Beeping in reverse is standard in Japan. I have owned three cars while living in Japan and they all beeped, I guess it is or was required by law. A useful safety feature considering how many very old drivers are driving around in Japan, helps them remember which gear they're in. One life saved is one life saved.

Other than Mazda mx3 and Nissan nx100, Doug can also try to get his hands on cars like Toyota WiLL and Toyota Paseo. Toyota iQ. But what's more important is for Doug to look at what other car manufacturers were offering in the 1990 especially the American brands. Let's not forget in 1990 among other great cars Toyota produced were the 1st model Previa/Estima minivan, the first generation of Lexus LS400 and also the world rally champion Celica GT4. Again, we have to look at what other cars sold during that time to realise how advanced and special these cars were. Other Toyota models that Doug maybe never saw include Toyota Corolla Levin of the 1990s which had a combo of supercharged engine with 4 throttle bodies, 5 valves per cylinder and 6 speed manual transmission and Toyota Caldina GT4. For a start, Doug can google or watch videos in KZbin.

@@angieemm Remember that this is a review. As in re-viewing old cars and to a certain extent, ascertaining whether or not it's worth buying second hand (hence the Autotrader stuff). You can only give a fair score to something if everything is on the same scale, I know more about cars than most people I know but I couldn't compare a 70's car to others like my dad can, simply because neither I, nor Doug, were alive for it.

The SLSS came with a three mode Digital Sound Processor (DSP) which cycled through 'off', 'Casual' or 'Funky' mode by use of a button labelled "WARP" on the CD/Radio or CD/Radio/Cassette head unit. These produced slight differences in sound quality through preset values for settings such as bass and treble, as well as rotating the speakers in the rear unit to either project directly into the car or bounce off the rear window. A complete and functional SLSS is one of the most highly sought after options by Toyota Sera enthusiasts, but by being factory fit is quite hard to retro-fit. The SLSS system also incorporates an amplifier with a central channel, plus a Digital Sound Processor (DSP) which has three modes - off, Casual mode and Funky Mode. These different modes provide a slight differences in the sound qualities, and also the rear deck speaker rotates from reflecting the sound from the rear hatch glass incasual mode to pointing directly towards the passenger when in funky mode. The DSP modes are controlled by a "WARP" button on the head unit. The CD has random, scan and repeat modes, the radio has 6 presets on both FM and AM bands and the cassette mechanism has Dolby and track search facilities When the car was new you could purchase the SLSS system with either a single height CD / Radio or a dual height CD / Radio / Cassette.

If you think that's crazy there's a very rare speaker that was a Japan only product. It was a rear deck speaker just like this SLSS system but aftermarket. It's the Pioneer TSX-90 which is extremely hard to find any info on. All I really know about them is that they exist and sometimes show up for sale on Yahoo Auctions. Not sure if there's any in the US. It had electronically adjustable speaker height so part of the speaker would rise up 2 or so inches! Here's a video of it in action, its amazingly pointless which makes it amazing cool lol: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5a8fmSpp6qBf5Y

That's surprisingly cheap. My father had a 1991 Mazda 929, Mazda's attempt at an ultra-luxury saloon, it's sunroof had an inbuilt solar panel which trickle fed the car battery but primarily powered vents & exhaust fans to keep the cabin 'cool' when parked. Remember back in 1991 that was nuts. Anyhow there was a massive hailstorm with Hail up to the size of tennis balls, one piece happened to crack the sunroof. Luckily the car was comprehensively insured. The replacement cost for the solar powered sunroof ALONE was $9500, and that was in the 1990's... $9500...

C'mon Doug!! Missed the trunk's ARW Subwoofer under the trunk lid, didn't address that the trunk lid cover has its own "hood prop" to keep it open (due to the weight of the boom box), the WARP button on the stereo that switches the "boom box" from Casual to Funky, the roadside Flare (red stick with its own holder on the passenger's side kick panel). I mean... quirks and features, right?? One of the weirdest cars you've reviewed and you missed some of the cool and interesting things about it. Still a fan! Hey Doug this car was called the Sera Live Sound for a reason. Toyota designed it that way for the acoustic experience. It wasn't meant to be a hot hatch. It also wasn't associated with the MR2. It was built on the Cynos, Corsa and Starlet chassis. In America that chassis was used in the Toyota Tercel and Paseo. So mechanically, they have the same parts. The Starlet Gt engine can also be swapped into it or the engine internals (I think it's the pistons) and turbo system.

No most 90s car are so far from cool and beyond ugly. If you want to talk about cool cars you look back to the 60s 70s and 80's. The only thing the 90s produced that was any good was music.

Toyota Sera was quite popular among JDM vehicle enthusiasts here in South Korea and it was easy to import since Japan is right next to us. It's so sad that most of them are junked and they're super rare now. That car is also hated by window tinting shops here because it's a pain in the neck to tint the door windows, lol

@@afcgeo882 yeah and could be 600 dollars cheaper or half as cheap. so you pay for the purpose of the stand and an additional 600 dollars to be proud to be fucked in the ass by apple :) as is with anything you buy from apple. you are paying for a purposeful thing and an extra half of the actual true value to be proud enough to be fucked in the ass by them :) in short term apple users are paying extra to be fucked in the ass by apple... by overcharging on everything they sell you.

In india we have these toyota sera's, they were like the status symbol in the early 2000 for people who could afford to buy one. It was imported from the middle east and costed around $20 k back then and now you could buy one for somewhere close to $6000. I remember these cars were equipped with an under the seat subwoofer.
