing is a blooper that they decided to leave in. One thing that I don't believe you mentioned was that actor Dabney Coleman played the sergeant in this episode.

Has anyone ever tried what columbo made with the TV Brother in that scene? It was a weird mix of eggs and pepper, and its all put into a blender which they later drink? Are health drinks always this extreme?

The scene where Dexter Paris invites Columbo onto his show is my least-favorite part of the episode. To me, that was cringeworthy padding with Landau's constant phony laughing. Mrs. Peck's throwing Columbo out of his crime scene and his having to tiptoe around her kind of annoyed me too. I prefer the Columbo from "The Most Crucial Play," "A Stitch in Crime," and "Identity Crisis," where some of the bumbling is clearly a mask, as opposed to this Columbo, who seems genuinely inept at times except when it comes to catching the killer. The best parts of the episode were the reveal, Columbo comforting Mrs. Peck at the end, and the fact that there was a secondary murder, something you don't see much past season 2. And no mention of the episode having been directed by Robert Butler, who went on to direct the pilot of Hill Street Blues six or seven years later?
