I have witnessed so many people keep small fry... it is quite pathetic. "They are good for soup lol" This attitude is why fishing holes are all out of fish. A park ranger I was speaking with told me that someone had over fished 53 undersized variey of fish. Guy had his gear and his vehicle confiscated.

Always loved doug hannon the best of all fishing personalities for his scientific educated and articulate way of explaining things. The man was a genius. Rest in peace bass professor doug hannon.

Doug Hannon is one of my hero's. I loved watching his TV shows and tapes. I started to get really serious about bass fishing when I was 16. That was back in 1978 and this is one of the guys I followed. Read his articles and watched his shows. Its really great to watch these old tapes again. The lessons never get old or outdated. What caught bass back then still holds true today. He died way too young at 66. RIP.

I remember when Doug came to my town in the early 80's to teach a class on Bass. My mom had bought a ticket for me and my brother under a pavilion in our local park and included was a copy of his book for each of us. It really opened up our fascination with the science involved, being in nature, observing all wildlife while on the water, and catch-n-release. Mom couldn't understand how we caught bass but didn't bring them home to clean & eat. This world overlooks the importance of a parent that looks for their kid's interests and cares enough to give them opportunities like that. I am not a great tournament fisherman by today's standards because I tell others how I caught them, where I caught them, how I arrived at my decisions & patterns. I love the instruction side of Bass fishing.

I caught nice 5 pounder out of my lake last week and a friend of mine caught a 6.7 around the same spot on the lake we had a scale and both fish went back in! Definitely good 🧬 genetics but it’s a private lake and it’s not over fished I just take pics and send em back in!! Let them keep growing

I used to watch & enjoy Doug Hannon bass fishing. But some of the points being made in this video are highly debatable. The #1 trophy bass fishing guide here on the Stick Marsh in central Florida, was the late Hugh Crumpler. One day, Hugh had 2 clients in his boat, when one of them caught a 12 lb bass. Less than a half hour later, they caught the exact same fish again, in the same general area. Also, I've caught many bass, including several trophy fish that either had clear signs of hook wounds in their mouths, or a hook or lure still lodged in it's mouth, where the fish obviously broke the line. My theory is this: Some bass behave differently or have different temperaments than other bass. Some bass are MUCH smarter than others. Some giant bass are virtually un-catchable.

I fish out of Glades, but you're right. In Hannon's later years he revised some of the items in this. Towards his last few years, he said he was spending more time diving and studying than fishing. Sadly, a lot of his research died with him. Every species has its Einstein, and every species has their idiots.

I would disagree that Doug knew more about largemouth bass than anybody. That title would easily go to Buck Perry. In fact Buck knew more about just about any freshwater gamefish than anybody. That being said I loved listening to Doug.

I wonder if Doug hannon was a Star Trek fan? His cold mechanical mannerisms and his tendency to discourage anthropomorphizing bass and distancing his techniques from emotional attachment remind me of a Vulcan. Like if there ever were real Vulcans visiting here on earth, Doug would probably be one of them…although I guess if you were an alien it wouldn’t be wise to make a bass fishing video…

Not so sure he is correct about the lack of directionality in the hearing of fish. Maybe a binary system between hearing and lateral? Find it hard to rationalize the idea that an animal that evolved in water doesn't have the tools necessary to feed itself.
