How to sharpen lawn mower blades with a bench grinder

I had to replace some lawn mower blades on my mowers, so I decided to throw together this video of how I sharpen lawn mower blades. My blades get hacked up from people running over rocks , stumps, and misc. objects laying around. 90 percent of the time you can save the blades, but they are going to have rough edges from the blows. I show you how to remove the rough edges and sharpen the blade sharp enough to cut the Thanksgiving Turkey.
This isn't the best method but not the worst one either. It gets the job done fast and efficiently. The safety part is up to you, this is how i do it. I do it this way because I m to cheap to buy a lawn mower blade sharpener. I did leave out in this video on how to balance the blades, I will remake this video with that section in it, and I will try to make it a little less boring. Thanks For Watching. You can sharpen the blade all you want but if you lose the angle even just a bit you won't get a proper cut. Tip from my husband a retired lawn specialist.

you should take a fine file to take off the bur from the grinder lay it flat with the bottom and then make passes. you lose ALOT of cutting edge when you take it back to the grinder just to remove small filings.

at what point do u suggest just replacing the blade, i got a grinder but my blade is in pretty bad shape, gotta be more careful about rocks and the like when i mow.

That's a judgment call on your part. I cut them about 3 - 5 times before I discard them. But the blades I use are 1/4 inch thick. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Andy P depends if you are cutting alot or just your house. the geometry of your mower blades will determine how long they last. longer the better. if the edge is rounded but comes to a sharp point that's still not good the whole edge needs to be flat at a 35 to 45 degree angle. you shouldnt go lower because you want some meat to stay with the blade . 35 is recommended if you are cutting nice clean lawns no sticks or debris that can ware the blade down faster.

On the final sharpening pass it should be 1 second for each inch of length of blade…8” blade should take 8 seconds from tip to butt….just like a knife

2:57 “Needless to say that is the last time this blade is gonna be used.” Are you serious? What’s wrong with it that you won’t be using it again? I replace my blades roughly every 3,000 cuts, which is about 150 sharpens. There is far less metal on mine when I get rid of them. Those blades look like they were sharpened maybe 2-3 times. Needless to say, I’m stunned.

The quality of the cut is more important to me then the quantity of cuts from 1 set of $30 blades.

Handy Man If I replaced $30 blades every 3 sharpens I’d be spending $4,500 annually on one mower’s blades. I imagine most companies do what I do, because that is a huge waste of money otherwise. Nevertheless, you do you.

I really don’t understand where you come up with $4500 annually. You can get a lot of cuts with 3 sharpens. Unless you are hitting a lot of stuff , dulling the blades in the process. Also if you are sharpening your blades once a week, then yeah it could be expensive. You have to be careful. But you are absolutely correct. You do you

Wrong. Never put on gloves when using a grinder as the gloves can get caught in the grinder
