Here we see the beginning of Edith's blossoming into the woman she always could be and breaking away from her family's benign neglect. And we have Michael Gregson to thank for it.

@@themermaidstale5008 I would say Isobel's son Matthew is really the one to thank. He is the one who came up with the idea of writing to the newspaper at breakfast, literally after Edith was jilted at the altar.

@@the8thchurch461 Both non aristocratic Crawleys provided much needed support to Edith. In particular, when Isobel introduced the progress of that issue at a dinner and after the subject was hashed over, being derided and poo-pooed by Robert and Violet, Violet snaps at Isobel “then why bring it up!” The reigning members of the family had decreed that Edith wasn’t going to do any such thing. (But perhaps maybe I’m thinking of Edith working at the magazine she had inherited from Michael Gregson). Edith was destined to be a modern woman, both by inclination and circumstance.

Bertie’s a wuss compared to Michael. I think Lord Hexxam rubbed off a bit on Bertie but Michael and Edith together. Wow. I loved when he was waiting for her at the train. Here’s a man who was so sure of his love for her he left her a life of her own with his flat and the printing company. I hate that this actor had prior commitments.

I’ve always thought that Michael Greyson was the anti Sir Richard Carlisle as the only thing these two men have in common is that they’re both wealthy and owners of a huge publishing company. Other than that, they couldn’t be worlds apart from each other!

The whole journalism was my favourite arc of Edith & about this vid: 1) Love in the 1st sight, I miss them every time I'm involved with this show. 2) Can we also appreciate how Matthew cared for Edith? Mary would be more like Sybil if he didn't have to be killed off (which also includes her behaviour as a sister). 3) Such a shame Sybil wasn't there, she would've been so proud😭😭😭

Then Edith invites him to a grouse shoot or some such and Scary Mary, the future Dowager Countess talks snobby and snarky to Matthew. I don’t think he fathoms why she’s carrying on like that. Perhaps like her father, she’s planning on Edith remaining a spinster and taking care of their parents as Edith’s career. RME

I never found Edith interesting and I especially don’t like this whole thing, leading as it does to Marigold and her reckless, selfish, shameful behavior that ruins other people’s lives.

Each to their own. Edith to me turned out to be the best ever. Her storylines grip me every time. And she ended up surprising everyone by marrying higher than anyone could even have imagined. Mary ends up being jealous of her after saying she needs all the help she can get as she is not beautiful. To me Edith is the most fascinating, the Cinderella who ends up marrying her prince. Literally rising from the ashes to kiss her own prince charming. I can never get over her father's shock, disbelief and excitement at Edith marrying way higher than Mary and outranking her whole family. Anyway, people see things differently and that is fine. Personally, I love both sisters and sympathize with both. They were both victims of the social mores of their time. The Marigold situation was a result of Edith not getting the support she needed in the family because Mary was the main focus. Not even once did her parents think of supporting her to find a husband. She had to navigate that world alone, hence the Marigold situation. Think of it, if she knew that her parents were on her side, she would have counted on them to bring the child into the house. If you are unsupported, you are bound to make huge mistakes. Even Anthony, the man who jilted her at the altar, was meant for Mary. Very unfortunate for her.

As the 8th Church said, to each their own. I've always been a fan of underdogs overcoming the odds and proving their worth, hence why Edith's story always resonated better with me than Mary's did, with Edith being the unfavorite and Mary the golden child. I should also point out that Edith's actions in the Marigold storyline were in part motivated by a desire to protect not just her reputation but Marigold's as well, and trying to stay part of Marigold's life in a time when claiming her and admitting the truth about her would have meant social ruin for both of them. Neither of those motivations were selfish. While I agree that Edith could have tried to be more sympathetic to the Drewes, I'm not going to criticize her for trying to find a way to stay a part of her child's life when it would have been impossible to claim her.

@@coffeebean8790 Stories of overcoming adversity lose their ability to inspire if they end with the protagonist joining the elite set and lording it over those who haven’t rather than learning compassion for those they pass along the way. The Marigold thing. Edith was too cowardly to face the consequences of the truth, so she should have committed to a lie and let the child go. Marigold could have had a very happy life with adoptive parents; countless children do. But Edith was determined to have it both ways and-like any plucky disadvantaged underdog would-used her privileged position to pass along the devastating consequences to the less well-off. Mr Drew tried to help a friend in need, and she ruined his life. I’m unable to look past that. As for Marigold’s social standing, she was seen by others not as the grandchild of a lord but as some pathetic foundling taken in by an eccentric spinster. Hardly an improvement. This doesn’t mean I’m Team Mary, by the way. I didn’t find her particularly interesting either, except as a supporting character in other storylines: as a spur to Robert to modernize; as a young adult trying to support Rose’s independent streak while still guarding her against the results of her bad decisions; as Anna’s and Bates’ dogged if often stifling protector; as the first person whose sympathy reached Barrow through the darkness; and especially as the avatar of the future in its complex relationship with the past, as embodied by Violet. Edith never seemed to have much of a role to play in others’ storylines, which adds to my impression of her selfishness. But as you say, to each their own. 😊

The Marigold thing went on a bit as a plot. I don’t get actors. They write a storyline for Edith and the actor who played Michael has prior commitments and can’t remain with the series. Well Wtf! It’s impossible for Edith to give up the child from a man she loved so much. He was willing to go through the process to obtain German citizenship in order to divorce. In her day so so so unlike the morals of today, having a child born out of wedlock had great stigma attached.
