Super swag video josh. Out of curiosity Couldn't you just think of these in 4 as an over-the-bar line phrase (i.e. the first exercise could just be thought of as 5 measures of 4). what makes these odd time signatures vs. just odd groupings?

Yes, you could phrase things as 5 measures of 4, but everything would still resolve after 10 beats. If written in 4, that resolution would happen in the middle of a measure as opposed to landing right on beat 1. I generally like to reduce/simplify things as much as possible for the purposes of these kinds of videos. These patterns also don't really have any additional context, which would help solidify the underlying odd meters. For example, that song 'Dirt Soup' (briefly demonstrated toward the end of the video) is phrased as 2 measures of 7 instead of 7 measures of 4 since the bass line and guitar parts all resolve after 14 beats. Patterns that resolve after 2 measures feel much more natural to me than things that resolve in an odd number of measures (like 5 measures of 4 or 7 measures of 4).
