Ordered my second W1, 2 days ago, it arrived today, 6 degrees Fahrenheit in my hometown. It arrived around 9 am ,private courier. It wasn't too terribly cold to touch. At 2 pm UPS dropped off my Swiss +Tech D2 I ordered. It was in the middle 20s temp wise. If this knife ,with it's visible tang- throughout handle- were any colder, it would give me frostbite. I can't say that it falls short of what the Odenwolf W1 can do, rendering wood, and I'm partial to it's leather sheath. They both punch above their price range at $25 each. To noticeable step up in quality for what they are meant to be, you would be in a $300 neighborhood. If I had to call it between the two, I'd say Swiss Tech in the summer, Odenwolf in the winter.

I think the 440C blade choice might have been to keep the price down. I believe there is more variety in their European web site, and expect that to be coming to the US. They just launched the US web site Saturday

BPS and Beavercraft actually makes full tang knives which are Mora like and inexpensive. Although carbon steel and wood handles. Yeah, I own one of the orange Odenwolf knives. It seems to be a tough knife.

Doug, I had asked a question before about which blade steel you like, also, which model knife is this, thanks, I like it
@JoeXTheXJuggalo12 жыл бұрын
Now that's a nice looking blade. Also as a part German myself I'll say you can beat that good ol' German ingenuity and quality. Especially after seeing you give it a beat down and somewhat stress use. I also like the price on their blades. Most reviews on camping and outdoor knives fall in 1 of 2 categories. They're either really cheap on price and cheaper on quality or it's not worth me even buying it due to it being ridiculously overpriced. Seeing how it seems to hold up after all that torture you put it through I actually may buy one for myself. Recently I actually was looking around for a good adorable outdoors/EDC knife. I mean the so called "outdoor" knife in the camping section of my local Walmart was like $25-$30 and I want about to blow my money on something as cheap looking at that for that price. Only question I have was after doing all that testing on the knife how was the blade edge doing? Did it need any sharpening or anything?
@DougShoeBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
It came sharp and after all the testing seen in the video, it's still sharp. One of the last tests in the video, I was trying to make the finest "feather" curls that I could. My own German ancestry goes back the early 1700s New England, and would be mixed after that.
@JoeXTheXJuggalo12 жыл бұрын
@@DougShoeBushcraft thank, that's what I was mainly concerned about was it's sharpness after doing all of that. That's one way to tell the quality of a blade. If it starts to dull or the edge starts to show signs of damage after only using it a little bit. My German side of the family is from grandmother and grandfather. My grandmother was German and my Grandfather was a WWII veteran from the US.

Doug, I went to their site and very reasonably priced. QUESTION; which steel is the best blend of durability and ease of sharpening? I’m guessing carbon steel is easier to sharpen but doesn’t hold an edge. Stainless, just opposite? But then there’s all the versions of stainless. When I figure that out, I’m ordering one, great reviews

@Doug - Will I have trouble using this with XXL hands?
@DougShoeBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
I don't think you would have trouble, but I don't know. I have average sized hands, I think. I compared the Odenwolf to the older model of Mora 511. The Odenwolf handle is longer and also thicker diameter.
@DDDYLN2 жыл бұрын
@@DougShoeBushcraft thank you. I appreciate the honest answer. I've actually received 2 different answers on the hand size issue, from 2 different videos on this knife. If the knife had a generous finger choil, I wouldn't be as concerned. I'm still not sure which stainless steel outdoor knife I'm going to buy. I like these Odenwolf 440C knives a lot, especially the price and blade size (I'm looking for something smaller). That said, I love my Cold Steel Recon Tanto in SK-5 carbon steel (1080 to 1085 equivalent). The Cold Steel Recon Tanto, in San Mai 3 steel, is currently $100.30+tax. if the price goes down after Christmas, by $15-$25, I think I'll be buying the CS Recon Tanto in San Mai 3.

Hi Doug, question about your use of this is how often do you not carry this.
@DougShoeBushcraft Жыл бұрын
I was carrying it last night at a bonfire. I use it a lot. It's hard to say how often because these days people are giving me all kinds of knives to test and review. But this one I keep going back to. I have found the sheath clips conveniently to the US Army M65 jacket liner for winter carry.

Physical appearance of your new knife seems bulky? Pros and cons?
@DougShoeBushcraft Жыл бұрын
No I wouldn't describe it as bulky. Knife alone 5 oz, or 6 oz w/ sheath on my scale. Not too long for EDC IMO. Company markets it as "just the right size" and I would tend to agree.

Fallkniven has already been doing these style knives as well. Great blades, nearly indestructible. Way expensive though. Never heard of these guys but love the look. I like the blade isn't too thick like Fallknivens can be (although great feature for batoning). Great design for hunting as well. Low maintenance and quick and easy to clean off.
