Wow, I really appreciate this video. I've been struggling with this technique for quite a while -- it seems to pop up fairly frequently, but until now I'd never seen an instructional video offer more guidance than, basically, "try to do this". I really love your leave-no-stone-unturned approach to teaching, Justin!

I've been playing guitar for 20+ years and I've always been struggling with this. Maybe because I played without a pick for years... or because I have a terrible sense of rythm 😅 I didn't know until now how this was called, which didn't help to find online tutorials on the subject. Thanks for this great lesson!

Thanks, Justin. I have been trying to learn this particular technique for a long, long time...but couldn't find anyone to explain it as succinct as you just did. All make sense to me now...what is left is to practice what you have just taught. Perhaps eventually against the click of a Metronome to bed in the timing. Bravo!

Thank you for this lesson Justin! I often saw my teacher doing this technique while he was performing, he would called it a Thirty-second note. I am also a guitar teacher myself so i can understand what he was talking about. I love the way how you explain it, it just make it easier and accessible for everyone, and thanks for the wrist technique! I think it is the key element to perform this well. I am reading the GuitarTechniques Dec issue, always enjoy your column "Food For Thought", cheers and have a great day.

I got a guitar for Christmas in 2012 but didn't get proper lessons till 2013. I watched your Tequila Sunrise lesson. I've always wanted to learn that technique. But over the years I've had a few bad teachers thankfully I've a great guitar teacher now. I only brought up the song a couple of times but I thought I wasn't doing it right so I just played it without the framing. I can do the hammer one pretty well 😁😁

@richellmcknight4462 жыл бұрын
Aside from just practice practice practice, do you have any suggestions to lock a rhythm into our brain that we find challenging? I learned to play so I can accompany myself when I sing, and I find it a challenge when the rhythm I'm playing is different that the lyrical rhythm or when I'm trying to use an unfamiliar rhythm where I have to concentrate on the guitar, and then try to sing too- my hand just automatically goes back to the familiar one, ugh! So frustrating!

Do you have any advice for triple strums? There are a few funk guitarists who will be mostly strumming sixteenth notes but sometimes throw in some sixteenth note triplets. It sounds really cool, but when I try to do it I tend to lose the rhythm and it sounds less cool.
01:33 you got it wrong, it's missing one "DU" to make the Darude Sandstorm song!

this is absolute learner ok but really too stupid simple.. how/maybe you try something really challenging! yes maybe try...let's think! ''yeah''... emulate that strum by Joni Mitchell the one she uses on her, both sides now tune just love you to attempt that tricky double strum (and I think its not double tracked either) it like two in the space of one. one is skinny thin pick strummed going down and the other up strummed Rasgueado brushed style by a finger behind the plectrum''. damn hard as it can get.. but very appropriate for the intro of that song just a perfect trick to fool the ear with the guitar capo'd and in an altered tuning. makes it almost invisible and very cleverly done by Joni. what learners need to be shown, is real tricks , that can be used and not spend or waste their time tricks should be pointed out so the student can(identify) learn to hear when a trick is employed or where to concentrate on technique. maybe it is good to be a copycat but must be an individual at the same time is, the goal.
