Actually, the US also got the fine 4.2L V8 with 5 valves per cylinder. More rare, but probably marginally more reliable (no turbos to replace? Not sure how the transmission would like it though.

We got several engines in the C5 generation, including the 2.7TT, the 2.8L N/A, the 3.0L, and the 4.2L V8. I probably missed one or two, but I've been driving an '00 A6 2.8 Quattro for a long time now, and it's never been a problematic or expensive car to own. Then again, both my family and myself are fairly technically inclined and we do our own work at home. Religious maintenance is key with any luxury or sports car, and it's kept mine going w/o issues for almost twenty years.

In the UK the most popular variation of this car was the one with the 2.5 diesel engine which pusshed out a very respectable 180bhp. Funninly in the UK these cars do not have a bad reptation and are to a certain extent still sort after today.
