Thing is, a lot of actors do this. Film Brain talked about it years ago in his review of Strange Wilderness. To paraphrase, actors will take easy jobs to decompress after tough and demanding roles. See Eddy Redmayne. Les Mis, the Theory of Everything . . . then Jupiter Ascending and a Thomas the Tank Engine movie. Consider that RDJ didn't just come off playing A movie or even A series but a years-long transformation of himself and the character he was playing. In that light, doesn't Dolittle being a scatterbrained layabout with an adventurous past that he's glad to have over kind of make sense?

The sad part (okay, there are a lot of em) is that there is a good story here. Character loses his wife, is depressed and exiled himself from society, but is called to save the life of someone who he owes. There’s a legit set up for a good story. I’ll even admit that the animals make okay characters... most of them anyway. Actually, the more I think about it why wasn’t the girl the main character of this movie? Seriously, she had far more personality and was the most memorable character.
@DSan-kl2yc4 жыл бұрын
I don't see how having a little girl remind him of his wife is a good idea that isn't just pedophilic. And you can just as easily say that the boy reminds him of himself ect. But maybe it'd be fine.
@tjjordan42074 жыл бұрын
@@DSan-kl2yc You misunderstand what I'm saying. I get what you mean by 'pedophilic' if it was purely because she was a girl and looked similar to his wife. But that's not what I was meaning in terms of 'reminding him of his wife'. I've seen movies where a character is reminded of someone they loved through a child or even grown up that never came off as 'pedephilic' or anything in that nature. The girl in the movie, while not entirely done well, had courage and excitement for things, especially for Doolittle's world. I'm talking about her character traits that could be revealed as similar to Lily's but yet also different. Doolittle maybe reminded of her through her but he'll only see her as a child he and Lily could have had and feel responsible for her.

@GlassesnMouthplates4 жыл бұрын
Indeed. A story about a gifted doctor who served the queen, found his lover, only to tragically lost her at one point of their adventure should be a decent enough plot for a fantasy movie. Dolittle was barely even presented as a character who had a change of heart after recuperating from the loss of his wife and curing the queen (which was motivated by him not wanting to lose his house) so why did they even bother establishing a detailed backstory only to have it followed by a generic "Find the plot device treasure" storyline?

This movie is another movie screwed over by studio mandate and test audiences. Originally the movie was much closer to the tone of the first trailer. An exciting but heartfelt adventure movie. Think something like homeward bound. But the studios didn't understand why it was so "serious" since it was a kids movie so they forced reshoots to make it more "funny" and frantic. Which is why the script, pacing and editing is all over the place, scenes were actors are dubbed, the voices actors for the animals keep spouting bad improv and constantly do snarky quips.

Girl = sweet and ravishingly innocent with a pure heart of gold (Cinderella, Aurora in Malificent, the witches in Wrinkle in Time, girl in Dumbo, this girl in Doolittle). And if it's a youngish Male = constantly amazed and smiling at everything he sees ...aside from praising the female lead that is literally his only role (Calvin in Wrinkle in Time, Bert from Mary Poppins, this dude in Doolittle). I mean, for some reason Disney nails having interesting characters in their animated films! But they think the live action versions have to be wispy and waiflike with no discernable personality in order to achieve that "fairytale effect."

Yeah, it was pretty infamous for being a bomb, a critical failure, and only receiving a best picture nomination thanks to extensive campaigning. That phrase kind of shocked me when he said that. Also, wasn’t it was made by 20th Century Fox, not Disney?

What about this: the movie could’ve been an origin story about Doolittle, including lily and how he met the animals, rather then this dumpster fire. Oh and it would all be animated ( in what I believe is rotoscope, but I could be wrong).

It seemed so logical to put it in there, it would give a viewer at least one moment of..like..thinking about something? But no, instead I was forced to visualize in my head all the details of the scene in which Dolittle is getting into the dragon`s ass trying to find something in..there.. Dr. Dolittle from 1967 staring Rex Harrison as the leading roll is the only version where the animals don’t actually talk, where as ALL the ones w/Eddie Murphy, ‘Dolittle’s daughter,’ & now Robert Downey Jr. have given the animals voices so that we too can understand them. The whole point of both the original movie & it’s book of origins was that no one but Doolittle could understand the animals (audience or Reader-unless someone wants to correct me on the book part, it’s been a while since I’ve read it).
