This cover is amazing and beautiful, but I still don’t think it can measure up to how emotional the unplugged version is. Laynes voice for one is unlike an other especially when it comes to conveying emotions thru singing. But even more than that is the fact the he wrote these songs and knowing about what he went thru and struggled with, it just adds another level of weight to the song

Jerry was very shy about his voice in the beginning but Layne pushed him to sing more and more on the songs saying "they're your songs, you should sing them". If it wasn't for Layne being such a great friend we wouldn't have gotten the incredible harmonies that they shared. ???? This is pretty obviously not live. Notice how the audio doesn't sync with what he's playing? Why do you think he cropped out his picking hand? Also, no one naturally sings this consistently or in-tune. You can hear the artifacts of the post processing, especially in the beginning. 4:56 ...and at the end. Super obvious here.

@@bsmith8166 Got it, it’s there but subtle. “Bury me softly….” slightly off. The guy is still the real deal.
@bsmith81663 ай бұрын
@ktrock77 No, he isn't. The auto tune isn't subtle either. Can you not hear how his pitch is unwavering and exact? That's melodyne. Melodyne does a great job at sounding natural, but nobody can sing that exactly. It's not possible. Don't be fooled. I hope you aren't this easily fooled with AI stuff. We really need to do a better job of training the older people on media literacy and recognizing when stuff has been digitally altered. Truth is, he's probably a really good singer, but the pitch correction software makes it superhuman. It's like when good-looking women use face filters and end up looking uncanny valley. If you know how humanity normally appears, the perfect digital facsimile becomes a creepy mockery solelessly mimicing humanity without any imperfections. The guitar playing is off, too. You can see how the right hand doesn't sync with the audio. That's obviously why this creator cropped it out. Sure, there's an argument that this is art and only the end product matters, but it sets an unrealistic standard, and by removing the imperfections, you remove much of what makes art beautiful in the first place. Struggle, effort, hard-won talent, emotion. That's why we like music. Please apply more scrutiny. It's not a big deal when you fail to spot a guitar player using digital cheat codes to artificially enhance a performance, but I worry you aren't thinking critically about other media you consume. You can end up being duped by AI to believe all sorts of nonsense if you aren't careful.

AIC has been a constant in my life since I discovered them in college and was lucky enough to have seen them live in 1992. I've said for many years since then that "Down in a Hole" and "Rain When I Die" represent the pinnacle of what Alice achieved in the Layne Staley era - both representative of their overall sound, but artistically the top of their game. So to cover "Down in a Hole", get the sound and the vibe on the money, but at the same time make it your own, that is an amazing achievement. Hat's off.
