The steering was upgraded in 2008. They went to the T6060 transmission that year as well with carbon syncros. Also if you got the Z07 Ultimate Performance Package you got carbon ceramic brakes and Brembo calipers, which is a significant upgrade. You also got magnetorheological shocks. For 1 year only (2011) if you opted for the Z07 UPP, you got hi-flo cats and the ZR1 (3 1/2" diameter) exhaust, giving an added 40 horse power. In 2012, due to California emissions, they went to 4 cats. Knowing it would suffer a drop in HP, for the 2011 model year, they increased the output and used the ZR1 exhaust on the Z06/Z07.

I remember my first time seeing a C6 Z06 in person at Atlanta Dragway. Valvoline had brought a black one to run on their trailer dyno and demonstrate that their oil helped maintain consistent performance. It sounded fantastic but it was absurdly loud. So much so that when we spoke with one of the booth attendants, he told us that they were only allowed to run their demonstration once per hour because other vendors had complained to event staff that the constant dyno runs they'd done the day before were distracting. Having an 08 Z06, one of the feature that I find funny is the adjustable steering wheel. The telescopic function is electronic, which was pretty nice for those years. But the height was still adjustable by pulling a good old lever. Another little detail that this car had was a fuel economy feature, forcing you to shift from 1st to 3rd on certain circumstances. If you gently rev the first gear over 2000rpm, the dashboard will tell you to shift to third and the 2nd becomes kinda blocked even if you want to ignore their eco driving advice... Happily, a cheap little device can be plugged to the transmission to remove that.

I have the same 2006 Z06 in yellow! I love it! I am unfortunately trying to sell it now too. The actual key is used to lock the center console and I think open the doors if the key fob battery dies. Newer Vettes got new key fob design that hides the metal key inside, but 2005-07 (I think) use older key fob design with an actual key that’s separate. These cars will lock themselves when you get out, close the door and walk away, and will unlock when you try to open the door and have the key fob on you. Can’t think of any other car that had this feature back in 2005/06. The navigation is pretty outdated today obviously, but what’s really cool about it is that it actually has a 3D mode! I’ve been using it since I found out about it while messing in the radio controls and settings haha. It’s pixelated but works just like any other navigation in today’s cars! And the Z06, at 3,132 lbs is just under 50 lbs lighter than the lightest C6 base model Corvette (3,179 lbs), not 14 lbs lighter. It’s 14 lbs heavier than C5 Z06 but with 100-120 hp more than C5 Z06, it more than makes up for it. And apparently the C6 Z06 with Z07 package is even lighter, at 3,073 lbs (according to Wikipedia). Really awesome cars! Buy one now before prices go up!

As a former owner and racer of a C6z, love seeing this thru Doug’s eyes. It is a bargain until your engine grenades at 160mph at Auto Club Speedway and you realize it’s 20-25k to rebuild or build from scratch, and the C5z is only like 5-6k for the same problem. C5 better budget racer. Like many, I pulled everything out of the car down to the tub and fame and put a cage, huge APR wing and canards. Oh, and the physical key fob I believe, can be put into a slot in the glove box if the car and fob stop communicating (dead battery) in order to start the car. I also remember Ll the quirks of the TPMS putting you in limp mode right before your track session. Pro-tip, get a TPMS reset device, pull up next to any other GM car from that era and click the button. Worked every time.

Even punching it in a straight line with TC/active handling off could have the rear completely stepped out, and putting a little too much throttle going through a corner would have you spinning. I learned real quick what NOT to do while driving that thing. With that said, I loved every second of it.

A few things to know. There have been numerous updates and upgrades since 2006. Also, using non EM tires will dramatically improve ride, handling and noise levels. At over 100Kmiles, expect to put out a lot of $$$ because the HVAC actuators go bad. The engine radiator tends to fracture. And the PS lines may leak. Also, many have failed fuel pumps. And the fuse/relay block (about 85-90% of where all the fuses and relays are) is a major weak spot for the fuel pump circuit. A Painless FP fuse/relay relocation harness kit was a perfect solution as the blocks are discontinued. I think I got the last one. Replacing the FP is no joke. The left tank has to drop down in back. In the past 3-4 years, I've had to put about $15K in for maintenance/repairs. Milage is currently about 125K. It's a 2013. So I do drive mine and it's been tracked for HPDE courses. Currently, 100% of the car is working. It feels like it has only 25Kmi and I can't imagine a significantly better car overall for the money. It's def a keeper. Just hope I can still get a few parts...That's the most scary part....

