Tim Burton might be known for not having many African Americans in his films, but the reason he dropped out of Batman Forever was that he did cast an African American as Robin and the studio didn’t want an African American playing Robin since he was Caucasian in the comics. The African American actor that he cast as Dick Grayson/Robin was Marlon Wayans. Actually he had a great cast and a darker story lined up for Batman Forever, and Warner Bros. screwed it up for everyone. The cast was supposed to be Michael Keaton as Batman, Marlon Wayans as Robin, Robin Williams as The Riddler, and Billy Dee Williams reprising his role as Harvey Dent from the first two films and officially becoming Two-Face. I would have loved to seen that version of Batman Forever instead of the version that we got.

That wasn’t *the reason* Burton left, Marlon was cast for Returns and was still paid while being removed from the script, but Burton was essentially quietly fired because Returns was criticized for being to dark at the time and it affected the merchandising. But he did indeed want a black Robin and a black Two-Face, both completely disregarded with Burton’s departure

It really wouldn’t make sense to blame the studio when they okayed the race swap for Harvey Dent. The real reason he left was because he was fired due to the complaints by McDonald’s who had merchandise tie-ins with Batman Returns but had difficulty moving products claiming the film wasn’t family friendly enough.

The story in the OG Beetlejuice was pretty basic and thin. It was the imagination of the world that Burton created that makes it such a magical masterpiece. I get with a sequel maybe expectations might be higher because it's a part 2 but realistically Beetlejuice was never about a great story. The original Beetlejuice is loved today but at the time it was released it got a mixed critical reception. The critical reviews while overall positive for the sequel aren't much different from the first. A lot of the critic reviews for the original when it came out were complaints about style over substance. Burton has actually always been style over substance his movies are so loved by a cult fan base because of his style. Most of his stories in his films have always been thin.

It’s literally what happened in the video. If you’re new to the story it’s impressive to you. This will be in nostalgic for kids growing up today. Corey is nostalgic about the first one and can’t see why anyone would change or try to update something. He loved and doesn’t notice that it was always the way it is now it never had a story that was that deep. People have such a reverence for the past these days and forget that kids growing up now have a reverence for the movies. They watched now for some kids for example, the lion King remake will be there nostalgic movie if you try to show them the old school animation it looks kind of too old for them, we can’t just stop making movies and we can’t just make every single movie new since we’ve run out of ideas anyway only so many ideas and you make people cry that they get or there’s too much exposition to get across what the story is because it’s too new and you don’t know or are not familiar with the tropes people and explain themselves and their made sense so I’m not really talking about them with the last part I said

@@nichescenes I think it's like that with most people with what they grow or grew up with. But also at the time Burtons style was fresh and not seen before so I think for them they feel it's played out for them. I think there asking more from Burton now then what they would have when his first few flicks came out if you go back and watch the first Beetlejuice and Pee Wee Big Adventure there was never a great or deep story in either film. Both films had good basic stories and what made them better was Burtons style and the worlds he created for them to take place in. Tim Burton has never been an amazing story teller he's always been fun over substance and that's fine but it won't be for everyone. If you go back and watch his Batman 1989 film the story is not some intricate or great study on Batmans character as a hero. It's a fun superhero comic fantasy with Jack as the Joker bouncing off the walls.

People are exaggerating a bit when they say there aren't any black people in Tim's movies; between them and Billy Dee in Batman '89 there's, as memory serves, the sheriff from Edward Scissorhands, Michael Clarke Duncan in Planet of the Apes (even if it's sadly as an ape), The candy store owner in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the one who Charlie gets the ticket from), Samuel L. Jackson in Miss Peregrine, the strongman in Dumbo as well as the two main kids who are half black, and the mean girl, one of the male bullies, and that bullies Dad in Wednesday. Besides those examples, and the odd extra here and there, it's not much though (and again one of them is playing a literal ape. Also kinda weird how a lot of these examples are antagonists).

I'm not sure Korey and Martin have enjoyed much of Burtons stuff. There normally part of the camp that sees him as style over substance. The original Beetlejuice is loved today but upon release it got mixed critical reception with some critics calling it style over substance just like there doing with this sequel. With that said Beetlejuice 2 has about the same critical score as the first on Rotten Tomatoes both films are rated by critics around the exact same scores and nearly similar reactions from critics with some saying it was fun while others accusing it of style over substance it's the same type of reactions the OG got. Both movies got have overall positive critical receptions though. The audience score for both films are also high. The OG Beetlejuice had a basic story itself it was Burtons imagination that made the movie work and how interesting the world he created was.

