You get a mini arc of sorts with Columbo as well. After being starstruck, he gives her leeway for her to confess once he figures out she was involved- that it was a "terrible mistake". He gets more disappointed when he infers later if she's sure she wants to carry on with her attempts at misdirecting him. So by the end when everythings laid bare, he just looks so sad.

I'll tell you what true greatness is. Her acting when columbo shows up and she realizes that it's all over. It's like she's been playing a role for decades, the innocent wife of someone who died at sea. And it was all over.

This is one of my favorite episodes (for pretty much every reason you mentioned). I like that Nora is so kind to Columbo 😊 You are doing such a FANTASTIC job on your series! I'm always impressed by your videos and how well you can sum up the episodes. Your editing is very good. 💕The people love you! lol

Thank you so much my friend - Columbo episodes tend to have quite involved, complicated plots and it's hard to simultaneously give a brief summary and not skip any important details. Glad to know I'm not doing too bad a job! Your comments and support mean a lot to me. Have a great day!

I find myself wondering, just how many people, columbo has unintentionally put out of work, because he arrested the CEO of their company and caused the company to go under or star of their tv show causing its cancellation. That said, I love columbo and have since I was a kid. Great and insightful reviews .

I do think Nora genuinely likes Columbo-but I also think she’s trying to manipulate him by charming him. I love Anne Baxter and this episode. My only complaint is with the title and the concept behind it-Baxter was only 49 years old when the episode aired, but for a Hollywood leading lady, that meant she was a “falling star.” Two and a half years later, then-48-year-old Janet Leigh played the “Forgotten Lady,” with the suggestion that her character was much older (her old movie co-star was played by 63-year-old John Payne). Things have changed for the better since the 1970s, but not as much as they should.

For those who saw them together it was remarked of Audrey in Mel’s presence that, Hepburn was the kind of woman who when she finally loved a man, did so totally, utterly, completely, practically worshipfully... you lucky swine! Catch him in _Scaramouche (1952)_ the very finest of Stewart Granger’s swashbucklers, if you can, where Ferrer’s villain is more loathsomely charming and deadly than even James Mason’s turn as Black Prince Rupert in _Zenda._

Kevin McCarthy here plays the studio head who doesn't really stand out much as far as the plot goes, but the role is almost a prototype for the role of R.J. Fletcher, his role in the movie "UHF". The ending was also referenced in the final episode of Monk.

I love these videos. I started watching Columbo a few months ago, and he is absolutely my new Hero. My favorite episodes are the Leonard Nimoy one, the Janet Leigh one, and the one with the two Dobermans. I'm really looking forward to those videos, even if they're maybe not so good and you have to set me straight.

When I watched this as a kid I wondered why she killed her assistant, rather than Jerry who was blackmailing her. At first I assumed she wanted to kill her assistant and get Jerry blamed for the murder but he had an alibi at the bookstore. Her assistant kept the secret for a long time and seemed loyal.

@@m.e.d.7997 No, the twist was that Nora had taken the air out of the tyre's of Jean's car, which forced her to take Jerry's car. Nora always planned on killing Jean from the start, while making it look like Jerry was the intended target.

@@brookehanley3659 Nora knew that Jean killed her husband and she was worried that Nora would eventually blab to Jerry. She didn't really try to kill Jerry again- she just made it look like "someone" was trying to kill Jerry to divert attention away from Nora's death, and therefore away from the true motive.

Mostly great acting all around and scenes with Anne Baxter and Mel Ferrer together are seamless. Baxter's outfits are interesting especially the pants suit with outside slits from the knee down to the cuff. I thought the initial kill was supposed to be a twofer, both Ferrer and Pippa Scott; the flat tire forcing them into the one car. The magic behind the scenes of Hollywood production is fun too.

This is my favorite Columbo episode because it was the one that made me realize the audience didn't always know the motive for the murder at the outset. My enthusiasm for it was only slightly dampened by the realization that elements of the plot were lifted from a season 8 Perry Mason episode Jackson Gillis had written with Julie Sommars and Linden Chiles.

During this episode especially when I found out Jerry really wasn't a threat to her like we were misled & therefore trying to kill him wouldn't make sense I was thinking they better have a good reason & they did. Definitely one of the best scripts of the show.

Great work again. Thanks. I think the problem I have with this one is that she comes across as sympathetic at times. It's just not as much fun watching Columbo take her (or Ruth Gordon, Janet Leigh, et al.) down as it is him busting Messrs Cassidy, Conrad, Culp, and McGoohan! The Rich Schmuck Spectrum methinks!

Among the lady villains, I really like Vera Miles. She's mean and tough as nails like the men you mentioned. She really nails it. And some of the sympathetic villains are the best: Pleasance, Mcgoohan (as the Colonel), and Cash.
@merfigNOW
@merfigNOW 3 жыл бұрын
@@nicholasschroeder3678 I agree re: VM. And, yes those three are sympathetic in so much as they commit a horrific crime, but you see them struggle with what they have done. That Columbo is so gentle with them when he wraps up is understandable. The scene where the Colonel smokes a stogie with Columbo and tries to (SPOILERS) connect with him, only to have the LT kind of rebuff him (our jobs are similar and one day we may hang it up)...is one of my favorites of the entire run! Still, I don't get the same thrill as when he nails of the real a*holes! ;-)
@nicholasschroeder3678

@@merfigNOW Some of the best nails are Gene Barry, Lee Grant, Leonard Nimoy, Richard Kiley, Ross Martin, and the ones you already mentioned. Just cruel people. The Colonel and Carsini explicitly say they have NO remorse, but they're fascinating and sympathetic--in part ar least--because they killed out of some misguided passion that was under threat. They're fanatics, but not shabby. They have some greatness about them, and their downfall has a feeling of a Greak tragedy with the flaw. The Montoya one is the same. Deep down they ARE rotten narcissists, but in their heads they killed out of a love of art, duty, or honor. And yeah, they can't reconcile the dirty deed with the lofty justification, and it shows. I guess that's the part that makes them sympathetic. Those are my favorites.
