When I was six years old, my dad went to the UK on business and purchased me a metallic blue 1:18 scale model Ghibli. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen (at the time)! A few months later my 2 yo little brother got ahold of and destroyed it, rippedout the plastic seats and pulled of and lost the wheels. I was mortified! I tried not to cry in front of my dad. He could see I was upset... A few days later my mom and I were spring cleaning my room and she found the Ghibli hidden under my bed (I hoped I could fix it somehow)... but she told me I should throw it away.... I took one last look at the long sleek body and started weeping...me mom asked me why wept and all I said was..."It still looks sooooo good!" Since then it was a bucket list car of mine!

And gmail has a lot more business features which doug could benefit from.

One of the most beautiful cars ever made. Funny how you always point to things as odd or strange, but everything need the perspective of the initial design area. Unlabelled switches and buttons, check, you have the manual for that and the dealer to explain. The interior is amazingly beautiful. Keep driving the car and suddenly you’ll see all buttons and switches are exactly there where needed when driving. The back is perfectly done when seeing it from the right perspective. Building a car has an order. So the carpeting is pure logic and efficient. Filling up the holes with cushions is a great idea, for noise reduction. The fact you can take them out for convenience of space is genius. Air vents in the back? Brilliant. The speed when driving will create different air pressure between the interior and outside world thus sucking out ‘used air’ from the interior. And some other things,.....it’s just design 😁 Who cares the headrest only has two useable settings. When taking it out it is symmetrical. Design. This is one of the most most beautiful cars ever made. Sometimes one just has to drop the ego and ‘needed’ comfort. A car is made for emotions, driving, enjoyment, love.

Indeed a beauty to look at . 10 out of ten for looks BUT it is beyond annoying in regards to inbuilt headaches like the access to the boot , the fake rare seats that are no seats but 'storage' , the buttons on the dash with out signs on them and the ones hidden below makes for a stressful day . a thief could always see whats in your boot for it has a glass top! The engine might be nice sounding and a dream to cruise in but there are to many inpractical headaches and flaws attached . It is a car only for a nice sunny day and never for daily usage in rain or fog , a toy for a rich man who uses a mercedes as a run around and this for dating only and when no date day is set in the diary then it sits in the garage. If they were as good as he makes out then i would have seen more of them. In all the 34 years living in london i only saw a few and that was in the 80s . After that you just did not see any of them anymore . Why ? Just not practical and probably always playing up for the italians always do . A friend of mine has a new masseratti four door and one day it would not start and i had to pick him up from his house in my trusted old workhorse the Merc. This is a toy for a hobby and you have to treat it like a lap pet . It will never be a workhorse. For all its outer beauty it will let you down just a mistress or your estranged wife.

We must be about the same age. You’re comment made me think back to that time and how seeing, letting alone driving one of these old classics ( also , the smell of these old interiors is unique also) takes a person right back to one’s childhood. My parents divorced and while I did see my father again, I was subsequently raised by my grandparents. But both my old man and grandfather were car guys. Grandpa had a six car garage with some classics sailing in and out of there and tinkering around with these as a young boy with him were always good memories. Like the Alex Gray avatar btw. Doug, I've watched many, many of your reviews, and I'm not sure I've seen you have as much pure driving pleasure as you got from the car. You've enjoyed other models, but something about the nostalgia, and sound and response and comfort from this car just seems like it was at the top. Just my reaction.

rear vent is to let the air to exit if you open the front quarter glass
@argh19896 жыл бұрын
Actually the front quarter window opens in a way that would suck air from the inside to the outside. So between the interior air vents and those little windows you'd get a draught/draft so cigarette smoke was guided out of the cockpit. The rear vents are probably for air pressure balance when you close a door or the trunk while someone is sitting inside.
@TameemAlkadi6 жыл бұрын
It’s for cigarette smoke because in the 70’s😅
@panuncdfable6 жыл бұрын
To let air exit if you fart.
@rars0n6 жыл бұрын
El Ciervo Inforrect. I've never seen a front window vent that opens in the other direction (probably because it's easier to seal that way). Opening the vent creates a low-pressure area which sucks air into the vehicle. The entire purpose of these vents was to bring in fresh, flowing air back when cars didn't have air conditioning. Also, air pressure balance when closing the trunk or door makes no sense, that's just not an issue.
@stevem5383 Жыл бұрын
In the early days olectric windows the mechanisms were not particularly reliable. As a backup, many manufacturers left the mechanical winding mechanisms intact, replacing the handle with a plug. Usually, a spare handle was provided in the tool kit so that if the electric mechanism failed, the owner could pop the plug, insert the handle and wind the window up. Not sure if this was the case with this particular car but it was certainly common. I suspect the they engineers just didn't decide to cover a hole with a plug.

At the time Joe Walsh owned a Mazarati 5000gt, capable of around 162MPH, which would have shown higher on the speedometer, because marketing. Trip Odometer: that's how they all worked. My '82 Yamaha Seca does the same thing, as did my "81 Chevrolet Chevette. Gas tanks: My '83 GMC pickup worked the same way. My '75 Toyota Celica had a front-hinged hood. Lots of storage compartments behind the seats? My 260Z and Dodge Durango say hello. I guess what I'm trying to say is that If you put together all of the quirks and features...I've essentially owned a Mazarati Ghibli without ever having owned one. Oh, the "fake seats" classified the car as a 2+2, which meant the owner got a break on road taxes in most countries, as compared to a 2 seat car.

Yes indeed and even more so perhaps then the Tansim certainly from the outside but the tansim was more comfi and less quirky on the inside for the inside of this one has to many confusing buttons some even hidden that would drive anyone round the bend and this is why the previous owner ('probably a German') after having initially gone mad with frustration drew out a map to explain it for he does not want any phone calls from the buyer who would aske him on a weekly basis : hey what does this do or that do ?

Gorgeous car, truly beautiful, why oh why can't cars be designed like this anymore, the style and wow factor of this original ghibli knocks spots off any modern day maserati, or come to that pretty much any modern day car that springs to mind. Great review Doug I love seeing these old classics being driven, although some of those scores seem a bit harsh, 0-60 in 6.2 secs one of the fastest cars of its day and only deserves 3 of of 10 for acceleration?! Good job you weren't my examiner at college!
