I would say that the grinder is in bad need of having a wheel dresser used on the grinding wheels, from the sounds of it the wheels are out of balance and is causing a lot of vibration, also the grinding wheel has a warp to it that is causing it to wobble side to side, a potential safety hazard as it could cause the wheel to possibly crack and shatter and then throwing it out towards the user at enough force to cause harm.

I use a good file it takes longer so what I enjoy doing it that may sound crazy like a knife sharpen relaxing, I do have a grinder. With the file it less likely to whack it wrong real quickly .I like work gloves working with a grinder I have caught it on a grinder bloody mess.

I feel like I can competently sharpen a blade now. I liked the step by step presentation on the process. I thought the screw driver in the vise was a little bit of genius for balancing. Very practical advice at the end. The blade doesn't have to be pretty to work.

Good video. I've used a mini grinder to sharpen my blades for many years. It's worked well for me because I always balance the blade using the simple cone balancer. Never any engine bearing or seal problems. Think I'll go with your system now though...more accurate, safer, and easier. Thanks.

I think the angle grinder with a sanding disc is a good option. But, if you are using a bench grinder, they make wheels that grind cooler. They are pink and blue, I think. You are less likely to overheat and soften the metal with them. Thanks for the video.

Overheating doesn't embrittle the blade - it softens it. The overheated area will not hold an edge and will dull more quickly. Discoloration of the ground area to straw or blue is an indication of the amount of "drawing" the material has undergone. If the visible surface of the blade has turned blue, the very edge has been heated to red or white hot, completely annealing that region and rendering it soft. This is why knives are sharpened under a curtain of water to keep them cool.

You saved the best advice for the end, it will cut much better even if it isn't pretty. I discovered this in hand sharpening wood saws with a file. Then, after you've done it awhile, it gets a lot prettier. One thing though, I like to make really light passes, and I try really hard to do exactly the same pass on both sides, right at the same time. Thanks for a nice video.

Thanks for the video and your time. Different strokes for different folks. Ever notice how long the blade that came with your new mower keeps its edge? It's because they - the blade manufacture takes the time not only to sharpen it right but in doing so there are no grinding marks in the blade. Plus grinding a blade it's important to keep a roughly 45 degree edge all a long the sharp edge not a rounded uneven 45 degree edge. A lawn mower blade should never be sharpened or end up with an edge like a knife. A lawn mower blade should only be sharpened on one side or you end up with a feathered edge like a sharpe knife also. It is not only the edge that gives a clean cut but the whole 45 degree angled edge but starting with its sharp edge first of course. I sharpen all 9 of my blades with the dullest beat up wood file I have. It only takes me roughly 45 minutes to put a nice edge on it edge of a blade. Once I am done filling I take a sanding block with 300 grit paper to finish even up the file. Than I use a Dremel tool with a 1/2" dia. disk to polish it further. Let's not forget to remove all of the old dried grass and dirt off the blade also or you will never balance it. After approximately 12 hours I have all of my blades looking like knew. Like I said different strokes for different folks and if you believe all of this crap I will bring all of my blades to your house and you can sharpen them your way LOL just some humor it's so nice to see people not arguing - what a breath of fresh air. Thank You All

I have to say that a bench grinder would be one of the last options I'd use to sharpen a blade. Granted it can be done if one paid a good bit of attention. The best method I've found and is widely used is a flap sander wheel on angle grinder.

If your grinding wheel wobbles like that trash it. Craftsman makes crap(sman). It's also better to use a guide (jig) to set the angle rather than trying to freehand it. Yes - it's just a lawnmower blade but you can remove a consistent amount of metal from both sides with just a few passes using a guide.

don't bother, the factory length is the only affective area. that portion of the blade is the only part traveling fast enough to cut grass, as you move towards the center, the rotational velocity decreases too much.

For one thing, mower blades are actually not supposed to be razor-sharp. This is something few seem to understand. Honda Service manuals actually say to get it sharp and then create a tiny flat (square) at the edge. Mower blades that are truly sharp will round over within a couple of mowings or less.

1. You need to replace that out of round grinding wheel. It is dangerous in the condition it is. That is why your grinder is shaking so much. It could explode at any moment! 2. You should actually invest in a pair of clear safety glasses so you can see better. 3. You should adjust the tool rest on your grinder. It is unsafe to hold the blade in the manner shown. The blade should be laying flat on the tool rest. 4. You can purchase a cheap blade balancer (about 2.00) that actually will balance your blade. The method you are using is a waste of time. I usually don't comment, however I hope I can caution anyone watching your video to NOT sharpen their blade like you are teaching. It is an accident waiting to happen.

Not just for sharpening a blade, but for any other grinding operation. The tool to dress the wheel is not expensive. Try Harbor Freight. They should have one. It is called a "Wheel Dresser". Item no. 1682. Cost - $4.49.

Its safer for the user and the blade to put the blade in a table vice and use an angle grinder. This works, yes, but its not the easiest way. Using an angle grinder lets you see the side your grinding and make smooth even passes. This helps you know if your burning it and if you know what your doing you can keep a perfect balance every time.

@johnculpepper3748 9 жыл бұрын
First, his grinder is out of balance, it needs balancing FIRST. Flattening a really 'nicked' cutting edge is correct, I would NEVER grind the flat side of the blade to remove burs, the natural wear of the blade when cutting the grass will remove them. You really have to be abusive on a grinder to burn the metal, so go slow, just remove small amounts of metal at a time, and try to maintain the factory angle. Be sure to balance the blade before reinstalling on the mower. NOTE; a mower should run at a fairly high RPM so the blade will 'lift' the grass blade so the mower blade can cut it, most people run the rpm slow to conserve gas, higher rpm is better.

A small angle head grinder (used with care) will do an excellent job. The problem with a bench grinder is overheating the cutting edge, the blade will dull very fast because you have annealed the edge. I use a bench belt sander to sharpen my blades, they stay reasonably cool and you get a very sharp, uniform, professional looking edge.
