+dx2800 eerrrrrmm, The Land Rover was originally designed for agricultural use, being fitted with a PTO shaft, as well as general everyday use.... many farmers do use other brands like Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan, Ford or Isuzu, but many many still use the Land Rover. I myself have a 1978 Lightweight Land Rover which we have put a 1996 Defender 300TDi engine in, and although not finished yet, will be used as everyday vehicle and farm work, which is exactly what it was used for before the better engine upgrade. At the min though we use a late 1990s Ford Ranger as farm truck. Yeah loads of people modify the bollocks off the Defender, but so what? some of them use it for work, others for offroad trips etc, dont mean theyre arseholes

@baines39348 жыл бұрын
I have never left a dislike on a video before now. While all your points about it are valid, you have utterly missed the actual reason anyone would ever own a Defender: its off-road prowess. The Defender was build to be a go anywhere vehicle, and thankfully, the majority of them ended up becoming dependable workhorses, used by people who relied on them day in and day out. They were designed to collect sheep off hillsides, carry camera-men across Africa, operate at insane perpendicular angles of up to 30° and they are even still used today by the UK military. They were NOT made to be driven around suburbia by posers like yourself who think they look cool! If anything, your conclusion is the exact reason you should not own a Defender...

Donny Donster Because most "iconic" American cars do not perform in the way they are designed to perform. They are slow, badly made, gas guzzling monsters. The defender, despite all its faults, was designed to be an off road car, and is listed to be one of the best off road cars on the planet. It's not designed to be cool or comfortable or fast. It goes anywhere and does anything. Just how it was designed.
@alecnull7 жыл бұрын
+Samlawts When I think iconic American cars, I think Mustang, Corvette, Ford GT, Viper, and Camaro, all of which are great at what they were built for and certainly not slow. And if you're going to defend the Defender, you can't knock other cars for reliability.

+Chris Fokjohn He's not though. No ABS? Incredibly agricultural design? Lack of amenities? Thats why people want this rig. All the things he sated as bad are the exact reasons people want these. You can have your New "SUV" that is actually a lifted car. I'm not saying I think they're worth the money people want for them, but these trucks are exactly what people like me want, rugged, simple and incredibly capable off road.

Matt Close You can find what you listed for less than a grand on Craigslist, how can you justify a small house's worth of money over that shit?
@Martyntd58 жыл бұрын
+Chris Fokjohn You cant. I've owned a Defender for 7 years. It was 2 years old when I bought it and in immaculate condition with 11,000 miles. I paid £17K pounds for it - which I thought was over-priced, but I wanted one and it was a nice example so I bit the bullet. It's been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned and I've loved every minute behind the wheel, but you'd have to be a bellend to pay $70k for one - or an American. The one featured in this video would sell for about £3500 in the UK.
@awesomesauce4467 жыл бұрын
The thing is, the Defender (at least in the UK) is not a hobbyists car. You don't buy a Defender to go off-roading or on camping trips like Americans seem to with Wranglers, nor do you buy one to own the road like you do with the Cherokee. The Defender is pretty much the only car on the market that was designed predominantly for UK farmers, since it was essentially a modified version of the original Land Rover that was built for traversing the terrain of northwestern Europe during WWII and has remained fundamentally unchanged since this inception. It doesn't need high power, or earth turning torque; let alone airbags and climate control when it's predominantly used for driving at below 40mph around muddy hillsides, with a sheep in the back and a shotgun on the passenger seat.

I'm British and I'm not offended. The Defender by far is not for you if you want speed or luxury, it's a tough and rugged off-road compatible vehicle and takes balls to drive its very similar to the Jeep Wrangler in many ways. Both really cool vehicles tho!

+becton98 There are coach building shops that refurbish 80's Defenders to look like brand new and meet US import specs and they end up costing around $40,000 for a fully rebuilt one including shipping and duties for a Defender 110. No one pays $70,000 for them. No one. The trick with the 80's ones is that they are over 25 years old, making them classic cars by US law and they don't have to meet current emissions standards, which means you can order one with a late 80s diesel or petrol engine, a full air con system, all windows and locks electric, automatic transmission, an AM/FM CD system, the works! They will also re-do all the lighting to LED and Xenon, proper modern door handles and they fit the current model interiors.
@jonathanb19878 жыл бұрын
Jeep people don't really care that you have a defender. It's cool but I don't think it's cooler than a Jeep. It's just a rare vehicle in the US, and that is the only it has going for it.

Simple off road vehicles depreciate slow, very slow, a 1960 off-road in good condition is as useful today as it was 50 years ago, seriously in my country (Colombia) farmers love the Jeep Willis MB, Jeep CJ, Land Cruisers J40, J50, original Defenders etc... but whoever buys this in 70K is a moron, you can buy a Rubicon for less money, or super-reliably Land Cruiser 79 short bed again for less money.

Calling the Defender an SUV is an insult. It's one of the most capable off-road vehicles of all time, not an SUV. It wasn't designed for commuting or family car use. It was designed for crossing deserts and crawling through forests. It's used by the military in several countries.

Part of the Defenders resale price shows how many of us want high-quality, long lasting, yet basic transportation.
