My dad was in the Kathy Mattea band from '89-'96. He never did this particular series, but he did a couple tours with Dougie. I am very blessed that I got to grow up with this music.

I was captivated by this song having viewed this session on a video during a holiday on the Isle of Wight in the late 1990’s before I knew who Dougie McLean was. Heard it again performed by the band Ceolas outside a pub during a Crewe and Nantwich folk festival years later, bought their CD learnt the song. Fast forward over a decade and I am living in Scotland playing this song in folk clubs, seeing Dougie in concert and even get the chance to perform on the open stage of his autumn festival.

My favorite song of Dougie's hands down... I remember walking the streets of Las Vegas listening to this song on my IPod and thinking about how true the lyrics were in contrast to the glitter and sham that surrounded me. I put the song on repeat and listened to it for the next few hours as I roamed around taking in how scarred that city seemed underneath all the shiny neon.

It's beautiful when the insight downloads so potent and clearly in those kinds of places... I always say that a Garden is most needed in the cruelest of cities...than anywhere... The Heart looks for Sanctuary through the storm OOXOO

I had the privileged of seeing Dougie perform at the Aronoff Center for the Arts Downtown Cincinnati several years ago. While I was waiting for a cab to go home. He had come out front. Got to meet him. Very nice, humble man.

Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever". All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.

I've loved this song since I heard it for the first time 20 years ago. Recently I've started learning how to play the guitar and if I can't find the chords for a song I can sometimes figure them out just by listening to it. However, if a song starts out in Fm I can't yet extrapolate where to go from there. I have looked in Chordie and Ultimate Guitar but can't find chords to Turning Away. Can anybody advise me?
@ButterflyMcGrew11 жыл бұрын
Never mind, I'm just going to transpose it to something that's easier to play and fits my voice better anyway. :-)

Paula Steiner Yes, Fm is a tune very difficult for guitar. Even the professionals avoid it and use a capo!

First time hearing the original... literally haven't heard halfway through this song before. Always listen to Mary Black. The United States has inflicted more injuries on me than I can sustain. I am a perpetual slave. And even if I manage to elevate my circumstances, I will always loathe those who took away my right to work, my right to think freely, those who drugged me and kept me from real healthcare for years, and are headed toward trying to again as I write this. Cause you can't win with... well you can. Calling my medical doctor later today, seeking help. Transgender. But I gotta have balls. F**K THE UNITED STATES!! In daylight we're oblivion... holy shit I didn't even realize how much this song fits me. In darkness... it's dark outside right now all right xD. Only the children of our children know, the price we had to pay. I know if I don't pay it, next generation will be even more afflicted by the Empire than I have been. I don't think I'm going to. I'm too much a pussy. But I know I should. When I figure out how to make it count.

Dead on. I am sorry you had such a dismal experience. You expressed the sentiment in the political experience of this country I was feeling when I was listening to this song. Wishing you happiness.

Shame! Including Kathy Mattea in this fundamental Celtic (east Atlantic) song turns this into sometihng Gulf of Mexico or Pacific! Then the words are wrong. Come on Dougie, get it right, man, for fuck's sake.
@e2k4210 жыл бұрын
LOL - wtf?? Kathy Mattea is pure Appalachia, which is Scots-Irish to the roots. Where are you getting Gulf of Mexico or Pacific? Are you seriously telling Dougie to get his own song "right"??? You're a funny guy.
