Nice! Good observation man! Not easy to explain though, so I won’t do complimentary translucent layering often. 😊🎨🎨🎨
@TheAndrian46312 күн бұрын
@DonSuratos Yes, I agree. Interestingly what you have done here is step one, the zenithal (grisaille) has been transformed to a zenithal bruinaille with the first contrast paint application to act as the complementary underpainting with reinforced highlights again with white before the blue is applied. In general using complementary colours with contrast/glazed layers avoids the issue of mixing directly two complementary colours, which can create muddy colours due to the pigment ingredients of both colours. I'll stop there with the art talk.

Ive had a lot of fun experimenting with speed paint medium the last few months. For a recent Battletech paint scheme I thinned Magic Blue to 1:8 paint to medium and came out with this nice sky blue.
@DonSuratos16 күн бұрын
Woah that is a lot of thinning! Should be awesome as a final highlight glaze. 😊
@Weaver_Games16 күн бұрын
I found a 1:1 ratio of Tyrian Navy to medium results in almost the exact same blue as the 143rd legion blue guardsman scheme. Using it now and my coats are finally highlighted well lol. I'm so bad at doing folded clothes right. I'm also using the Warpaints Fanatic acrylics - they're fantastic in their opacity but sometimes I wonder if they're TOO opaque. Like I'll thin Night Sky blue down like 1:6 for a glaze type thing and it still covers like crazy.

When you have the fundamentals of art and you have clarity of what you want to communicate and how, I think that's the real key or path for making good art. Slapchop is one more technique to achieve this. Those who insist on saying whether a technique really gives you true art, is because they don't understand the above point. Art is a form of communication. Be it through words, an image, a video. This is just one more variable, but not a definitive one. A miniature, a canvas, a song. Each one is a universe of its own. And curiously, how much do we really know about how each of these was made? How many golden demons do we not know that it was made with a Drybrushing or a Slapshop? Questioning a technique is like questioning a path to a result. If the result is great, why question the technique or tool? Great video as always Don!

Great video (like always) and technique!!! I love it!!! Is something different and faster to get a finished miniature. In my case I have a full-time job, wife and two kids that one of them have special needs. So, my time is very minimal for me to sit and have a full session of painting like I will love to have. The only time that I have is when everyone is sleeping. I see miniature painting like cooking. Some people have time to prepare a full meal, others like me some times only have the time to prepare a Pb and J sandwich. The thing is, there's no one method to paint a miniature. Like cooking, there's is no one way to cook for example chicken. There hundreds of ways to cook it. Some ways take hours, others take half of the time. The important thing is is what you like and the way you like to paint, not what others like. Imagine that DaVinci, Rembrandt, Van Gog and Michelangelo painted the same way because they think that there's only one way to do it. Everything will be boring and without of purpose or self expression. Sometimes we forget the meaning of the word hobby..... "is a past time to enjoy relaxation.... not to create stress". In the end is what works for you not what works for others. Not every time what works for one person will work for you. Like I said, awesome video! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and talent with us!!! I can wait for the next video!!!

I'm loving slapchop, but I think I understand where the negative vibes from these people. They're probably individuals on the learning path trying to get better at traditional layered acrylic painting but realizing that their favourite youtubers who make it look easy are actually terrifyingly talented painters and that getting a perfectly smooth 'eavy metal look is actually exceptionally difficult and time consuming. Then slapchop comes along and gets fantastic visual results with (comparatively) little skill so they become frustrated that an "easy" method can surpass what they're currently capable of so they lash out. I'm not saying this is how one SHOULD be reacting, but I think it's probably the psychology at play here. Yes, slapchop won't win a competition. Yes, traditional painting can reach a higher peak - but most people aren't Sam Lenz. Me doing normal acrylic layers vs. a slapchop means the layer approach will look worse cause I'm not that good at painting.

The mini after the first round of slapchop looks a lot like mine when I'm applying my standard process: I prime in a dark chocolate browm, then airbrush a zenithal gradiant of lighter brown up to ivory. I then apply a light white drybrush for extra crispiness. Only then do I deem my minis ready for the contrast paints. The brown gradient instead of whote on black is because translucent paints don't look good at all over black paint. Using a dark colour instead of black gives more than enough contrast.