@@boomstickcritique902To add to your point. Martin & Korey both praised Burton for his films that they enjoyed. Example “Beetlejuice 1” and “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure”. I think their opinions similar to mainstream critics is when his films lack story and focuses more on aesthetics and visuals. I do think Burton is a great director but he’s had a lot of misses for sure. His films are more popular with audiences because of the goth aesthetic being super popular in film at a certain point. However, in recent years even audiences have disliked a lot of Burton’s more recent projects. Also with him not wanting to cast black people in his films has made him unpopular with Gen-Z with the exception of Wednesday where Netflix forced production to cast a Latina and to have a diverse cast because originally Tim wanted an all white cast. Burton is one of my favorite directors but I do think he focuses more on aesthetics than story. He reminds me of director Sam Levinson who created “Euphoria” & “The Idol” where critics based Euphoria’s second season and Levinson’s other projects for focusing more on aesthetics and visuals than good storytelling. To a point where his newer work has flopped and to go back to Burton even his recent films have flopped financially as well. I think we live in a time where storytelling isn’t important to many film fans anymore because people fall in love with aesthetics and visuals. I think this explains a lot with film critics being harsh on certain projects because storytelling isn’t as important to many audiences nowadays. Sometimes all you need is a good visual, an attractive person, a big name, etc. it’s very complex. Sorry to ramble on but hopefully I’ve made my points clear.

@@stevenrobinsonmovies There praise of Big Adventure and the first Beetlejuice I think is more do to when those films came out. When those 2 came out Burton was new at the time and his style was fresh. If you go back and watch those 2 movies the stories are just as thin and basic as most of Burtons movies in general. I think it's simply the fact given he only had 2 flicks out at the time his style was more fresh for them and felt more new. But Burton in general has never been a strong story teller his movies have always centered more around the gothic fantasy and or just fantastical worlds that he creates. I think it's simply a case that they ask more from Burton now then they did then because he's made many movies at this point so his style doesn't feel as unique to them or as fresh because he simply has more movies with that exact same style at this point.

@@stevenrobinsonmovies As far as Burton not wanting to cast black people I honestly don't think anyone in Gen Z cares or even legit thinks about it to be honest. Burton makes gothic themed fantasy flicks most of the time so inherently he's going to mostly cast pale white looking actors mostly. I really don't think anyone cares if Burton casts a black actor just for the sake of having a black actor in his movie and if they do care I really only think it's a very small section of people in general.

I agree the movie had a lot coming out of nowhere. However, I'd like to weigh in on the Beetlejuice's job. In the first movie, the dead couple attempted to hire Beetlejuice to scare away the new owners. Beetlejuice is doing the exact same job in the sequel. You can tell my the background voices on the phone asking him why he hasn't finished getting rid of someone the customer paid to be haunted. The pest control flyer Jenna Ortega's character found pointed to his job as well.

They should have done a story where after Lydia went to College Charles had exorcised Adam and Barbara sending them to the lost souls room. Lydia has been mad at him for 30 years and become a medium to try to find them but all ghosts won’t help her because of the problems the Maitlands created in the first movie letting Otto take the book. So the movie plays the same, Charles dies and story goes the same. Lydia desperate to find Adam and Barbaba now that her dad if gone. Astrid has the strained relationship with Lydia because she has spent her whole life talking about these people (Maitlands) and she’s over it. Astrid still meets the boy that is dead and when she discovers he is dead she finds his book. He breaks the rules and lets her have it and Astrid discovers that in the book you can do a spell in the afterlife on Halloween where you can release the spirits in the lost souls room with a spell that swaps other souls in their place. Movie plays the same but this time Delores tells Beetlejuice that he must marry her immediately or she will suck all the souls including his and Lydia, etc. as Delores is about to take Mary Beetlejuice, Astrid could have read the spell pretending she is marrying them and the spell puts Delores and all the souls she sucked into the lost souls room and that releases Barbara and Adam. They could have done where they are in bright light and pure energy and they must get in the soul train quickly to go to the afterlife. They could have had a scene where several ghosts in the room are reunited with their loved ones and it could have been emotional. We get to say goodbye to Adam, Barbara, Charles and Delia. This fixes Astrid and Lydia’s relationship leading to a satisfying ending.

