Doug, DDE had a Carrera GT, his rear suspension passenger side failed at the shock tower, dropping that side of the car, if at high speed would have been a huge issue! I do not know where Damon Friar purchased his, however also driven hard, donuts etc. Be interested to see which component it was. I have owned Porsches, have never had them not fix something that was clearly their fault, except on older Porsches the EMS bearing.

You can see the changes in this video at 2:30, and the report is available online. They changed the material of a part from X46Cr13, a stainless steel (a martensitic and not very corrosion resistant alloy) to 42CrMoS4, an alloyed steel somewhat similar to 4140, which is very common in machine/automotive components. The recalled parts are the ball joints, but they do mention the wishbones may also be affected. Don't know where that guy came up with the titanium thing, I doubt titanium components would be affected by occasional exposure to road salt.

As someone who worked at a tire shop for 10 years, I've got to say that the replacement tire idea from Porsche is a great idea. Not only might some owners still be on their factory tires, but new tires for this car aren't cheap. Sure, most owners can likely afford new tires without batting an eyelash (not sure about Doug), but would they actually replace them if they don't drive the car very often? After many years, the rubber gets dry & the owners won't bother replacing them unless they begin to lose air & drivers will have to air them up just to go for a leisurely drive. Yes,Porsche might be making the decision to replace the tires as part of a PR damage control (long after the controversy made headlines), but a new model of tire with new technology is welcome.

I don't get the titanium thing: in the recall, Porsche said the faulty part was made from "X46Cr13" and that it will be changed to a part made from "42CrMoS4". Both of those are high-strength steels. The new one has better corrosion resistance and a higher toughness (=less prone to fracture). Even if they really changed over to titanium (which, in general, has an even higher corrosion resistance), there's no way in hell the part is 100+ thousand dollars. They are probably adding the R&D as well as the tool making to the price.

The whole "don't drive it" mantra is as stupid as it sounds. It's the equivalent of not having sex with your girlfriend to save her for the next guy.

Do you get a girlfriend as an investment? Does your girlfriend's value decrease the more you have sex with her? The person that made that analogy was someone making a comedic, low-value statement. People that unironically use it as though they're making a valid point are hilarious.

I love Doug’s Sunday morning videos. My favorite format. I think the Top Gear-wannabe banter that I see in the Friday podcast or in the car spotting videos is kind of lame.

Any CGT owner who is serious about safety would have already put new tires on their cars. For those who still stick with the original tires, they just chose their own destiny.

This will also increase the value if they sell it for something else. Like the IMS bearing issue. It’s a bell weather like this “recall”. Thanks for driving and maintaining your cars. Just like Jay, drive them because they were built to be driven. Make high mile, complete maintenance, super cars the reason someone will pay more for it.

that car is something you got for yourself with your money that you're making on KZbin. Good for you. But it's not really anything that you would want to promote us any kind of decent investment. It's fussy it's expensive. This is the exact kind of problem that's bound to happen to a car like that. Maybe you shouldn't promote it to your audience so much because they are not really in a position to start thinking they can save up for something like that.unfortunately.

I refuse to believe there is a single Carrera GT out there that is both being driven (and thus would make sense for someone to go get their car repaired; and/or poses a risk for Porsche if it gets crashed), and hasn't had a *single* tyre change in almost 20 years lol. I feel like your tyre theory is a bit of a stretch.

Mark my words: somebody will want the original parts back in a Porsche parts bag so they can keep them with the car should they ever decide to sell it in hopes it will somehow make the car more valuable.

Definitely some out there. I had a 98 jag in 2020 with tires that were over 20 years old, One owner car with 140k miles somehow the tires were in pretty good shape and we got a vette at a dealer I worked at with I believe it was 4,900 miles also a 1998 with original tires guy bought it new and traded it in on a sante fe

If Porsche is springing for a free titanium parts upgrade they must have been tipped that inaction (or that a future class action by well-heeled customers) would bring down the entire VAG empire. They had no choice but to act.
