Tabitha and Paul Rawlinson want to double the size of their small country cottage in Kent, and creating more space for their young family is high on the list of priorities, but blending the old with the new is the dream. With both an extension and restoration project on their hands, the couple face a challenging build. Sarah also meets Jim and Elaine who are looking to update their uninspiring 1960s semi to make room for their growing family. The problem is, they only have a tiny budget and a very specific timescale.

The thing I've learnt from watching a plethora of these shows, is the importance of a Construction Site Manager; the person who COORDINATES EVERYTHING, so that materials arrive BEFORE your workers, (so you're not paying them to sit around, waiting for supplies)... who sees to it that things are done properly ... and sees to it that the build comes in ON BUDGET. It is a REAL/ACTUAL job with major consequences.

That lavender cabinet wall looks like a Disney train car. They did everything else so beautifully - why not have the doors a lovely wood like the beams?

I was hoping a lighter color like the walls to conceal it more. Or if they really wanted color, they should have matched it with their olive green kitchen cabinets..

Ive so enjoyed this series, and have learned you should have at least 50% more cash over your original budget as surprises always pop up. Sarah does a wonderful job hosting and giving out great advice and the benefits of her years of experience for free. I wish we had a Sarah in the U.S.. Its fascinating to watch the build and have Sarah with her tablet gadget show a better option to a room change. Im sad that this series went no farther, I could really do with more.

This is probably one of my favorite episodes from this show. I love a good restoration project. And for some reason, I hate extensions that look totally in contrast to the existing building. These 2 houses demonstrated that matching the extension with the original character of the house is the most sensible thing to do when doing these kinds of project while still having the modern conveniences & features inside. Jim was such a hardworking man! Kuddos to him. And to Paul & Tabitha for respecting the old cottage & the whole neighborhood. Although I despise that purple cabinet in the bedroom. Overall, great transformation for both homes.

Loved the see-through fireplace. Best part of the redo imo. Don't think the timber ceiling was worth the cost, both time and money wise. The ceiling could have been open, and supports painted white. These shows are great because they educate people about real issues with remodeling and building. Must have a generous contingency fund, and a Plan B, when things go wrong.

The oak-beam ceiling is a very desirable feature to the Brits. The cost is spread over the longevity of the house, plus it would pay for itself in resale value, and a bit extra.

That purple was a wrong choice. Made the room cheap and tacky. Should have opted for a normal wood stain to complement the amazing beamwork. But it's their home after all. Who am I to say?, 😁 And the other couple only spent 50K? That's phenomenal. Great job and great family.

Loved the dedication shown with creating the 50K addition. Hope his wife truly appreciated it. Stressful process while pregnant, but she needs to relax a bit, imo. It is his home, too, and he is busting his butt to build her dream home and gave up garage space to boot.

He built it not for her, but for them and their children :) It sounds as if you believe her is the house ("He built it for her") and he has only a (partly-given up) garage as "private space". Imagine she has no "private space" for her at all. Everything she "has" is shared. I hope you do not count open kitchen as hers ;) They both respect their needs and understand what having a family is, I guess. Love that family! Very inspiring!

So many of these episodes wouldn't exist if people used condoms. And I don't understand why, when faced with such a tight deadline and limited budget, these people are wasting their time and money putting down solid brick walls when you could timber-frame and stone veneer the additions in a third of the time for half the price... Beautiful end product, but dear god, a little common sense or a quick chat with an actual qualified GC would go a long way...
