72 Camaro Glove Box Lock Rekeyed

All though, not an official Project OverKill video, we celebrate a small victory in making some progress on the project. In this vid I re-key the new gm replacement lock bezel to work with my original key.

Well that worked great, my latch has always been loose so finally getting around to fixing it. Was very hard to get apart and maybe my lock is screwed up but bench re-assembled and now I can pull the cylinder out when the key is inserted, no tools needed. May order a new lock. I found to remove hex shaped retainer nut, that using a bolt with 1/2" head on it fits in there after grinding to of the points down. By locking two nuts together on the threaded section of the modified bolt you have a tool that will let you tighten that retainer down. A few drops of blue lock-tite is probably a good idea. Update, figured out why I can pull the cylinder out of the lock on the bench, without that retaining nut on there that is normal, the nut is what you are working the pins down to get past.

@@DoubleRRestorations hey Russ this is a little bit off the subject but I had a question for you. So I pulled off my steering shaft off the Camaro last night to redo the rag joint. There is a lot of in and out play at the joint closest to the steering wheel, is that normal or should there be no play at all?

@@BustedClassicGarage I'll double check mine tonight, but if I remember right, the top slides over two bearing caps with a boot covering it. I think that some play is normal in that joint.

Awesome, thanks man! Have you rebuilt one of those rag joints yet, talk about not being able to get the right parts anywhere... I think I got it figured out though... all the resto shop offer is a larger version compared to the smaller one on the '79. I was going to shoot video but I just need to get it done, maybe after its all together.

nice work.. the 77 Firebird i owned had the same lock. Do you have the power trunk on your 81? When you opened the glove box door on the Firebird there was a yellow button on the lower left side. The one I had always worked fine. The trunk would really pop open about half way. Those trunk lids were pretty light though with good hinges

How do you put the chrome part back on

Its crimped on and fell off the old original one. I just pushed it back on. I didn't reuse that part though. The new part also comes with a new chrome knob.
