Corey has a point about diversity and it's been an issue in comics for about 15 years. Instead of launching brand new characters and stories, Disney half-commits by recasting old media with diverse casts, with bloated scripts, ugly visuals and lackluster aesthetics The result is that when they underperform based on redundace and poor writing, it gives the "woke mob" KZbinrs ammunition to bash anything that doesn't fit into their narrow view of entertainment. The thing is, it can be done well if the people involved actually care and don't use the diverse cast as an excuse to hide behind poor craftsmanship. My prime example? The Spiderverse movies have a bi-racial lead and in the mainstream press it isn't the main subject, the main subject is the quality and artistry of the films. Representation should be the baseline, not the selling point. It needs to be representation that complements quality media.

The name Snow White originates from the character's appearance, as described in the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. In the story, Snow White's mother wishes for a child "with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony." When her wish comes true, the baby is named Snow White to reflect her snowy-white complexion. This description emphasizes the fairy-tale ideal of beauty at the time, symbolizing purity and innocence. The name, however, also serves as a thematic device, contrasting Snow White's inner goodness with the jealousy and cruelty of the Evil Queen.
@piranhapout8 сағат бұрын
I was hoping someone would comment this. ❤
@Arosukir657 минут бұрын
Iirc, that interpretation comes from later versions of the story. The character's name was actually Snow Drop, as in the flower. And her mother didn't originally mention which parts would be which color. She asks for "a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as a raven's wing." Though the parts that were chosen for each color in later versions did make sense with European beauty standards, they have at times instead been interpreted as white teeth, rosy cheeks, and shiny black eyes, since the story was more about innocence than beauty and those were indicative of healthy children. Since Snow White was supposed to be like, ten in the original story. "But doesn't she get married to a prince?" folks might ask. Well, the prince originally has his servants carry her coffin around for many years (presumably during which she reached maturity since she was sleeping and not dead). *Then* she woke up (because they dropped the coffin and the poisoned apple piece became dislodged) and married the prince. Wild story. Not saying the white skin thing is wrong, per se. I just find it fun to think of the ways that fairy tales change over time.

9:21 I heard actor Peter Dinkage did some negotiation with Hollywood execs to regulate any other dwarves actors but him from getting any major roles which explains why Disney execs went with CG?
@XxXShadowchanXxX8 сағат бұрын
Yeah I heard something similar. I don't remember the exact details and I may be over simplifying the situation but appearently Dinklage caused some kind of fracas about dwarf representation in Snow White being bad and cause of that Disney back away from using actual dwarfs for the movie. Of course, the actual dwarfs were angry cause they wanted the roles, and Dinklage may have ruined their chances of appearing on the big screen because of how rare dwarf roles are.

Initially, they cast non little people with the exception of one, but after they released an on-set photo it caused a bit of a stir. At least it did online. So Disney then went back to reshoot which is now why we have the CGI "magical beings". Of course that now has put a spotlight back on the fact that they still didn't cast little people. If Disney would have just hired a writer that could have fleshed out the dwarves and made them more nuanced then I don't think they'd be in this mess.

Said this in another comment, but iirc, the older version of the story (before the Grimms got hold of it) had the character named Snow Drop, after the flower. A delicate flower that manages to thrive in cold, terrible conditions. The translation we read in my class (called From Grimms To Disney, literally a class about the history of fairy tales and how they evolved up to and including Disney) had the description as the mom wanting "a child red as blood, white as snow, and black as a raven's wing." We talked about the fact that because the story is about Snow Drop's innocence/naivete rather than just her beauty, can be interpreted as rosy cheeks, white teeth, and shiny black eyes. Traits of a healthy child. The Grimms, and later the Disney, versions have become the most popular nowadays, even in the countries that the story originally came from. Like how folks think of glass slippers when they think of Cinderella instead of fur shoes.