@@shone190 This is an excerpt from Hib Halverson's "Ruthless Pursuit of Power": GM Recognizes the Problem: In mid-2012, official GM, finally, acknowledged the LS7 valve guide wear controversy. According to public statements made by GM engineers at the "Corvettes at Carlisle" event that summer and content posted on forum sites by Chevrolet Customer Service on 11 October 2012, the condition affected engines in "...some 2008-2011 Z06es." and was discovered during an investigation into warranty claims involving cylinder heads. The volume of problems with heads spiked from "...practically zero to 6.5 problems per 1000 engines." Chevrolet Senior Customer Relationship Specialist, Evan Sawaya, said in web forum posts, "Through inspection of returned heads, it was determined that a machining error in the valve guide had occurred at our head supplier." According to Sawaya, the most common customer complaint with engines having heads with worn guides due to this "...machining error..." is excessive valve noise. GM stated that the problem was solved in February of 2011 and the solution verified with inspection of 100% of cylinder head production.

As long as the interior looks nice, there are good leather seats and there aren't a bunch of squeaks and rattles, then I'm perfectly fine with plastic surfaces to a certain degree. I love cars like this because of the way they look, SOUND and handle. If I want a luxurious interior, then I'd buy a luxury car.

I have an atomic orange 2009 z06. I've had it for almost exactly 4 years. I've had some great cars in my time: Audi coupe gt, Audi 4000 quattro, Audi UrQuattro, 911 SC, 2 ND miatas, RS3, M240i, but my Z06 is BY FAR the best car I've ever had. It lays everything else to waste in terms of power, sound, and handling. It's my daily driver, and i commute 20 miles each way. It's truly my forever car.

Cheers ehhh! I have an 09 Atomic Orange Z06 also. Had to have this color and searched for years to find it. Found it in 13, and is my forever car, sitting next to my forever Boss 302 car, lol. Got Lingenfelter OEM built heads so no exhaust valve failure kaboom. Otherwise stock, and truly enjoy it. Cheers from Canada :-)

I miss the 2010 Corvette LS3 in cyber grey I had years ago. I bought it used and whoever had it before me added a Corsa exhaust system and despite being just a base Corvette with 430 horsepower LS3 engine instead of this 505 hp Z06 with an LS7 engine shown here, it was still loud as hell and constantly backfired when I let off the gas pedal which sounded kind of like thunder. The car felt so angry and raw even when driven casually and hitting the pedal slammed me to the seat and the car thundered in anger constantly. Even starting it up with that weird starter button made an exploding thunderous start up sound which lets anyone know the car is loaded with gobs of V8 power before it is even driven anywhere. Corvette just has such a visceral fierce experience I have never had in any other car I have owned. But I still wish I would have had the Z06 or a ZR1 instead, the real deal.

The first Corvette Z06s were made in 1963. The C5 was the second Corvette offered with a Z06 package.

I have an 09 Atomic Orange Z, and absolutely love it. A comfortable, easy to drive 500hp car. Make sure you have the heads done. Plenty of exhaust valve failures have tsken place, and catastrophically destroyed engines. Otherwise strong cars :-)

I was surprised Doug didn't mentioned this issue. Seems pretty common and it's very catastrophic.

Honestly the ZO6 is really a an amazing car, when you actually look close, the suspension and the design, you realize this was built for the track, Prices are already going up.

I have a base C6, yes the tail swings freely in corners. It handles the best of any car I have driven so far, but I think a C8 or a ZL1 would be better/more refined for lap times

I loaded lumber into a Corvette… I worked at Menards in ~2000 helping customers load their purchases. One day, in rolled a c5 with a missing passenger seat…It fit a few 8' 1x8's.

I've been looking at C6 Z06's was told it's a good idea to plan on replacing the heads because of valve guide problems causing dropped valves and ruining the engine, and this problem was found on alot of the LS7's. Is this true?
@JB-ej8zy10 ай бұрын
Yes. Although it dont happen to all zo6's it is a problem. I would look more into it online.

I still dream of owning one of these. The c5 was a childhood dream car along with the 2nd gen viper and these solidified the fact that I one day must, have a spicy vette. These are so gorgeous
@Pandamasque10 ай бұрын
Nobody talks about this, but C6 Z06 is a true HOMOLOGATION SPECIAL. To win GT1 at Le Mans 24h they needed a lightweight aluminium coupe chassis and they needed a bigger engine block to make that Katech LS7.R race engine of it (best sounding V8 in history). This is why C6 Z06 came to be. And the C6.R did win. A lot.

This model is tops on my list if I ever get another Vette. My 77 looked good but was a dog performance wise. My 2001 C5 6 speed coupe was great fun and in Millenium Yellow was a head turner. But this 427ci car is way ahead of the rest.

GM also sent about 138 LS7's to Australia and into the engine bay of our Zeta`based HSV W427. They are among one of the most collectable HSVs today and when obtainable fetch north of $200k

Slight correction on the claim of the LS7 not being in other models than the Z06. It was also in the 2013 427 Convertible Collector Edition Corvette. Which was technically NOT a Z06.
@rod75010 ай бұрын
It was also in the Holden Special Vehicles W427. I wouldn't expect that to be general knowledge for anyone outside of Australia but it's another GM car which used this engine.....

The key is the manual open for the trunk. If the battery dies, you can open the trunk and open the doors to then open the hood. The lock is right above the rear license plate.
