Cedar also makes wonderful fishing floats whether roughly whittled for quick hobo fishing or smoothly carved as time passes at the fireside. Trout split and laid out on straight grain cedar planks by the fire cook wonderfully.

I've used fresh cedar boughs wrapped around my head and held in place with my bush hat to repel mosquitoes around my head, and scraped cedar bark for tinder, but thanks for the other ideas! I'll have to keep them in my bag of tricks!

Great tip Blackie. I never realized that Cedar was a bug repellent. I new from the old timer's Cedar chests that it would repel Moths. Didn't know it worked on all the bugs. Very useful info. Thanks for sharing pal.

Clever... I've never thought of that. Would the same work for pine?

Cedar has a different scent to it with different oils ( although it is in the same family of trees ( Pinaceae ) ). Also if you use pine in with your clothing you stand the chance on getting pine resin all over your gear .

Never thought of using cedar in camp as bug repellent. How about sticking a bough on the dashboard of the truck, under the canopy, and under the hood to also keep the wasps out? That got me thinking about making a cedar spray for my clothes, especially during tic season. How would you go about it and what strength would you use? What's the best way to process cedar bark for the wood stove, the camp fire, etc? Would you use a shingling hatchet for processing bark and kindling? The Woodsman knife is a bit short & I don't know about that 11" Old Hickory if it's thick enough. I think I need a bigger thicker knife. The draw knife came to mind but it's bulky and no way to secure the bark. None of my axes and hatchet have a thin blade which would be ideal.

Many times when I’m deer hunting I will break off a fresh cedar bough and crush it up and rub all over my clothes. It keeps the bugs off and is a great cover scent to mask human odor.

This is a good idea but I live in Rhode Island and not to many cedar trees here but we do have pine trees and I have packed my hunting cloths in them inside a plastic bag what i am wondering is if I add cedar chips to the mix will I get the same results you are talking about I have used cedar net bags for years to repel wild rats not domesticated ones and other pests for a while now and know it works for that but I am wondering how well it works combined with regular pine bows with my hunting clothing I love hunting hemlock and from pine trees with my bow and muzzleloader but am always fighting with skeeters and mats. Will this help against them?

Most bugs are so insidious they will still get at you despite using a cedar deterrent. But it does make for a hot crackly fire if you burn it.

Way late to this presentation and discussion. The berries are not a true berries, but a cone. They can be used for spicing up game, which I've done with version and squirrel and of course in flavoring gin
