As someone who lives in Japan, allow me to clear up some things that seem to have mystified you Doug: 1) Nobody buying one of these things would ever consider driving it themselves - so they are designed around a very servile driver (actually chauffeur is a better word) - which explains many things. 2) The windows make sense that the larger windows in the back would be only under the control of the passenger, lest they mess up their coiffed hair, so the driver can only change the attitude of the smaller windows. 3) The "fabric" on the seats is Merino wool - which is actually more comfortable than leather and is still available as standard in the current model of Toyota Century in Japan - and is on the vast majority of delivered cars. There are so many little things that are only there for the very specific needs of the market the car is designed for - geriatric, wealthy Japanese. Oh, fun fact, it comes in ONLY 2 colors - Black and a sort of Battleship Grey. The vast majority sold are in Black.

19:50 Actually that's not a flag holder, it's a parking pole that's used to help people who are parking in Japan's congested cities have a better idea where the front of their car is. The little amber part lights up when you press the button labeled "A/C" that is between the steering column and the right hand door. You still see a ton of these in big cities in Japan and a lot of the dealer installed ones extend out of the bumper like old school intena.

Toyota has been making this car for a LONG time, and in 1978 I had one of the most terrifying rides in my life in one. Actually, the ride was supurb, it was the circumstances that were scary. In 1978 I was a dirt poor airman in the Air Force and had just been assigned to Yokota air base, right outside of Tokyo. For some reason the Air Force flew me to Japan commercially, and the airport was like an hour and a half drive from the base. So I get my bags, and I see this Japanese guy in a chauffeur's uniform holding a sign with my name on it. He takes me to one of these Toyota Century's, loads my bags and holds the door for me. Then I spent the next almost two hours worrying about how in the world I was going to pay for a two hour chauffeured ride. Turns out that it was contracted by the Air Force, so it didn't cost me anything, but forever after when I see one of these Century's I'm transported back to that night. Wonderful car, terrible memory.

Actually, the US government didn't pay for it. Part of the US/Japan Status Of Forces Agreement (SOFA) included transporting personnel to the base from civilian airports. I just didn't know it at the time, and I was trying to figure out how I was going to cough up a month's pay for the fancy ride.

A few 'corrections' you might find interesting: 1. The ECT button isn't sport mode for the engine, rather is changes the shift points in the transmission - this can heighten pedal reaction as the ECU tech in the OBD1 era of cars was very primitive. 2. The "flag holder" on this model either came with, or was converted to a "parking pole", an indicator to show the furthest point of the nose of the car from the driver; aiding with parking, etc. 3. The "conventional" Toyota badge (not the brand logo!) wasn't placed on cars until the 1990 model year (US), before that, it was just simply letter script, as seen on the trunk lid.

Not to mention that the "Super Monitoring Display" was not the whole cluster, it was the little screen right above the text, the 86.5-88 Supras had them (optional of course) as well. I had a '96 Toyota Aristo that had the parking pole option. I think I used it once in the whole time I owned the car. I came out from a movie to discover that two cars had parked very close at the front and rear of my car. I started doing the forward/backward thing but then a group of young guys eating at a shop next to my car started giving me signals(I saw them when I looked over to check if I could see the cars reflection in a shop window to help get out of the park). The group looked pretty drunk and I didn't really trust them, then I remembered the parking pole. I hit the button that raises the pole which showed me exactly where the front of the car was. Within one more attempt I was able to get out of the park. As I left I looked over and saw the group of guys cheering, high fiving and fist-pumping in celebration. Yep, definately drunk.

A couple of notes from an American living in Japan: The red button you wanted to press said "Shift Lock". And the "flag holder" might also be used for that, but you can tell by the translucent plastic cap that it's primarily used to mark clearly for the driver where the far corner of the car is. This is especially important and helpful in Japan where roads, in particular in older, dense cities, are extremely narrow and a full sized luxury yacht like the Century would have some very tight corners to navigate. I had that installed on my 318ti when I owned one here and it was a lifesaver when making tight turns on impossibly narrow Tokyo backroads. One more thing is the mix of English and Japanese. It is definitely unique to see buttons labeled in Japanese for a car made in the 90s, but it simply denotes that this car was never meant to be sold, much less driven, anywhere but in Japan by Japanese people. But simply to see English and Japanese text side by side is entirely normal and extremely common. In fact, in modern Japanese writing, seeing everything written in Japanese text only is rare and points to a kind of uber-traditional or consciously retro. So it's not weird to see both texts side by side (in a car, yes, but in general no).

