John MacArthur has gone too far this time, in a q/a pannel featuring Costi Hinn, MacArthur said "PTSD does not exist" and then went on to give some of thew worst counsel on mental health I've ever heard.

This was infuriating to watch. My wife has MS which physically changes the brain chemistry resulting in depression and anxiety. She is also ADD, and this almost destroyed our marriage before it was diagnosed. Once we realized her brain processed stimuli and information differently we were able to make changes to how we communicated. Now we celebrate our differences and take advantage of our unique strengths. JMac's perspective would have left us in despair and exhausted, and most likely divorced. I am grateful to God for supplying the Christian psychologists that helped us navigate these challenges. My counselor showed me the heart of God more than any sermon.

@fatalerror-dz2qy thou shall not kill in context, was talking about murder, not defending your nation against evil or evil ones against another, if that where the case how do you explain the children of Israel having an army and many times God blessed them in battle? Secondly, by your logic, no nation would ever have an army to defend itself, so if the Nazi party or people like Hitler rise up, no nation would have an army to defend against that right? So let the enemy come in and kill everyone and take over correct? That’s silly! Because evil is in this world there will always be bad people doing bad things in this world, so we need a Military to defend against it, that’s wisdom. Also, in that line of thinking, Christians can’t go to war but only the pagans can? So as long as unsaved people die but Christian’s don’t it’s ok? How selfish and unloving! There’s many holes in your logic. Lastly, even if what you say is true, and it’s not, but for the sake of argument, let’s say it is, you basically said, to heck with your suffering of whatever your going through, you get what you get so you deserve this! Wow, so how does that minister to people who are struggling? How does that minister to where they are and help them recover? So, I’ll make sure to not send people your way, thanks, blessings and I’ll pray for more of a loving heart for you ❤️

I could not will myself better and trying to lead to depression and anxiety. This hot take by JMac is not only unfair but highly dangerous. I'm so numb to this kind of thing because I essentially grew up with this. When I was in 3rd grade, I had a teacher who brought my parents in one day and told them, "I think Monoki has ADD (ADHD inattentive as it would later be named) and he should be put on Ritalin." I was promptly pulled out and homeschooled for a number of years after that suggestion. and pretty much was never taken in to get examined for any mental conditions. 13 years ago, after coming down with strep, I started getting panic attacks and some health anxiety centered struggles. And pretty much, after it was determined my struggles were mental, I was met with "oh youre just not trusting God enough." "anxiety is a sin" Parents are big Macarthur fans. Additionally, my parents had concerns about Autism because of some tics i had since the anxious breakdown. but again, never taken in or tested. 30 now. I'm looking into what it would take to get evaluated for ADHD/ASD. lot of concerns there for another time. But its one reason i don't bring the subject up much with my parents.

As a current PhD student or Psychology studying mental illness, this is very concerning and disheartening to hear. It's a reminder that we as Christians need to rely on our local church pastors for guidance, and not rely completely on the big names. Although this is an awful take from MacArthur, I can still respect all else that he has done in ministry and his excellent exposition of the scripture. Heck, I even have a MacArthur study bible. We don't need to condemn fellow believers for bad takes, rather, we should pray for them. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and don't take sides. We are ALL brothers and sisters of Christ who are fallen. Even the "greatest" of us are still fallen sinners.

I've had both for decades due to an abusive father. After I was saved, I begged the Lord to heal me, but I guess the answer was "No." I have thru Drs found medicine that makes it bearable. I think you’ve made a good point, Dean. A lot of this is probably born out of MacArthur’s isolation and ignorance. That isolation and ignorance has made him say dangerous things like this that are truly detrimental not only to individuals that are hurting and need support, but to the cause of Christ going forward. Who would want to be a part of this uncaring community? On that note, I asked this in the comments on your video about Jinger Duggar, but I’ll ask it again here: In all sincerity, what is the difference between Gothard and MacArthur? The more I learn about JMac, the less daylight I see between him and Bill Gothard. I could TOTALLY see Gothard saying this same kind of thing. It seems like Jinger just traded one ultra-legalistic dogma for another slightly different flavor of ultra/legalistic dogma.

