The purpose of the original book was to basically tell kids if they keep acting like jack asses they'll turn into one. Disney's first Pinocchio adaption was fine despite being softer as book Pinocchio's faults wouldn't have translated into a likable character on the big screen. So it made sense for Disney to tone his character down to a well meaning kid who well gets into trouble because he's a kid. But with this movie Disney missed the entire point of Pinocchio by making him perfect at the start. There's two layers of absolute fail

OG Disney version did it the best because Pinocchio was a NEUTRAL party to his own story. He was neither good nor evil, he was a puppet both metaphorically and literally. And as a puppet, he's constantly pulled in different directions by people with their own agendas. And just like a kid, his mind is malleable and easy to manipulate. It's only when Pinocchio starts thinking for himself and starts using his newfound sentience to be brave is when he earns the right to cut off his strings and becomes a real boy. Hell, the movie even spells this out with "I got no strings on me"! This remake fundamentally misunderstands the source material it's drawing from, and it's even worse when it's the same company that made the original.

I recently saw the short trailer for The Little Mermaid and my eyes shot clear into the back of my skull when the actress/singer playing Ariel turned one note into several with some vocal gymnastics. I saw it last night and I had a lot of mixed thoughts on it. The characters are often underused and the Easter eggs felt last minute. I couldn't take Tom Hanks seriously as Gepetto and Giuseppe Battiston as Stromboli looks like a guy cosplaying the character. The CGI looks uncanny and are used in scenes that it reminds me of the Image Movers Digital films (Polar Express, Christmas Carol, Mars Needs Moms) I did enjoy that Pinocchio's arc was about him feeling bullied for being a puppet and that the ballerina puppet is who he can relate too. I also enjoyed the setting of Pleasure Island. But, I agree with Martin the ending just RUINED it! It just tells us 'Oh, he becomes a real boy...eventually, maybe...I think. If you are going to remake it make sure it's different and actually looks interesting until then keep to the animated original stuff. I definitely enjoy these remakes more than I know a lot of people do, but even I can acknowledge this movie was weak. When it comes to the musical remakes I feel like Beauty and the Beast is their best one because they actually got a director with a musical theater background. Action directors like Guy Richie, Jon Favreau, and especially Robert Zemeckis have no business working within this medium. I'm definitely excited for Rob Marshall's Little Mermaid next year, though. I'm sure he'll knock it out of the park!

When i try to watch the 2022 Disney Pinnochio I think the writing of the story is much heading to the message of anti-ableism rather than focusing about a strong moral compass to distinguish between right and wrong which is the center plot of Pinnochio is telling about Even the ending sounded doesn't giving concrete conclusion I basically wasting my time to watch an expensive fancy special effects minus well-written plots

I watched this with my kids and they really enjoyed it. I think the problem with generational change is that after being raised up as the target of aggressive marketing, we’re not adjusting well to not being the target of marketing anymore. If I was a kid now, this Pinocchio would be timely. Kids don’t want to watch 80 year old cartoons when everything else lately is cgi or hybrid. Disney needs a way to keep these properties current, and kids want a version of these stories for their time. No doubt kids could enjoy the classics, but it’s not representative of their generation.
@mikethegrape12 жыл бұрын
I'm more than sure adults watched the original cartoon and enjoyed it too. Regardless of marketing. There is an artistry and a charm to the cartoon that is missing from the remake. Cartoons, back in the day, were hard and expensive to make. There was no room for fat on that dish. The timing & rhythm was on point. Each emotion had to hit through the celluloid. In the live action version, they seem almost desperate to purposefully make each scene monotonous as possible. But like this review says, "It was a nice experiment."

Not to mention that there's a good number of really great, successful 2D-animated shows and films that kids today enjoy. New versions of She-Ra and My Little Pony, Adventure Time, Owl House, Steven Universe, tons of anime, etc etc. Plus kids today still enjoy the classics as well (my baby cousin loves Little Mermaid). Good art is good art (well-made, full of heart, funny, interesting, etc) regardless of generation imo. Same with poorly made crap, especially cash grab remakes.
@rui54212 жыл бұрын
I’m not saying the old stuff wasn’t fun for adults, nor that kids “can’t” enjoy 2-d animation. My kids enjoy the classics, but they recognize that they’re old and out of date. Many kids are raised on 3-d animation. It relates to them as modern media. Hell I recall watching classic looney tunes growing up, but I knew it was old and didn’t relate to it as “my generations” media. All I’m saying is, these current movies aren’t unenjoyable and as korey said, if we didn’t know the originals, we’d find these to be just fine, if not lacking in the way a lot of kids media does for adults. Even if you feel the classics were better and i think its generous to assume that adults all felt it was high media at the time. I reckon most of us only know the direct impressions of our parents and grandparents who were young when the movies came out. We just have to be honest, the general standard of kids media, especially Disney is along this level. I love the classics, but watch them without the nostalgia. They’re a bit superficial and undercooked in spots too.

Why does Disney have to honor the Italian story roots when these are remakes which means they can do anything they want lol. Anyway, nearly all of these Disney remakes have sucked ass except Jungle Book yet people keep seeing them so blame the audience for the fact they are still being made.

The design of Pinocchio in this kinda works, in the original he didn’t look that distinct from human kids face wise. But in this one he is so bizarre that it actually does make him an attraction for most.

The only Pinocchio I'm looking forward is the stop motion movie. That's the only Pinocchio movie I'm generally excited for. The remakes that released after The Jungle Book have nothing that makes them stand with the originals. They add new pointless scenes that don't further the story, they rely on the original as a way to get people interested in the remakes, instead of trying something new, they just rehashed the same movies with a different coat of paint. The remakes are just the same films but with a different coat of paint.

I was so drained after this movie, I had to turn it off at some points and go clean something just to improve my mood. the old Disney Pinocchio had better pacing and driving the plot forward. kinda sad how the Disney remakes haven’t improved. But I guess when it’s mostly cash grabs, it looks and feels soulless.

@inkonsistency2 жыл бұрын
I think the reason why the live action remakes feel like husks of the former movies is because the originals had passion, inspiration and heart put into them. Like the original Pinocchio, Walt literally sold his car and house and got into debt for that movie to happen. You wouldn't see modern Disney doing that these days. Quite the opposite, actually.

The first 30-40 minutes i thought was actually rather Charming. It's the rest of the film that kind of falls off for me, in some scenes Pinocchio looked great and on other scenes he looked too much like a Digital character.
