Jim Henson actually hated coffee. That was his inspiration for the ads. He tried thinking of what would convince him to drink cup of coffee. "Well, maybe if someone held a gun to my head...."

The purpose of the muppets/puppets is that they could do things you couldn't do to people. Same with cartoonists like Tex Avery, and Chuck Jones. Their wacky animations, the violence, were things that you couldn't even fake on live TV. It allowed them to go to absurd levels.

Here's my idea for a movie pitch: The evil precursor Kermit puppet from the Wilkins coffee commercial gets a psychological slasher horror comedy thriller from Brian Henson (director of "The Happytime Murders"), co-producing the film with Lisa Henson through their The Jim Henson Company banner, Henson Alternative, Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions and working from a script by Christopher Landon ("Paranormal Activity", "Happy Death Day" and "Freaky"). The plot of the movie itself is an extremely violent and cartoonishly sadistic farce, very loosely inspired by the Dr. Seuss story of "Green Eggs and Ham". The evil Wilkins puppet will have to be played by none other than Steve Whitmire, AKA the original Kermit the frog after the death of Jim Henson in early 90's. 🐸☕☠ Well, what are your thoughts? 🤔

To JIM's defense, back then it was the wild west for advertising, and entertainment for film and tv. Anything goes for the sake of cartoon humor. Remember, these were the times when Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes and Tex Avery characters were stuffing dynamite down their pants, and blasting shotguns in each others faces. This is what humor was before things got regulated for the most part during the 70s, and definitely the 80s. I'd go as far as to say it's shocking to viewers of today because of how PC everything is. But back then it must of been another Tuesday.
@Valtieldan

The fact people feel the need to defend Jim at all is disconcerting. Dark humour like this has always been a common thing with puppets and animation in general. 10:40 Not to be that person, but that one did not make sense from the perspective of promoting the product. I could see if he said "no" then bit him, but he said he would like to take a bite. I thought the theme of these would be that not wanting to try the product is a negative and met with consequences, but the individual was punished for accepting a bite of the product. Also, it could be taken as the product is so bad that someone would jump to take a bite out of someone else rather than simply finishing the food.

The Muppets: The Dark Side. The one where Kermit gets bitten, tickled me. All of them were funny as hell. You KNOW these kinds of commercials would NOT AIR in The 21st Century. Reminds me of Looney Tunes.

In the early episodes of the muppet show there are a lot of monster jokes where they eat other muppets and I think the “you want a bite?” was supposed to be an appealing joke because he assumes that means a bite of the bread but the other guy meant a bite of him. The others, those ARE dark and you had great points but that type of commercial with the bite was just his muppet eat muppet humor. There’s a lot of that.

If you made The Muppet Movie today, a third of the country would boycott Kermit for telling his nephew not to stand for the patriotic part. 😆

The first muppets special was called " Sex and Violence" and it in the dvd box set of the Muppet show. Jim Henson didn't want to do things for kids, but it just happen. If you are a Jim Henson fan and didn't know of these, then you are not really a true fan. lol The muppets were on SNL first season and that is a ACID trip.

It is quite surprising Korey that you never put on the two Wilkins coffee commercial where the victim gets gutted and stabbed. Forget the rest of the puppet commercials you have shown. THAT was the darkest of the puppet commercials, as it had knife violence and even a bit of blood. It actually made me drop my jaw when I saw that as that is the DARKEST of the bunch.

that last one for toys where they threaten to "break both your arms" is ESPECIALLY horrific when you remember that kids below a certain age group haven't developed critical thinking skills and therefore take what they're told as absolute fact.

The earliest episodes of Sesame Street had such things as violent Muppets, flirtations with Satanism, (skits with witches) hippies, (Little Jerry and the Monotones) the early version of Telly with the drugged out eyes, and the Count's filthy castle with cobwebs throughout.

It kind of indicates how our thinking has progressed over the years. If you've ever read a Mother Goose book with a 1930's copyright, those are quite brutal. They've been softened over and over in the following years until what we have now is just meh.
