My aunt said the same thing when we saw this movie. Had it been about mental illness, and this is a grown man who had gone through something very traumatic as a child, and this is how he disassociates from reality, it could have been something different and creative. This was just creepy.

Pinocchio trying to kill the Cricket here is actually worse. Sure, he doesn’t succeed, but in the original, he just threw a mallet at the Cricket without much thought, hoping to scare him off, but his aim proved more accurate than he thought. Here though, he’s actively trying to kill him.

The book originally ended with Pinocchio hung on that tree and dying. It was supposed to be one of those "lessons" for kids to behave, or they would end up like him. But people didn't like this ending, so the author went back and had the blue fairy save him, and continued the story.

Roberto Benigni was clearly very passionate about Pinocchio and you can see the seeds of a good adaption here. But good movies are usually a collaborative effort, and unfortunately, much like with Mike Myers’ Love Guru and similar ill-conceived vanity projects, Benigni was surrounded by yes-men who went along with and enabled whatever radical, counterintuitive idea he had, like deciding that he should play Pinocchio himself while pushing 50 XD I'd say Benigni should have played Geppetto instead but he wound up doing that nearly 20 years later in Matteo Garrone's Pinocchio, which did receive better reviews from what I hear, so good for him.

I haven't seen the film, but I did read the original novel as an adult some years ago, and let me tell you, it is a truly baffling work. I recognized some of the things they mentioned in this video: I remember the gorilla judge, I remember Pinocchio getting lynched, I remember him killing the talking cricket then it coming back to haunt him as a ghost. Beyond all that, the story isn't even coherent on its own terms. For example, the book describes Gepetto creating Pinocchio and how he comes to life and starts talking. His being able to walk and talk from literally his first moments of existence is weird enough. But then it has him get up and instantly run out of the house, and he spends the first chunk of the novel as a runaway wandering the outside world. Then he starts to become homesick and it says he misses Gepetto--this despite the fact that the novel indicated he'd had absolutely no relationship with him, they were effectively strangers! I know it's a kid's book, I know it's from the 19th century, I know it's from a different country. There must be some cultural context that was just lost. And it makes you better appreciate what Disney was able to do in making this very strange story accessible to American audiences, including generations of kids.

Not sure which is worst but I'd say in terms of the best: Disney's 1940 version is the best overall in terms of adaptation to the screen. However, if you want to know which is the best version that's close to the book storyline check out the 1978 version. It's animated and rarely gets mentioned and many don't know it even exists. The full movie is here on KZbin in English.

In Italy Roberto Benigni is a very well known comedian. Back in the '80 and the '90 he has acted and directed some very funny movies ("There is nothing left but crying" is one of his best). And yes, he has always been totally crazy on italian TV, I would say in a "surrealistic" way. And people loved it. "Life is beautiful" was his first "serious" movie, with a serious subject. From than on he became less of a comedian/director and more of a lecturer. He is more known for reciting and explaining Dante's Divine Comedy now. In Italy people consider "Le avventure di Pinocchio", a TV series by director Comencini, the best adaptation ever of the story.

I remember seeing this movie once in elementary school (it was the subbed version) and recalled the Fox and the Cat being presented as regular human hobos who just call themselves “Fox” and “Cat”. That’s some Mandela effect right there, because I was shocked to see that they actually looked like rejects from 1996’s The Island of Dr. Moreau XD It was even more shocking to learn that in the English dub, Fox is played by Cheech Marin, who oddly enough, offers one of the better performances in this, along with Kevin James as Mangiafuoco.

I've never seen it, but apparently the original Italian version of this film is considerably better than the English recut and dub--still not particularly good, but way more bearable, and as Martin and Korey mention in this video, it's still a closer adaptation of the source material. Also, as disastrous as this movie was, I'd still recommend some of Benigni's other comedies, especially "Johnny Stecchino" and "The Monster," if you're looking for a good slapstick/mistaken identity movie that's a little bit different. Benigni's output may be inconsistent, but he really did hit on a solid formula in the 80s and 90s.

I never actually understood the fuss about pinocchio being played by an adult. This movie clearly adopts a more theater like approach, as in if the movie tells you that something is a certain thing, you have to believe it. So if, according to the reality of the movie, he is a wooden boy, you have to pretend you're indeed watching a wooden boy, the same way the fox and the cat are simple human beings and every other kid is played by an adult

I didn't know theater plays had giant CGI sharks or men placed against greenscreens so they can look as tiny as a Cricket. This movie doesn't present itself like a theater play, that's the problem. If they had fully committed to that aesthetic and framed the cinematography and set designs as such, then more power to them, but that's not the case here, or if it was, they didn't fully commit to it.

@@daliborjovanovic510 i feel like they committed to it as far as they could, the set itself is very fake and it never feels like a real town, and I think it was on purpose seing how much the movie cost. Yoooo did this movie come out before “Tropic Thunder”? Because with how Roberto is acting, while wearing that wig, he’s just like Ben Stiller’s “Simple Jack” character from that movie. Stiller had to be roasting this!
@afterdinnercreations936
@afterdinnercreations936 11 ай бұрын
Nah. Stiller was likely roasting ALL the actors playing mentally-challenged people. Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump," Daniel Day-Lewis in "My Left Foot," obviously Sean Penn in "I Am Sam," etc. Eventually, they'd do it unironically in Sia's "Music."

This movie scared me as a kid. It feels like a surreal artsy film but wants to be a wholesome kids movie and it’s very jarring. EDIT: I don’t remember him getting fucking LYNCHED.

I think in the original telling. The blue fairy estinguish bits of her life force every time she helped Pinocchio with her magic. That's why she was sparing with it. In the end she died with her last effort.

DT, you all have to review Michael Flatley's(formerly Lord of the Dance) new movie Blackbird. Kermode just had a long rant on it. As for this version of Pinocchio, it's basically Hollywood trying to make a foreign film for "children".

From what I understand, I think the American dubbed is the really awful version, since the original Italian language version had a more mixed response

Said mixed responses mainly came from Italy. I haven't seen anyone outside of it having a glowing opinion of the movie. Having seen the original via subs, I can say that it's not much different from the US version.

Well, Monstro was a creation of Disney. in the book there was “Il Terrible Pescecane” or “The Terrible Dogfish” which was more like a shark than a whale. Also in the book, it’s terrifying but here it just looks goofy.

I’m sure the movie would have been shit regardless but I wouldn’t judge it with the dubbing. I don’t think the original filmmakers have any control over that. Bad dubbing can even make the best films look bad - like Parasite for example.

So Pinocchio is I guess part of a minority in this world (living puppets), and the rest of his people are held as slaves by the giant puppet master. Meanwhile, the Fox and the Cat dress up in cloaks and hoods with pointy heads, chase after Pinocchio during the night and lynch his ass? I know they said they wanted his gold coins, but I’m getting the feeling something else was going on there XD

Awww, I loved this version 😅 It was very accurate to the book. BUT I understand why this film is panned. I to had a hard time accepting an adult middle aged man playing pinocchio lmao. When I saw it though I loved it. As I said above it was very accurate to the original source. I was super happy to see Roberto returned to play Gheppeto in the recent itallian film which is also really good and accurate to the book.