I think Costi was given influence, and took it, too quickly, without slow and healthy discipleship (it seems, I obviously don't know the man). He does represent a kind of zeal that comes from a fresh awakening; its good that he rejected the prosperity gospel, but in a haste to be right we can so easily latch onto new error. And I think the fundie crowd were so glad to have someone with a public profile reject that false gospel, they propped him up and gave him way more responsibility than he likely should've had; and there in the acceptance of this group he accepted their law gospel. I say Costi, it really only appears that way; I could be wrong about him; but, all the same, he represents what many people go through: doctrinal whiplash that comes through a lack of relationship in orthodox theological spaces. He's the one who might've done better in this scenario, MacArthur is no surprise (albeit a terribly unhealthy take) Small rant over.

Take heart! Bunyan, Luther, Cowper and Spurgeon understood the reality of these afflictions. I do too. What I love from Bunyan is that he listed the ways God used his mental affliction to strengthen his dependence on God. Cling to this: "My grace is sufficient for you. My strength is made perfect in weakness."

Right, he is an unfeeling speaker not a pastor, more like a robot. His lifestyle reveals he is another form of prosperity preacher, secretly he is leading that kind of life. You feel frustrated sometimes listening to him.

Thank you very much for this comment! Exactly! 2 faces of the same coin, the same spirit in the 2 camps. They use different names but do the same things! Prosperity Gospel/NAR Dominion and Theonomy for example. Another one: "Touch not my anointed" is said out loud in the properity gospel camp, they do not say it in the reformed camp but they practice it more than them! Jmac must not be touched! he can never be wrong! he his the anointed of God, untouchable!

Ironically, he as a vocal cessationist is aligning himself with the prosperity preachers by taking this stance. Man, PTSD is real. I am better but it is a battle to heal and get to the other side. I do believe that God helps us to rebuild our foundation in him to heal from that. It takes work and time to do real, solid healing. My counseling experience has been very negative, but have done a lot of reading to help me understand what I am dealing with. Scripture has been a lot of help too.

Our family has multiple members with neurodivergence, which naturally comes with mental health components. The most harmful things said to our family about it have come from other Christians that love JMac and hold what he and others like him say on a pedestal. Many families suffer in silence or latch onto this kind of teaching and make things worse for their family in churches and church cultures where these teachings run rampant. It’s very sad to see the damage it does in real time.

I believe this is what they all have believed for a long time but were worried if they were super open about it they would loose a lot of their “backers.” However, with the rise of the acceptance & proliferation of conspiracy theories, they learned that there was a whole community & culture that would happily jump on board with them and now they have thrown all caution to the wind & just let it all fly out & are applauded for it.

Yes. I suffer from depression from time to time. Not always. I was told that I get depressed because I don’t have enough faith in God. I was told this by a supposed Christian. A few years ago a long time friend committed suicide. I was told by yet another so called Christian that I was grieving for too long. This is why I do t tell people in my church anything anymore. I keep it to myself. It shouldn’t be that way.

Although I disagree with his polarising take, I think it is true that labels and drugs are used to replace responsibility quite often. Not all cases obviously, but it's much easier to blame behaviour on a condition than to deal with the root causes. I think it's a case of "both- and", not "either-or".

It's wild to me that JMac is doing what so many 20 something TheoBros do while going through seminary. They read a book that either confirms what they already believe or gives them a little understanding on a subject and all the sudden everyone who disagrees is wrong.

I'm blessed to have a semblance of peace with my caretaker's ptsd without pills, but ignoring that mental illness is extreme forms of such things he mentioned (such as guilt) that cause physical and life issues, he's discounting Christ's amazing healing ability and the outer reaches of human brokenness.

My only suggestion is to read the Word of God for yourselves in this area; then you will have a much clear understanding of this issue of life, this falling world, brain vs mind, soul and body…according to the Perfect Wisdom of God vs imperfect human like me and us with limited knowledge and understanding. May the LORD bless you all! ❤

Well he'd say there's no such thing as abuse too.... Uggg. Absolutely shameful. I'm a trained counselor and this is SOOO harmful. I mean I DO think that doctors do over-medicate and counselors can be too quick to give labels, however mental illness, PTSD, etc. is absolutely real. Also, "If you parent them right they will make right choices".... ummmm no guarantee of that at all Sir! Uggg!!!!

This is also evidence that he doesn’t trust or even understand neuroscience and how our brains can literally be changed in the process of development because of trauma. He could have worded this so differently for example “ I believe there is a huge issue of overmedicating and not getting to the root of a persons issue” but to take such a strong stance is putting himself dangerously close to the “just have enough faith” camp
