@@hannahdyson7129I think it poetic. She started our naive and desperately wanting love to her own detriment. She learnt how to be independent and her own woman but then managed to find love even under her disadvantages of unmarried woman with a child and him breaking it off at first. She overxame it all and came out with marriage, children and rank.

I think Bertie was a good man. A bit boring perhaps, not particularly good looking, but not unattractive either, but his character is solid and his intentions true. He's a very dependable man and I think that is a quality that outweighs the rest by a long chalk. As for Mary, I liked her character. Her setting up this dinner of Bertie and Edith is part of the story of her maturing. Mary has the type of qualities that don't really manifest themselves positively until she herself has learnt to control them, master them and age and experience is the cloth that polished this rough diamond into something quite sparkling. She is the tough one. The one, most like the Dowager Countess, that will be the all-powerful matriarch of the family and the one with the strength to keep it on course and the Abbey and estate with it. I recall the Dowager speaking with Isobel before she went on a trip and just immediately before she paid a visit to Miss Cruikshank saying something along the lines of "...I'd prefer to vent my frustrations on the 'wherever it was' and only return when I have regained control of my tongue...". Not verbatim I know, but I think that this is how Mary will become. She hasn't learnt the art of holding her tongue or how she may lash out without creating discord and upset to the people that matter to her. Mary, is the future star and a post-war Downtown Abbey film with Maggie Smith playing an elderly Mary, would likely reflect that. Perhaps.

Don’t quite get why it’s the “Let’s blame Bertie hour” when she was the one hiding the truth about marigold from him! It’s like, a little accountability and a little less victimhood please Edith.
@Thegoldenvalkyrie11 ай бұрын
Couldn't agree more. Oh, Mary was spiteful when she revealed the truth to Bertie, that's true, but it's more Edith herself which should be blamed for the failed relationship. She had more than enough time to tell him and definitely should have done it far before they were at the state of engagement, she just chose not to. And to be honest, Edith isn't a innocent little Angel either. She has several flawes as well and a annoying "woe is me" attitude at times. 🤷♀️

He was repulsed on discovering who Marigold was . I wish Edith had told him to shove it . She grew up unlike Mary .
@Persei110 ай бұрын
@@hannahdyson7129not repulsed exactly. More like shocked. In those days it was quite scandalous, especially among aristocrats, so you can't really blame his initial reaction. He eventually realised gossip and scandal were less important to him than Edith and he started treating Marigold like his own daughter. I'd say that's rather beautiful.
@Persei110 ай бұрын
She hid the truth because there was a very big chance he wouldn't be able to live with it. Those days were different, especially among aristocrats. Having a baby out of wedlock as a woman basically made you destined to be an old maid.