That image of the dwarf reminds me of a bit that Robert Zemeckis mentioned in the Roger Rabbit commentary. He mentioned how Richard Williams said that when it came to animation, making human characters were so difficult because you couldn’t exaggerate motion for them, whereas the dwarves in the 1937 Snow White could be more malleable given their size and shape were not considered “normal.” It almost feels like that works in the opposite way for this film.

True maybe but they’re very few and far between, unfortunately.

24:00 Korey's hitting the point. The diversity doesn't mean much because at the end of the day, the live-action remake library is nothing but passionless, disposable garbage. These films are forgotten about within a year or two by both audiences and Disney themselves. They toss it aside and focus on the next big thing that'll make headlines. There's no lasting power with these, so sticking diversity in the most forgettable tier of your releases means nothing.

Ok maybe its Me for not taking any of the remakes seriously, but arent these Kids movies? I watched the originals as a Kid (also the originals are still available) but I have no intention of watching any of these now as I am a grown man. Let kids watch it and if they dont like em ok, or if people dont like it, ok dont watch it, it will lose money, and theyll try something else. I personally dont care about changing races, or backgrounds, or anything else because the Oringinal still exists. This is just my opinion, I never understood people getting so upset over the mermaid changes when the oringinal movie is still there?? Maybe its Me idk

I got nothing against the actress but there were some red flags with her in interviews. Just another so-called feminist shitting on the original and claiming that their version is better. These kind of actresses always wanna complain about the original Disney princesses so-called flaws. Yet it pretty much shows that they either misinterpreted, or did not actually see the movie. Just going by with some trolls from social media like Reddit. For example, Ariel did not give up everything for a guy. She wanted legs and explore the land. “Getting the guy” was a bonus.

They hated Barbie it made billions, they hated Wicked and it’s doing great. Just see if the movie is fun until you make up reasons to hate it.

Martin said it best in one sentence to sum up how I feel about all these live action remakes. "Did we need that?" and the answer is always no. lol

The only flip side to this is that eventually Disney is going to run out of movies to remake unless they get really REALLY desperate and remake there not so loved titles like The Black Cauldron or Strange World
@ripman216 сағат бұрын
I think a lot of people are not seeing the larger picture. The live remakes are not made for fans of the originals. Sure there is a level of nostalgia there but it's not the primary reason. It's not really for a "cash grab" either. They do it to retain the IP rights.

Crazy thing is that there was a time when they did live action remakes of some classics. There was some effort to tell the same story with a few differences that still made it entertaining. I liked the live action Dalmatians, Cinderella, and Jungle Book. They told us the same stories but had slightly different endings. "Effort" is key. When there is no effort, your customers will see it and point it out. Hell, I'll even throw in Maleficent 1 and 2 for sort of exploring more of that character and her origins.

They see their live action movie like Lion King make money that they are now making a prequel to the lion king and they are thinking lets make more live actions. They have this which looks awful. A live action Lilo and Stitch and live action Moana. So its like they are learning the wrong lessons.

@DLWELD8 сағат бұрын
The whole live thing just doesn't work - when Snow White opens the dwarve's door - all the vermin come in. Not a good thing, pooping and scratching all over the place. The cartoon thing it was OK - but not the "live action" - it is just badly misconcieved. Just re-issue the cartoon version - easy and would get more revenue.

@@Laurenlife Two of them are from Pixar. Encanto was great and one reason why I want them to make new originals. There been other movies like Wish. My main point still stands, because I'm pretty sure the sequels or remake are more in quantity vs originals. This not just a Disney problem. This is a Hollywood studios problem...
@renji909985 сағат бұрын
It’s been well obvious that the only reason that they are doing these live action so that Disney can still claim the copyright. And because they’re Disney they just copy and paste with a tiny change. Nostalgia isn’t going to save you.

I think one of the main issue with dwarfs is there's no squash and stretch with the animation. Their so stiff and slow. Its like an old person trying to dance.
