Saw Doug in 2009 in Albany, NY. Junior Stopka opened for him in what I could only describe as an overcrowded, standing room only, floor, and a stage. Junior was great but some kid in his twenties heckled him the whole time. Doug got on stage and said he wasn't telling a single joke till that dude left. He wouldn't leave. The entire crowed near rioted chanting in unison to get the f*ck out. Kid finally was pushed out but not before hurling a brick through the glass door. What followed was an hour of the best comedy I've seen to date. Doug Stanhope is king.

One of my favorite jokes was the bar below having a punk band play and you could hear it through most of the set. Doug's commentary on it was "hey, turn the music up. We can hear the comedian down here!"

The saddest thing of all, I feel, is that Doug won’t truly be appreciated for his work during his lifetime. He’s made me think more than Bill Hicks, or Carlin, or Pryor, or Bruce, and yet he’s a road comic to his soul. They get the least notoriety but the most full lives of nearly anyone in that business because they confront the mundane overlooked minutia in life and find the beauty in it or else it will kill them. And they have to do it over and over again. Every day. Most human beings are not cut out for that kind of abuse. However much darkness they believe they can handle. His work should be interpreted as the philosophy of finding meaning in a meaningless world. Stanhope is important. Thank you Doug for your service.

From the killer termites, if you don’t like it move on. I don’t need to shove my opinion down your throat to make myself feel better. Love how kids today are so sheltered and safe guarded with no value of intellect, having a verbose message with no sentiment of maintaining any since of when this was recorded during an election year where literally every single person was talking and rioting over politics. CRINGE not knowing what’s going on in the world around me being self-indulgent and never having a perspective that will ever add any sapience to any conversation that you’re in. I was stable, but they said they just wanted to be sure. The thought of another 72 hours bedridden wore on me. I remembered I never watched this. So I did. I kept my door open and I turned this up LOUD. I laughed loud with it. Within 40 minutes the nurse came back and told me the DR approved my release. I haven't finished the special until today. @@israelmaldonado2928 100%. Hicks is better than any comedian that will ever live because of the circumstances and there's a reason(I'm not a huge fan of, but) Bo Burnham also kind of kills it. The key in my eyes was that he started so young. For Bill, he was done being a "beginner" comic at the same time he became a young adult. He was doing 300+ shows a year for probably more than a decade, something most people can't really put up in our 30's or 40's and beyond. By the time he was in his early 20's and realizing his own truths in the world, and dissenting, and kind of going through the whole rigamarole most of us go through in our professional careers(not wanting to just come home and watch TV, wanting to love our job, maybe not being the person we want to be, not having the time/energy to take care of ourselves -- overall, compromising in life), by this time, he already had long-established his stage presence, voice, and the a to b to c of jokewriting. I believe that because of that specific timing, and his ability to rehearse and rehearse and rehearse, he had one of the most legendary paths of any young-adult comic. He was able to take his spiritual awakening, and instead of breaking off a high school relationship, or settling and getting married, or going to college late, or joining the air force with no other career ambitions, or just whatever decisions lot of people(sometimes manically) do to change their lives in their 20's... he happened to not need to do that. Instead he just translated what his gut was reverberating, in a similar way as he soft-trolled the culture in his early days. His gut was rallying against his wakening reality, but he was an established comic, so it got translated into jokes instead of manic life changes. Most of us take these emotions and go docile, attempt to go practical, and/or turn these feelings, observations, or lessons into what we are going to teach our kids. There probably won't be anyone that ever comes close to scratching the surface of what Bill Hicks was trying to do. Dare I say he was an angel.

@@ziggygunz2447 Those are all greats. IMO Bill Hicks Sane Man is probably the best special of all time. It's a little dated, but there's just nothing like it. Lot of good jokes and stories out there these days, certainly great story tellers, roasters, writers, but no one put the whole act together like Bill -- the faces, sound effects, voices, different actions and impersonations he did on stage, and the pure rehearsal which allowed him to do these things so absolutely flawlessly. I don't think most Bill Hicks fans even realize a large part of the reason Bill was so good was not purely his jokes and topic material, but the delivery that combined all those aspects. It even took me years and watching and watching over and over again to realize it's all this extra stuff that made him so funny and entertaining on stage. Aside from using your voice+intellect, acting like a madman on stage is a forgotten art. Love Stanhope, but when was the last time you saw Doug Stanhope even so much as using his hands to act anything out?

Saw him live in Asheville in 2012. I laughed so hard my face hurt the next day. I’ve heard every album of his, not one bit from that show has turned up on any of them. Dude is fucking prolific with his bits. One of the hardest working comedians out there, and his lack of mainstream success like his contemporaries Bill Burr, or Patton Oswalt, speaks more to his Carlin-esque truth-to-power persona and the mainstream rejection of that sort of truth. He is a wonderful human being, and his act always brings out fundamental truths that we need to pay more attention to.

Fucking amazingly hilarious as always. The thing I’ve come to learn over the years with Stanhope is that he’s not the guy that keeps you laughing open-to-close but he keeps you 10x more interested and drawn in to what he’s going to say next than any of those kind of comics do and that’s because as immature (which I mean as a compliment) some of his material is, there’s always substance to it. It’s just a matter of finding it or as he said - how you interpret what you’re hearing. Thanks to the uploaded on this, good stuff.
