You all know that most people that own something like a Lamborghini know what the hell a 959 is, right? It's a super rare supercar that's worth over a million dollars, it's not a secret what it is. They are pulling up going "holy shit that's a freaking 959" and half or more of them are going " I wish I could afford to buy that", because a $250,000 Huracan is a long way off from a million dollars or more. @Doug DeMuro Thanks Doug - excellent video!! A few points here: 1. The "Gelaende"-gear is not for Off-roading, it was done to make it street-legal in Germany back then. The Noise is measured IIRC at third gear, 4000rpm. So, it was tested in fourth gear instead of third and the car passed barely. For the pronounciation of "Gelaende" think of "Gelende" as the "e" in "Porsche" which you spoke spot-on. 2. The anti-theft sticker made sense back then, in the 90ies the crappy stock radio of my neighbor's 1987 VW Polo got stolen which had a value of 10DM at best. Whoever did it was addicted to heroine for sure - today addicts get methadone legally, that's why thefts went down significantly. 3. The first aid-kit and everything in it is required by German law, although the packing has become more compact today. But these things are still available over here. Greetings from Germany!!

I saw the price tag, could afford it. (it was about £70 iirc) and I walked in with my 'tourist' clothes to purchase. A few years ago, I worked at the Orlando International Airport in FL. I worked on the Emirates airline account as a ramp lead. We routinely had some serious super cars coming in on that flight in the cargo bay that we had to unload like a few Lamborghini's and McClarens. But the car I will never ever forget for as long as I live was the White Porsche 959. And it was one of those rare stripped down versions Doug mentioned in this video. It even had a roll cage inside. As the ramp lead, I was the one who was trusted to go inside and steer the car out. I knew exactly how special the car was soon as I saw it. I knew what a 959 was and I told my agents to be extremely careful not to scratch this car. I still have photos of it on my phone. It was the highlight of my time at that job.
@laurencekenyon81335 жыл бұрын
I owned and drove a 959 Komfort model for many years using it frequently. I was the 2nd owner and I knew the first owner and history. When I bought it the car needed some work which was accomplished with the help of PCNA and a really good old school Porsche Tech. It took some doing but eventually the car was extremely well sorted out. I also lived on a dirt road. My favorite memory is driving down the paved road at speed (100+ mph) and turning onto the dirt road changing the torque split and raising the car in mid turn. Fun. However, the hydraulic suspension was questionable at speed. I was afraid to drive it at speeds over 150 mph and don't even think about the track. G is first gear. I believe the first aid kit may have been a German road registration requirement. There is very little room under the front bonnet. Your test car didn't have the tool kit, tire pump, service manual etc. which lives there. The torque multiplying center lock wrench is really cool. The cab always seemed maybe 10% smaller than a 911 of the same period hence the tightness you experienced. Notice the lack of rain gutter..the cab is not 911. The "S" model is a decontented Komfort model not an "RS" Instead of hydraulic (lift) suspension it uses double coil-overs which made the car a significantly better handling car. And yes, most "S" models eliminated the right side mirror. But I recall the rear view mirrors (both) as the best rear view mirrors, for whatever reason, in any car I had owned previously or since. In driving an "S" I missed it. I loved owning the car. I loved seeing it in the garage. But I don't miss driving it. It was so complicated and parts were unobtainable. I often felt I was in a ticking time bomb. One more piece of trivia. The service manual contained instructions for making the test box which was necessary to reset the suspension and diagnose issues. If the suspension or anything else was out of whack there were all sorts of buzzers and lights to warn you. My test box was made with Radio Shack stuff and was never anywhere near Weissach.. When you plugged it in, depending on the test or problem, the manual instructed you what buttons to push in a complicated sequence with the answers showing up as a series of complicated blinking (warning) dash lights almost like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." It was somewhere between analog and digital but it did work.

Imagine off roading down some abandoned timber roads in this, as it was partially intended. It's arousing in ways I'm not sure I understand. FunFact: the blaupunkt stereo will cease to function if you don't play a Depeche Mode or David Bowie cassette at least bi-weekly Clutch is heavy like racing clutch is supposed to be. You're supposed to be hammering on it quite frequently and not easing it in and out.

Besides the fact the 959 is more rare, the F40 is way more fun to drive and has a lot more to do with driving pleasure, that’s what people like who like cars and that would be the reason people lose their mind when seeing a F40, it’s a icon.

Doug - with 7000 comments, probably someone has already addressed this: That First Aid Kit is nothing special. Over here in the land of the Autobahn we have a "Good Samaritan" law that requires witnesses of a traffic accident to stop and assist. That is why all registered vehicles (4 wheels and more) are required to have a First Aid Kit built to spec. They are "DIN" normed as a minimum and they are almost all exactly that size. That is why it fit so perfectly in the slot made for it. If you think about a bad accident (the 70s and 80s were a mess out on the Autobahn before ABS and airbags and crash proofed cars), this kit is not overdone at all. It also makes tons of sense to let people personalize their kit with name and vehicle plate number. You can leave it at the scene and the cops will have a litte more info about who stopped and assisted and possibly witnessed the event. Pretty smart, actually. Not much different today - with the addition of a foil space blanket. The old kits from the 70s even had smelling salts in them, lol. First Aid Kits are recommended for Motorcycles too, but right now there isn't a law requiring them.
@Peter-pv8xx5 жыл бұрын
Having a first aid kit without proper first aid training is like having a set of the best automotive tools and barley knowing what a screw driver is for, a layman can do more harm than good with either, there have been doctors and nurses who have stopped to help in accidents and wound up with a big lawsuit on their hands instead of thanks for saving a life, you can't be forced to be a good Samaritan most people wouldn't have the nerve or stomach to see the aftermath, better off leaving it to the trained professionals, another thing some people have become victims themselves by stopping especially on busy highways, they have been struck and killed trying to help, even the act of simply helping someone change a tire has led to someone being killed.
@Yootoob625 жыл бұрын
@@Peter-pv8xx I agree with you 100%. However, this is Germany and they have their rules for a reason. Every licensed driver has to take and pass a first aid course and they are taught that any help is better than no help. I have also never heard of anyone being sued for assisting - probably because there is a law that states you must. Obviously, if you are puking your guts out because the accident scene is so gruesome - then you can't offer much assistance anyways, right?
@ralpherl56575 жыл бұрын
Too bad we don't have that first aid course requirement in America, we could keep a lot of idiots and senile people off of the road. Also it should include lectures on how to avoid getting your phone out and taking video of accident victims as they die

In the early 2000's, I was a Porsche parts guy and spent my idle time exploring the parts catalog. At times I looked to the most expensive parts I could find and gravitated to the 959 and the brand new Carrera GT that one of which came through our dealer. The Carrera GT stock front PCCB brake rotors were $7500 each, similar to 911s with the PCCB option. The pad set was only around $500 for the PCCB. Then there was the GT bumper covers, $12k for front and $15k for rear. Way more than any 911 bumper cover. The 1988 959 rear bumper cover tipped the scales at SEVENTY-EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS and change. This is the list price, to be clear, but holy good god I'm still blown away by it years later. At that time, a 996 bumper cover was about $500.