That would be brunaille underpainting. In fact what he's done here is use a classic zenithal 'grisaille' to create a 'brunaille' from the 'grisaille' with contrast paint and then apply a white highlight to take advantage of the 2nd round of contrast but this time using a complementary colour. I do a zenithal of complementary colours on the underpaining and then apply glazes on top, similar to this approach using contrast.

Simple slapchop or even chop on chop May leave something to be desired but in the end Is all a matter of how much time you whant to spend in a piece. Even with acrylics you Will get the same Sense of "incomplete" if you give yourself Just and hour to Paint . Speedpaints are not to blame for the simplicity of the piece. Time Is. And I rechon that Just with a bit more highlight on the face and shoulders the piece whould have looked 3 times Better than before with less time investiment. As Always. Bruh that argument is dumb depending on how you look at it. If your a painter and PAINTING is your hobby than sure I can see that argument to an extent. But if you don’t really care about the painting part of it and just painting cuz a Tournament requires painting minis than why say it’s Dumb. At that point painting is just a huge waste of time as all that person wants to do is play and not spend weeks painting an army. Don ignore the negatives, you just keep up that great work and keep those videos coming.

Being rude to somebody because you disagree with their take is the dumbest thing of all. I really don't know how people forgot to disagree without being disrespectful.

It’s the social media age man. I am a blogger since 2009, so I am used to these kinds of people. I enjoy engaging with them to be honest. 😊

Yeap. I took up Fine Arts in college. I think there is NO need for art jargons, if the main objective is to simply make people pick up miniature painting as a hobby. 😊

This community can be so weird man. Who cares how someone paints their minis??? At the end of the day if they enjoy playing the game and don't want to spend a ton of time painting then let them paint that way. Heck even if they do enjoy painting whats wrong with this way of painting??? Not everyone wants to get to a display piece/competition piece.

"Don't use this method because you will not reach your full potential." That's such an out-dated way of thinking. It's like saying you shouldnt play a videogame on anything but extreme difficulty bacause you will learn better. Sure, but you also have to commit more resources like time and effort - both a luxury in short supply thesedays; all so you can do it to the absolute maximum potential? nah fam play how you wanna play and Paint how you wanna paint. smh people gatekeep the weirdest stuff thesedays.

Gatekeepers that I know are NOT the brightest! Some are NOT even good at what they do. They are mostly people with low self esteem, that put people down to make themselves feel good. 😊

You're a great painter, but I don't think you're right to say it's a dumb argument only because you don't agree with it. You're forgetting you were a beginner once, and slapchop, in my opinion, prevents new painters from learning key concepts that a top painter already has. You can integrate slapchop no problem, but you already have the key concepts for painting well learnt and solid. I am not saying slapchop is good or bad per se. I only believe it isn't a technique to start with as a beginner, although not everyone has to aim to be a contest winning painter, that's true.
@DonSuratos15 күн бұрын
It is a dumb argument. I do not get your point. It seems that your long statement is full of contradictions. I totally disagree that slapchop prevents new painters from learning key concepts that a top painter already has. First, NOT everyone aim to be a top painter. Then you said not everyone has to aim to be a contest winning painter. Second, slapchop OR painting with transparent / translucent paints, like contrast, speedpaints, inks and oil glazes, will actually teach you ( eventually ) how layering translucent paints requires knowledge in lighting and color theory. So if you insist learning traditional painting with acrylics is prevented because of slapchop, then your argument is very FLAWED. You seem to be arguing for the sake of arguing. 🙃

@@DonSuratos Lol yeah man, it's even funnier when being presented with a different opinion is considered arguing.😆 But anyway, I do enjoy watching your videos and your stuff. It's just a disagreement on something specific.

@ Nah… you were simply trying to “paint” me as a bad guy. Looking down on the commenter. However you were playing it safe not to call me out directly as you wanted, thus your long statement was all over the place. Bruh… I am used to being painted the bad guy. Blogger since 2009. 😅 Again, the commenter’s opinion is DUMB, and your initial statement is so FLAWED. 🙃 Okay, not let me enjoy my Netflix time. 👋🏽
