With the NES version, we were all used to having 4 lives at the start, and with DD2, able to use 2 player B mode to kill Jimmy and get a total of 8. Then Double Dragon 3 arrives and is super tough, but it only gave you ONE life to start! (I learned later that each character you win is kind of another "life" but i could only make it to Chin at the time, and thought he was useless) THAT'S what killed the NES sales. It was the biggest topic on the school ground at the time! Everybody rented it ONCE, and that was it. I rented it again with a game genie and finally beat it. Then as an adult i realized Chin isn't useless, he's basically a cheat code!! Now i can beat the game without game genie!

DD3 on the NES is still until this day, one of my top10 best nes games ever made. i need to point out, i played the famicom version as a kid, so no Bimmy joke for me. The game looked great, had a great soundtrack and a great 2 player co-op, it was also challening enough for my then 10 years old self and brother and cousins. There is also an updated version that seems exclusive to the switch with no sprite flicker and uses more buttons, it is highly recommened. Shame really about the arcade one, it looked great but was made in a hurry .... anw, the nes version is a 10/10 for me.

I didn’t actually mind Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone on Amiga in the early 90s. It was one of the few side scrolling beat em ups that actually made it to that platform. Most ‘Arcade’ stuff was on Sega and Nintendo platforms, namely the SNES and MegaDrive. Could they download Jolly Roger’s Cookbook from a BBS? No! Did they have Mario, Sonic and a bunch of Capcom stuff? Yes.

I remember buying DD3 from a pawn shop and hating it, which is one of the few "bad" purchases I've made across my personal history. I wanted to like it but, I don't know if this was just me, but I found the game impossibly difficult - right from the first screen it was a fight for survival, and personally played more like some kind of endless mode to see how far I could get. Never did beat it, even with Game Genie. Maybe I'm just bad at DD3 in particular, to this I've never had such a difficult time with a beat 'em up. It made Final Fight look like a game for babies with no limbs.

It was amazing how the arcade back home went from half 80s games and half beat em ups to being flooded with several Street Fighter and MK machines so quickly. Granted, I only got to go a few times a year, but every trip in 1990-1994 felt like stepping forward an entire year in technology. I never remember anyone touching the DD3 machine, guess this was half the reason! Those were amazing times to be a gamer. And yeah, the cash shop is garbage... But you could easily accomplish the same thing in a game like X Men by dumping in five bucks of extra lives. At that point you can fly through the game by spamming your special attack. Not defending this practice, just saying half the arcade was P2W until competitive fighters made for a more balanced multiplayer experience.

Well, the "cash grab" would benefit the arcade operators, not Technos directly. It's not the last game to do that, either: "Riding Hero" on the Neo Geo (a weird motorcycle racing/RPG hybrid) required you to insert one credit for 15 minutes of gameplay, for a game that under ideal circumstances required 3 hours or so of gameplay, and there was no other way to gain time in-game.

Funny story, when i got Double dragon 2 on the NES it was a while after it released. I loved the game but it did take me a fair amount of time to finish it, especially after playing the normal difficulty only to learn i had to play the highest difficulty to truly complete it. Anyways one night after i finally finished it and saw the awesome ending i was so amazed at how good the game was that i wanted more. The ending seemed to imply this would be the case. I went to bed thinking omg i wonder when this awesome 3rd installment will come? The next morning i turned on the TV and while watching cartoons, the very first commercial for double dragon 3 was shown and i was blown away, i couldn't believe that after just one day of whishing for this, my prayers were answered. Anyways once i got it for the NES, it was a dissapointment. Combat did not feel fluid and precise like DD2, the story was also weak and levels uninspired. I could overlook all these things if it wasn't for one major flaw of the game design that completely ruined the game for me. And it's the fact that all you need to do to see the entire level is run towards the end of it, as there were no segments to prevent you from doing so. You could basically stand at the beginning of the level or run towards the end of it then finish all enemies off vs. how beat em ups normally progress which is, eliminate a few foes, advace a segment, beat up some more foes advance another segment and so on until you reach the end of the level. Thus allowing you to appreciate each segment of a level. Don't understand how this major flaw in this type of a game was overlooked.