I really enjoyed it but it felt rushed to me. Too many stories/characters are wrapped up without much development. I wonder if there is an extended cut somewhere with some of those elements fleshed out. Still, it was brilliant to see Keaton back as Beetlejuice and Catherine O'Hara was great as always.

If I abstract myself from the fact that it is 30 years late and the actors look so much older I think this is a half decent sequel that I would have consider acceptable back in the day, like Ghostbusters 2, but a little worse. At least it is more a sequel than a reboot/requel and the only scene that really fails at doing the same thing is the long musical number at the end. The big problem of the movie is there are too many stories and everything involving Beetlejuice's problems in the afterlife, with Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and even the Bobs characters, have no relation at all with the story of Lydia and her family. But ultimately the three women in the Deetz family is what kind of saves of the movie. I thought they were likable and , in the case of Catherine O'Hara, she was probably funnier than even Beetlejuice. I personally think they should have cut all the Monicca Bellucci and Willem Dafoe stuff, not because it was bad, but because it is irrelevant in this story. That way they could have made room for the other elements. Sometimes the movie feels extremely fast paced and it detracts me for enjoying the best parts, like the flashback about Jeffrey Jones character.

The first movie did not come out in 1986 it came out in 1988. Based on Korey's birthday he is right on how he was 16 when Beetlejuice came out in April 1988, but a lot of people mistaken Beetlejuice as an early 90's movie, Korey is the first person who thought the movie is older then it actually is and he actually seen it when it first came out, he is like that girl from youtube who thought Home Alone 2 came out in 2002. And he already forgot who Jenna Ortega is?? The irony is Kory is saying the sequel seems like it lacks or not being prepared before filming, but that is what Korey is like in every video where it somehow is hard for him to do simple basic internet research before he talks about a topic.

Fun movie but the payoff with BJ's ex-wife was the worst. Like seriously, that's it? It's like they just filmed scenes with Monica Belucci being intimidating and forgot that they had to write any closure to her. I liked how they worked around keeping the Charlie Deetz character though without needing to recast a sex offender. It was impressive they didn't just kill him off and that's it.

On the subject of the lack of diversity in Tim Burton films, I've noticed that when it was pointed out a little while ago. (I'm actually tired of seeing the same actors in his movies all the time) Anyway, I do have one notable character in one of his films that always stood out to me. The police officer in Edward Scissor hands. That character was the only one in the film truly lucid to Edwards situation. I'm trying to think if there were any other non-Caucasian actors at all in that film. I might not have much room to say this, as a white person, but it makes me think it puts emphasis as an empathetic outsider on the officer. This most likely was not done intentionally by Tim Burton. However, learning about his casting, and about the themes in that movie, I personally think it connected his empathetic tone towards Edward. While everyone else is in selfish lala land.

This sequel has been in development hell since the early 90’s. Willing to bet much of its problems are a direct result of that. As the story and premise changed (at one point this was to be set in Hawaii), all these disparate ideas, which should’ve been cut, were kept. Yet, there was no overlying reason for them to be present. So the movie’s like a buffet table of half realized concepts that are all vying for the spotlight. Like Martin said, the worst part of this is that it doesn’t feel necessary.

In defense of Beetlejuice in regards to him wanting to marry Lydia in the first movie it isn't really implied that he lusts after her like he does with the other women he harasses. The marriage is more about getting him unrestricted access to the living world. Still really scummy to marry a teenager even for that reason, of course.

You guys are right how the film feels like there’s too much. When I watched it last night, I enjoyed it. I thought it was funny and it was entertaining, but I did felt there was a little bit too much to it or at least comedy wise for example Lydia‘s mother, she plays the struggling artist and she is a funny character in the last film. But in the latest movie she was being to much. The movie was a mix bag of everything. I did love the parts where Beetlejuice explains his backstory in an Italian film. To me that says Beetlejuice. But what didn’t like about it felt early plus only told it to his co worker. Also, when I got home I thought over the soul train scene. I think there’s an inside joke saying disco dead. That hit me hard laughing. All in all it is definitely worth watching. I am hoping a third one is gonna be in the works, but I have heard they were going to make a third film after they announce the sequel.

Even aside from the repeat jokes from the first film, there should have been more development or focus on one or fewer storylines like you said. I also wonder if, at first, William Dafoe's character was meant to be similar to that of Sylvia Sidney's character Juno from the first one. She was so cool and disturbing at the same time as she smoked and it billowing out of the slit in her neck. I just didnt get that feel from this one. While there were interesting and creepy elements in this one, it just didnt have the heart, and cohesiveness, as you mentioned.
