Doug Wilson Says God Will Raise Up a New “Standard Bearer?”

At a recent missions conference, Doug Wilson (seated next to Voddie Baucham and the Crosspolitic guys) gave an odd answer to a question that has a lot of folks scratching their heads.

If you want the context to try and make this seem less crazy, you’re out of luck but the context is linked in the description. It doesn’t change what he said. He’s saying there is some type of heroic figure coming that Christians will be able to rally behind. That’s not in Scripture folks. Jesus is the only prophesied Hero like that.

No supposed “standard bearer” can save us. Only Jesus can do that. What is he talking about. I need book, chapter and verse for this OTHER standard bearer. 🙄🙄

Hebrews 1:1-2 is a passage I used to reference when preaching the Gospel to Mormons because of their priesthood doctrines. Now, I believe it should be used to preach the Gospel to Theonomists, "biblical patriarchs," and anyone else that thinks God needs more "standard bearers." He doesn't, because of Jesus Christ. He is THE standard bearer. Period. Anyone that adds onto him is preaching another Gospel.

We do have a standard bearer and His name is Christ! Does Doug Wilson and the other theonomists not understand that Christ is the standard, and no person or society, no matter how "holy" they are, will ever reach the Holiness of Jesus? See, this is what happens when a person makes the focus of their "evangelism" on transforming culture and making laws morally comfortable for Christians that live in Republican areas (because that's literally the only reason Christian nationalism exists). They inevitably make the Gospel of personal salvation of faith alone in Christ alone secondary in favor of a gospel societal change, and thus, lose their saltiness. This is similar to what a lot of progressive christians do with their emphasis on social justice and their de-emphasis on sound doctrine.

This is right up there with Doug talking about a Christian prince when discussing Christendom 2.0. It's very odd. God was pretty clear that human monarchy is a very bad idea.

Thank you Dean. I am nauseated and disgusted at the self righteous fear mongering of Doug Wilson. I am very aware of manipulation tactics courtesy of some dysfunctional relationships 🥴. Also, from spiritual abusive churches but they were hyper charismatic. Doug wants to be the spiritual intellectual 🧐 fear monger. But NO. We’re canceling him!!!!

The “standard bearer” is possibly the Antichrist. This is part of his very strategy: prime people for a leader in every generation, and when the end does not happen, people scoff, and more go to hell. Matthew 24.

Only Jesus can save us, yes... But Jesus uses pitiful, sinful men ALL THE TIME to - as flimsily as we might - hold a standard and lead others/the church... Was it a sin for the early church to "rally behind" Paul? What about Athanasius when he defended the Trinity? Martin Luther? Calvin? None of these men were perfect, obviously, but it's not sinful to say God raises up men to lead, and that we should be prepared to follow Godly leadership when He makes it manifest.

Father rule, the Husband is the wife’s father, the Father is in charge of his daughter until she goes to the husband of his choice or at least his ultimate approval. It not that we don’t like it as much as it’s simply not biblical. We are called to lead people to Jesus Christ, not human authorities.

Dean, you are correct about Wilson, but you need to warn people about Piper as well. Piper teaches the same false Gospel. Don’t think that what Piper teaches is any better. I’m fact, Wilson tries to hide it where Piper does not.

@@theresaread72 With all do respect, because frankly in the comments section I think what I'm about to say, without the context of my tone of voice and honestly my being baffled by this might come across as hateful even though that is not my intent, what you just said is absurd sounding. Those things can be good things. I mean suppose I found the woman I have been praying for for years, and I desperately want to spend the rest of my days with her. assuming further that the MAN that has been doing what he is called to do (leading her to Christ/ministering to her in a Christ-like manner/showing how a husband is to love his wife and treat women etc by the way he treats her mother) speaking of her father of course, I should to some degree or another absolutely ask her fathers permission. Because suppose also that I am a total scumbag and bad for her, her father should most certainly have an opinion authoritative in nature in the prevention her putting herself into a relationship with a boy like me. Something like "honey I understand you like this boy, but his character is (insert bad qualities here). So the father as the HEAD of the house if he is being Biblical then he should be leading his family to Christ. It is not a case of Im a man you're a woman, I say something then you do something. I mean like Voddie Baucham said "It is not about value it is about order" And as disorderly as our world is a good bit of order especially in the Christian household would be impactful on the sexually promiscous culture around us. All of this 'its unbiblical' nonsense sounds more of an emotional response than expositional. Is some statements made hard to swallow? Sure. Could Doug or Voddie smuggle in a little more grace and mercy into their sermons? Certainly! But so can a lot of people. Sorry not sorry IMHO Male headship is most certainly the Biblical model.

Like saying something along the lines of "Well Trump is clearly a racist, Im not gonna give you any definitive proof, but I know that he is! I think so so it must be so"

Maybe unpacking more than a handful of Doug’s words will help. Otherwise you might accuse someone of Hersey or folly without properly grasping their position. Like accusing the apostle Peter of denying justification by faith alone because of his short statement “baptism now saves you through Christ.” Some things take a bit more leg work to properly grasp and critique.
