You can see the changes in this video at 2:30, and the report is available online. They changed the material of a part from X46Cr13, a stainless steel (a martensitic and not very corrosion resistant alloy) to 42CrMoS4, an alloyed steel somewhat similar to 4140, which is very common in machine/automotive components. The recalled parts are the ball joints, but they do mention the wishbones may also be affected. Don't know where that guy came up with the titanium thing, I doubt titanium components would be affected by occasional exposure to road salt.

As someone who worked at a tire shop for 10 years, I've got to say that the replacement tire idea from Porsche is a great idea. Not only might some owners still be on their factory tires, but new tires for this car aren't cheap. Sure, most owners can likely afford new tires without batting an eyelash (not sure about Doug), but would they actually replace them if they don't drive the car very often? After many years, the rubber gets dry & the owners won't bother replacing them unless they begin to lose air & drivers will have to air them up just to go for a leisurely drive. Yes,Porsche might be making the decision to replace the tires as part of a PR damage control (long after the controversy made headlines), but a new model of tire with new technology is welcome.

I don't get the titanium thing: in the recall, Porsche said the faulty part was made from "X46Cr13" and that it will be changed to a part made from "42CrMoS4". Both of those are high-strength steels. The new one has better corrosion resistance and a higher toughness (=less prone to fracture). Even if they really changed over to titanium (which, in general, has an even higher corrosion resistance), there's no way in hell the part is 100+ thousand dollars. They are probably adding the R&D as well as the tool making to the price.

Eh, that's kind of an old school point of view there. I'm suspicious these days of slicksters in fancy suits. The visibly worn out T-shirts might be a bit beyond the pale though.

If Porsche is springing for a free titanium parts upgrade they must have been tipped that inaction (or that a future class action by well-heeled customers) would bring down the entire VAG empire. They had no choice but to act.

I have a 04 RX8 and I was shocked to get a recall notice a couple years ago for control arms. I was wondering how serious it had to be for Mazda to issue a recall nearly 20 years later.

It's undoubtedly an extreme safeguarding measure to ensure Porsche can avoid costly lawsuits. The Paul Walker crash brought a lot of attention to the Carrera GT, and it would be really bad PR should other high-profile individuals get involved in accidents with them. I couldn't see Ferrari doing the same with the Enzo as well as other marques.

I hope not ONE of the 1270 CGT´s is still equipped with its original tires and gets driven regulary. Nobody would drive their econobox on tires that old... Winning lawsuits against Porsche if you crash it with old tires must be a US thing as ususal...

Could you include some images of the Old vs New suspension parts once the old ones are out of your car? It’d be interesting to see what 100k in titanium parts look like out on a work bench

This is a good idea because without traction control on the GT and the sad passing of Pual walker in the GT it’s best that they make sure these cars are 100 percent as safe as can be to protect the costumers that can afford these types of cars because inevitably they will buy more Porsches in the future but they couldn’t do that if they got into an accident and couldn’t drive anymore or worse.

If I were Doug, I'd ask if I can have cash instead of the tires. Considering it has good two year old tires, they might entertain the idea. Then you can get the full 5-6 years of use out of the existing tires and change them later.

While Porsche did the right thing, the fact that once they announced that voluntarily, they wanted people to bring their cars to a service center to be checked for a safety critical item, they open the can of worms. Especially if they internally demonstrated that a suspension component exposed to Salt mist spray that can crack under certain conditions, now they had evidence of a design flaw. The company really doesn’t want to be sitting on evidence that under certain nominal, driving conditions a safety critical part can fail. So in a sense because they had integrity they needed to issue that do not drive order. The moral of the story is Porsche did the right thing once they found out that a failure was possible without excessive external conditions
