We need a whiteboard session on this, I partially get it until the verbal explanation runs past the 3D cube diagram. The methodology for the system classifications past the sector name being tied to the succeeding alphanumeric coding structure, never thought about it until now. Definitely a useful exploration skill. It's the mention of an overlapping factor as opposed to top down grid viewing in the starmap that I'd like to get further into, hit us with the PowerPoint man that part dragged me away from the comfort of Cartesian into the parent Euclidian expanse of comprehension and being a point and go to guy, I want to keep it simple 😅 I'm trying not to count on my fingers in front everybody here, sorry lol

I have been learning about how the proc gen works in Elite for a very long time and have spreadsheets that would make your head spin. An interesting observation is that the game only populates the largest systems at the upper and lowermost subsectors. For example in central sectors H class systems stretch down to ~3800-3900 LY below the galactic plane, G class to ~3280 LY. You will never see D or A class systems that low. That then varies depending on where you are in the galaxy, some areas have sectors stacked 6 deep, some only 2 deep. Then you have to think about the non procedural systems too. Really a lot goes into it.

I have screen shots on my phone of systems I found interesting. Looking at them after watching this presented one or two surprises. For example there is a system between the bubble and HIP 36601 that has an A type star orbited by a black hole and a neutron star. That system is a B mass system. Being between the bubble and 36601 the region is well mapped but I still think I'm going to head out there and look around more.

Definitly a usefull guide. Cheking every sectors AA-A H system probably reveal something interesting. However you can just simply filter black holes and neutron star in the galaxy map, as non sequence stars. This category only shows the main star. The main star is always the system heaviest, and black holes and neutrons are heavy. So if a star is more heavier, then the star must be a rare WR, O, B (maybe A for neutrons) star. So simply add O, B and Wolf Rayet to the filter too. After that, the galaxy map also show the ditalied information which type of the stars the system has.

Dunno if this bug works, but the galmap search was sort of buggy in odyssey last time I used it. If you straight up start typing a name in the search, chances are that few results or nothing will show at all. But, if you focus on a system, either by double clicking it or waiting for the camera to focus it after you select it from the search, now the search bar will work waaaaay better and will show pretty much every system that matches what you type. Pretty neat if you are on the hunt for wolf ray stars or in the rim trying to sweep for previously unnoticed systems further in the black.

And if u type in a System Number > 2^50 you crash the game. Oh and the missing 0-[SystemNumder] is implied, if you type them out you still get the right System. Insted of AA-H15 one can also type AA-A H0-15. Also the LetterCode can overflow for example Type BA-A H0-15 and it will find a system (if a 15 exists) one 1280 further in the x-direction boxel. Basicly if whats in the Search bar is not found in a Lockuptable it will Calculate the 64bit System Address for what u typed. SystemName 64bit Address. there interchangeable.

Wish you would have explained in the galaxy map when you pulled up the name drop down, the first part of the list just had stars next to two sets of the same name, then after 20 or so was the first system that showed a star system icon and just a single name. When I tried looking up the sector I'm running around in when I selected the names where it has a couple stars and double name, it took me to an area with no star system.

i actually HATE this feature of Elite. it means all the nerds have basically found the biggest stars (they're all end in AA-A) simply because they guessed the naming algorithm. the game needs to be purely random, no one should have any exploration advantage because they're reverse engineered the game.

I've been trying to understand some things about the procedural generation. If I understand correctly, when I jump to a system the system procedurally generates while the system loads. Here's the part I'm not sure of, is the galaxy map itself and the general location of the systems also generated on the fly when I open the galaxy map or was that part done during initial development? If that's the case I'm assuming that that part was done with some sort of automation.

This is fantastic information but I still don't see the pattern in the boxels. I'm checking out a sector, and the boxel AA-A *30 is closer to BA-A *30 than AA-A *20. This pattern returns many times in this sector. However sometimes counter examples are found. could it be that there are different overlapping boxel grids, depending on the star system?

The mass code just gives an upper limit on what type of star will be in a system - e.g. Wolf-Rayet stars are generally only found in H mass code systems, while A mass code systems will generally only contain brown dwarfs and protostars. Black Holes and Neutron Stars are found in mass codes D through H.

I still don't understand how the higher orders work. JM-W f1 seems reasonable. Converting it to standard base 26 we get 1mc9, converting that to decimal we get 32769, which is one higher than 16384*2. CA-A f4 doesn't though. Converting it to standard base 26 we get 4002, converting that to decimal we get 70306, which is much higher than 16384*3+128*3+3.

This is true and not true at the same time as Elite: Dangerous seems to have different densities applied to various sectors. The AA-AH (from memory) prefix usually means “here be a massive stellar body” but there are exceptions to that rule. Where sectors get truly dense and populated, the game can actually run out of AA-AH designations as the stellar forge only counts up to AA-AH 999. Another point worthy of note is that the stellar body which gets the 00 or 01 designation isn’t always the most massive and not is the whole system itself. Generally speaking there are also areas where stellar remnants are more heavily present, the DRYI FREE and DRYI AUCS sectors are proof of this. I have more findings from EDSM which I can share; I’ve got first discoveries on pulsars (PSR J prefixes), Wolf Rayet’s, supergiants (all kinds) and all the stellar remnants & I have reliable ways to replicate all the findings 😉

The amount of black holes in the game is probably so large that supply of undiscovered ones will not run dry anytime soon. Maybe in a couple hundred years ...

I tried this during my livestream yesterday and I managed to find a undiscovered black hole within a few hours. So yes they are still out there. Remember less than 1% of the galaxy has been explored.

Many AA-A H System have been visited but there still plenty to go for. The chances to find a NS whit this are basicly 0 I have never seen an NS i Layers G and H maybe as a secondary. WolfRayet are the ones most go for.
