In ABRSM Grade 3 double stopping is already introduced in some of the pieces as a chord. I didnt find it too difficult technically but to make it sound musical too me quite awhile. This tutorial was actually very helpful. Thank you

I know I'm 5 years late but I'm trying to play Rockin' strings on the viola with double stops but I can't help but play one string at a time. I'm not getting consistent. Do I need more bow weight? What angle should I be placing my bow to play both strings? It's funny how when I don't want to play 2 strings at the same time, I end up doing that unintentionally but when I want to do it intentionally, it never works out

hi Alison.. I have a question on how to play the fifths with the double stopping having the same finger on both strings. I have a problem with finger placement. When I put my finger bowed it doesn't touch the other string resulting in an unwanted open string tone and when I flatten my finger one string or the other is out of tune. How should I position my finger and are there any excercises to train on?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor9 жыл бұрын
MrCojasviM Do you mean that for example you are playing an A on the G string with 1st finger and E on the D string also with 1st finger? If so, then you have to place the finger sort of in the middle of the 2 strings and flatten it slightly. Its difficult to do in itself, but you just have to play about with the finger position to get the right place, but just putting your finger on 1 string, will of course not allow you to play the other. Hope that makes sense.

I wrote an arrangement for my high school orch for Smells Like Teen Spirit and I wrote a double-stopped part for violin and it would call for a barred double-stop. My senior violin player is in favor of going divisi. She doesn't think barring should be done because the tone isn't as good. I don't notice the difference and it is very playable. What do you think?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor6 жыл бұрын
Totally depends on what the notes are, where they are on the violin and how possible it is to play barred. I play barred double stopping all the time and the tone isnt affected, but if you are arranging a part for orchestra where you have 1st violin and 2nd violin desks, it is cleaner to play divisi. If playing solo, you would barr them - assuming, you have written is as playable.

The parts are in fifths. I found a couple of other videos here that talked about the technical aspects using a "flat" finger to catch both strings evenly(so the fifths play in tune) and that rested my mind as to the legitimacy of playing double-stop fifths. The young student who I referred to said today, "I know you like to think out of the box but barred double-stops are just not done." I chuckled, "are you saying that no one has written literature with double-stopped fifths?" She didn't think so. I'll play the one video done by a Professor with a Russian accent dealing with this tomorrow. I feel better about this. Especially in a rock and roll kind of piece. Thanks and I have a bunch of your videos on my KZbin channel for reference for my students. They have been very helpful.

Very helpful Videos, I am just starting to venture into the violin world, and I am doing better than I have expected thanks to your series. Did you ever try a Stroh violin, these were used in the late 19th and early 20th century to make acoustical phonograph recordings, there is no wood body, rather it has an aluminum diaphragm attached to the bridge, and a horn directs the sound into the recording horn, sometimes there is a little horn that points at your ear so you can hear how you are playing
@TheOnlineViolinTutor11 жыл бұрын
you need to make sure the bridge it straight all the time and tune SLOWLY rather than just yanking the string in one go. You need to tune bit by bit as you cant just yank the strings and not expect the bridge to fall over. When i tune, it takes a while as i turn a teenie tiny bit, then check the bridge is straight, then go in for another tune, then check the bridge and keep doing that till its in tune.

you need peg paste, or soap on the peg to help it stay, Just rub a little of some bar soap (not liquid) on the peg and carry on.

I know this is off topic. But I just got a violin. And I used the g strings app you suggested and it says it is tuned perfectly. But my a and e strings sound the exact same. :(

i would just google it as it may be confusing without seeing it, as there are many measurements and i couldnt explain it all in here. There are about 7 if you want to do it properly so if you just google a picture will tell everything you need.

how do I play two notes that are directly under each other, for example a D on the A string and an A on the E string.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor11 жыл бұрын
they should not do, try a different app? Perhaps some apps are better than others. try the distance you are from the app as too close may be distorted.

I guess I should be feeling smug about myself too... I can do double-stops! Woo! I see you play closer to the fingerboard when you double-stop, which is what I was doing earlier today (just needed some confirmation).
@TheOnlineViolinTutor7 жыл бұрын
Yeah double stopping is just as hard as playing one string - you have to learn to play the 2 strings at once which is what you were initially trying to avoid!
@ambarrivera60497 жыл бұрын
The irony of all this is that when I try to play only one string I hit two, and when I double-stop, I hit only one! Why, just why?!
@channelterminatedanddead7 жыл бұрын
Because it's vaguely about a millimeter and it's easier to miss a millimeter than not missing it. You're obviously double-stopping too early.
@RobertShulerMusic2 жыл бұрын
I disagree about playing them with a flat bow. Beginners should play double stops on the edge of the bow hair because there is more give, and a wider angle over which the double stop works. Also play closer to the fingerboard where the strings have more give. It isn't as loud there, but playing two strings is naturally louder. Playing with flat bow close to the bridge makes them too harsh, and way too difficult for beginners.

This was nice to know. I’m struggling with this. When I’m trying Issa mess. Then I’ll accidently double stop and it will sound perfect.

Where would you play these notes if they were on their own? Answer that, then just play them together at the same time.

1st fibger on the A string will give you a B and th 4th finger on the D string will give you an A, but what music wants you to play that as that will clash?
