At 51 I listen to my body mostly when picking workout days and intensity. I feel good, I'm gonna hit it hard squeezing out every rep and running the rack. If I don't feel so hot then I lower the intensity. There's no shame in taking an extra day off and maybe go for a walk or do some yoga. I also have Doug's book. His bio-mechanic spin on training is amazing and I wish I had this knowledge when I was in my 20's

I am glad Ric mentioned the availability and proximity of equipment for super sets. A LOT of the time when I was working out in a busy commercial gym I had to wait just to be able to use ONE piece of equipment, much less being able to get use of two in alternating fashion.

Good video. I have always trained a muscle group once a week for the last 25 years. The quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves on the first day. The upper body in two days with a push muscles day(chest, shoulders, and triceps) on the week's second day. The third day is for the pull muscles (back, traps, and biceps). I train the abs on the first or first day.

I do legs and pull-ups on day 1. Rest on day 2. Upper body on day 3. Rest on day 4. Neck, traps, shoulders, arms, and calves on day 5. Rest on day 6. And I do legs and pull-ups again on day 7. As long as my central nervous system is recovered, my muscles work hard! I punish my muscles. It's amazing how your muscles just respond and adjust to your workout. I take lots of leucine, glutamine, lysine, and tyrosine as well. Rest days are for eating and napping! Thankfully my schedule allows for me to be able to train like this. 3 months from now I'm gonna take about 2 weeks off and then get back at it.

Thanks Ric Doug is great as always. I Have recently been focusing on high reps 40 down to about 10, after just going heavy 6-8 for 20 years. After hearing Doug. Greater pump, more muscular, definition, and strength, and muscle connection is very important as I age. Highly recommend.

Mon- half body, Tuesday other half-high reps and 3 sets per bodypart, Wed Thurs, half body, medium reps (10-12).....Fri Sat, half body each day-6-8 reps heavy, 6 days, each body part is worked 3 times a week, but only 3 sets exh and with a different rep range each time, and high intensity, based On Leo Costa's Serious Growth program.....got great results from it though it's good to change to less frequency again for a while after about 6 weeks on it......no magic routine or formula, best way is to mix it up and use variety.

Something about gym use- Ric mentions the alternating male and female days. A couple of gyms I trained in had to start encouraging (don't thnk they ever made actual restrictions) the big powerlifters to train together at certain times of day, etc. They would have a half dozen bars loaded up to 400-700 lbs., so no one of average size could "work in" with them- way too much unloading plates. OTOH- there would be some bodybuilder doing curls with 100 in a power cage, or 100 lb. presses on a Smith Machine, so it sort of went both ways. Related- a lot of the gyms I went to did not even allow weightlifters, no wonder the U.S. has not been competitive in decades.

I myself work out with only bodyweight exercises. I workout sissy squats (one set 20 reps), then close stance pushups (one set, 20 reps). Then I rest for nine days. Then I workout with Superman lat pulldowns (one set, 20 reps), then situps (one set, 20 reps). Then rest for nine days. I also have a good breakfast, lunch, dinner and I make great progress. I gave up heavy volume training because I never made spectacular results. I also listen to binural beats to help with muscle growth (the safe steroid alternative). I read where at 51 it's very hard to build muscle but many times I see that I have made the best gains ever!

On why current bodybuilders all look alike: Too much muscle. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. If you look at there silhouette (as in Frank Zane) they just look like obese people. I blame the establishment for rewarding horrible looking physiques and really ruining bodybuilding. I stayed away for 2.5 decades because of how distasteful it had became. Luckily at 48 (now) I am back on track and it feels wonderful.

Not sore muscle = you can train. I have frequently 5 days muscle pain and that s why i train some muscles every 6 - 7 days. Interesting thing: if you don t train 1 month or more, you will use lighter weight because you lose strength - and you will grow without hurting the joints. For example you do biceps with 15 kg dumbbells, somewhere around 8 reps per set- but after 2 months of no training you can only use 12 kg dumbbells for 6- 7 reps. That' s great ! For the muscle, the 12 kg is heavy now. You will grow. Forget about power.

I've had double knee replacements surgery 3+ years ago and was told ONLY to use a stationary bicycle 😫 I asked my surgeon "Who stole my quadriceps during surgery ?" since postoperative bedrest allowed a shocking amount of atrophy. I think different exercises warrant different rep ranges. So triceps extensions high reps works very well. So does Hammer Strength equipment for most movements. On free weights barbell I'd say lower is better and safer.
@joesantus1663
@joesantus1663 7 жыл бұрын
Genetics vary such that, a person may have significant differences in variables such as muscle-fiber-type-predominance and testosterone-receptor quantities among their own body's muscles. For example, a person may have tricep genes which respond better to higher reps yet quad genes which respond better to lower reps. Yet, another person may have tricep genes which respond better to lower reps and quads which are stimulated better by higher reps. Regrettably, there is no simplistic formula that can be used in advance for optimizing each person's body and its genetics. The best can be done is for a person to begin with a system which has worked at least well enough for many others, and from that point, use trial-and-error and personal experience to discover what works best for themself. That's why it's usually more helpful to say, "Such-and-such a rep range, or frequency, or exercise, or program, works very well FOR ME, and might or might not work as well for you."

Ralph Kroger, who was on the cover of Iron Man a couple of times with his great physique, used to train ALL body parts 7 days a week. Did it for years and looked great. It probably WAS overtraining, but is proof that not every one is the same. Kroger only used very minimal supplements because he could not afford them, so there was no magic supplementation program either.

I would never go to a gym that 1) doesn't have any barbells and 2) the dumbbells only go up to 85 lbs. I only go to gyms that allow me to do heavy powerlifting training: barbell squats, barbell bench press, barbell deadlifts, barbell shoulder presses, bands, chains, etc.

Anyone who's a drug free lifter should be on a 2 or 3 day program, hitting each muscle group twice a week. Whether it be a push/pull/legs or delts+arms/back+chest/legs or just a upper body then lower body split. These guys nowadays taking a full day for arms, then a full day for chest, then they'll hit hamstrings one day and quads the next are juiced to the gills....they can afford to they are going to grow either way. The reason why the average gym physique nowadays isn't near as well rounded nor aesthetic is because guys are spending too much time trying to isolate muscles that really should be developed in heavy barbell compound movements like behind the neck presses, upright rows, bent over rows, shrugs, power cleans, barbell bench press & squat as well as the deadlift. It's that foundation that is lost.

Pretty sure that is Serge Jacobs from Belgium. Used to be called SJ, probably to keep his name and that of Serge Nubret from ever being confused (I know, NO similarity between them, but in conversation if someone says Serge this or Serge that, whatever), he competed up until the late 1970s, mainly in Europe. Won about everything in Belgium a time or two, but had only modest success in the bigger events. He was probably training in California at the time of that photo in preparation for the NABBA Universe. Where he is today I have no idea. Probably in Brussels or Ghent eating waffles.

@davepazz580
@davepazz580 4 жыл бұрын
But keep in mind gymnasts aren't really training for muscle growth... they are training to condition their bodies for the sport and the competition. Which means that while they do work those muscles every day, the intensity isn't high. When bodybuilding programs are laid out, they don't try to advocate more training time than necessary because they assume you don't have hours per day all 7 days to devote to training.