The reason some stuff is in english (and why they are usually longer words) is because in Japan things that are in English are usually seen as higher quality. This is called “wasai-ego” or “decoration english”. The lace curtains are electric tch... Edit: the super monitor is not just a tach, it also gives you more info about the car. Temperature and even birthdays if it's the same as the cressida of the 80s. Also, the auto lights. There's a clear photo sensor next to the defroster vents. The toyota cresta came with that too, and, those sensors in the bumper are proximity sensors, so you don't crash the corners. That "flag holder" is so you don't hit the far end of the front. It illuminates green at night. A regular grandpa's corolla come with those in japan today.

Info about various things. Doug: I'm in Japan, so you're welcome to contact me though my web site and send me pictures of buttons the next time you get to borrow anything like this and I'll let you know what they do. Anyhow... The red button is the shift lock. When then engine is off, the shifter wont move. To release the transmission for towing, you need to unlock the shifter. If not a button, you insert your key into a slot. English buttons: Probably taken from international model cars. Sport mode: Almost certainly only changes the shift points on the gear box. Lace seat covers: They are only for the headrests. Still popular with elderly people in Japan. Here, some people don't even remove the factory plastic covers from the seats, or the protective covers from switches. "Flag holder" -- See other comments. Mirrors: You still sometimes see the old-style mirrors on the taxi version of the Toyota Crown that has been made the same way for decades. Size: 30 years ago, Japanese people were indeed much smaller on average. Nowadays, people are much larger, so cars have adapted.

The "flag holder" is in fact not only a flag holder. It can also show the driver exactly where the most left front point of your car is. This helps when you are turning right in some narrow places with walls on your left. So you do see this stick even in modern general toyota or other Japanese maker cars.
@UncleanerBullet5 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, the flag holder has double function, a lot of luxury cars had it back then and its always placed opposite front corner of the driver and the reason is that it is old days parking sensor also, so the driver can see from the pole how close the corner of the car exactly is from the wall etc.

Fun fact. Fender mirrors were mandated on Japanese Taxis because of a very weird reason for the west. You see, here in Japan, taxi drivers are not supposed to move their head to the left to check their left mirror because that'd mean they're also taking a peek at the passenger(s) in the rear. Privacy. So, fender mirrors were a very useful for respecting the privacy of the passengers and also meant that the driver was looking straight ahead, at the road, not rotating his head like a beacon. The new taxi for Tokyo called Toyota JPN Taxi also features fender mirrors. And one more thing. The Toyota Century is based on the Toyota Crown, the japan exclusive "ultra"-luxury model.
@Electroo785 жыл бұрын
I was actually looking for this comment, you are the type of guy like me. Btw it is more safe too to have the mirrors there, you dont have that much of blind area. We dont need those new sensors and cameras, the japenese figured it out way back...

@@Electroo78 and also yeah, forgot about the safety bit. Extra extra, the Toyota Century was also intended to be exported, but certain factors kept Toyota from bringing this car in the EU and US markets, mostly because Rolls-Royce, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Bentley and the sorts already exist, and it'd be difficult for Toyota to compete, especially at the price of it new. If i remember correctly, a G40 with chassis code VG40 Century like the car in the video costed, in 1990, from period brochures from a Toyota Store in Meguro, about 15.000.000 JPY.

Thats not a flag holder. It’s a corner marker to show the driver where the corner of the vehicle is. Before parking sensors existed. Many Japanese cars have these.

It just also conveniently holds a flag lol

@@aaronmoon3535 it cant, it flexes too much to hold a flag at speed.

You're right, the corner marker isn't a flag holder. But if you look, Doug is pointing (correctly) to the bit on the bumper, that's the flag holder. You can unscrew the marker to put in a flag, on a metal stick. (Doug shows some pictures throughout of it in use)

The seats are wool not cloth. While not popular or mostly unknown in America, wool is common in upscale cars in Japan.
