Over the weekend, Dove posted an image on Facebook that appears to show a black woman transforming into a white woman.

I remember that commercial. it was a whole bunch of people removing their shirts. and that particular clip shows going from Black to White to Brown. I can understand if the order kept getting lighter skin but c'mon. Like they say... you see what you wanna see... if you look hard enough you can find racism in everything. When does it end??? I think DOVE did nothing wrong here.

The problem is skin bleaching is a real problem around the world, which they know, because Unilever sells these products. There are whole countries that struggle with these body image issues. This advert is at best tone deaf, but appears to reinforce you should buy our fantastic whitening products. These products are both literally and culturally toxic. This is a prime example of why you should pay someone to sit in the corner and tell you why your idea is stupid.

hecklebeckle The dove commercial was not racist at all. I also love that you give the definition of racist. When people act out on their racist beliefs and get others to join in it can be so harmful. Years of history have shown that. Slavery, civil rights movement, KLU klux klan, holucaust hitler nazis, police brutality. Classism, is another harmful one. Yeah, maybe one day the elites and the under dogs can all be at peace...

That's literally why the ad received backlash. It looked as though it was portraying black as dirty and bad and white is clean and good. There have been ads made historically in the 1900s with this exact same message that was conveyed regarding laundry soaps that used black ppl to portray dirt and white ppl to portray clean. This ad did come across as racist.
@amic77853 жыл бұрын

@CatherineSTodd10 күн бұрын
The reaction to the ad went too far. It is ridiculous to think that anyone was saying "darker skin needs to be lighter." After living in the South for 40 years, I have seen that racism on BOTH SIDES is all too alive and well, but there's "reverse racism" seeing racism under every leaf and stone. This is one of those times. Dove did nothing wrong and I for one would never have said "we missed the mark." Dove did nothing wrong.
@jazze.27297 жыл бұрын
The ad was ridiculous. If they wanted to show how incredible DOVE was they should have had an ad of women living three different lifestyles!!! For instance one woman could have been at the gym taking a shower and when she puts down the bottle of dove another woman picks it up but she's in her bathroom at home, then there's one woman whose maybe looking at her "dry skin" and as soon as she uses DOVE.... her skin is GLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean come on. They could've used 3 different woman...still have been creative and had people celebrating them!!! Who is coming up with these advertisements? It's time to bring millennials into the BOARD ROOM!!! the days of the baby boomers making all the decisions in Hollywood has got to come to an end if we ever want to evolve! We need fresh minds that celebrate diversity and will step outside the box.

If you can't see that this is subliminal messaging, then you're either naive or just aren't that bright. These advertisers know exactly what they're doing, they go to school for this and study marketing. I know one thing though, the people in this country need to get over the fact that GOD MADE people in various colors, and trying to change that is going against HIM and his creation. Stop trying to force dark skinned women to want to change themselves and encourage them to love themselves instead.

It would have because that's how society has been for years no matter how hard i try to look at this commercial in a different way i can't if people keep see why someone can't see how someone can watch this and react " WOAH they're saying black people are dirty your in denial. Sadly that's the first thing many are going to think because it has been ingrained in people's heads for a long time don't understand how they didn't think of this before they released it. Just show a diverse range of classy, hapoy people. You don't get anywhere by beating people over the head and subtle, positive messages are more effective.
