@@luckycharms7572 It's been a while since I've watched Downton, but I think it was deliberately placed for Cora to slip on causing her to fall and resulting in the miscarriage of her unborn child. If I remember correctly it was also a boy which is significant because she and her husband had three daughters but no sons, so learning it was a male child complicated their grief. Grief, loss, Cora's physical suffering, death of the child. The point is this was no accident and wasn't a spontaneous abortion mother nature style. O'Brien deliberately made this happen. She had intent. Also, the punishment didn't fit the crime. O'Brien felt slighted by Cora sure. That's understandable and relatable. Her feelings are justified. But she chose to take things to a whole other level when she harmed Cora and murdered the child. And she enjoyed doing it. And she felt no remorse afterwards.

As far as I'm concerned, this was attempted murder against Cora. She was intending to cause any harm possible, and the sheer possibilty that Cora could have hit her head on the tub or floor on the way down and been killed was clearly accounted for. I cannot believe she seriously thought that getting fired justified murdering an unborn child. NOTHING warrants that! She knew how much Cora and Robert wanted that child, that they didn’t want to get rid of it. This was truly an abominable and unforgivable thing that she did. Thomas would never go as far as this; while O’Brien killed Cora’s would-be son, Thomas saved Cora’s daughter from a fire.
@corsariocapitao Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I don't believe O'Brien fully grasped the severity of her actions in that moment or thought her actions were justified. She made the floor slippery, but she could not have known that it would lead to Cora losing the baby. I believe this wasn't a carefully planned act of revenge for being fired, but rather a spontaneous outburst fueled by intense anger. O'Brien is a proud and nasty person. I think she felt betrayed and had a momentary, impulsive outburst driven by her intense emotions. In her anger and belief that Cora intended to unjustly dismiss her, she made a rash decision without fully understanding the potentially tragic consequences. The regret she shows moments after highlights her realization, finally thinking rationally. Personally, I prefer this interpretation as it paints a more complex picture of human behavior under extreme emotional duress, where actions can have far-reaching and devastating consequences, even if not initially intended.

I think we’ve all been there once or twice. A moment - though perhaps not as grave as this - where we had already felt bad for having taken a petty revenge, hurt someone important to us out of carelessness, or said something cruel to a friend out of insecurity. Even though we see in hindsight that it was silly or shameful, we can still hold on to whatever motivated us to feel upset in the first place. They hurt us first. Then we realize one way or the other that we hadn’t understood the situation. That we betrayed that person twice; once when we refused to believe their story, and the second when we took that revenge. One of the worst feelings, as if ice is running down the back of your neck.

If they dont like my guest thats fine, as long as they be polite to my guest all the same. I dont believe for a second people where sacked in edwardian era's for one time being cought complaining. People complain all the time about all sorts of things. As long as they do their job and do it well, there is no reason to sack. Servants are still people. I dont think every noble would forget that just because they are rich. Convinience is worth something also, and having a steady face around is prefered over new faces all the time. This is not wallmart. Servants where not as often replaced if they did their job well and didn't leave on their own accord. Sometimes you have to embrace your suspension of disbelief and just accept the story that the storyteller is trying to tell. All writers are not created equal. All directors, all actors are not created equal. Sometimes you just have to suspend your disbelief and accept the story that's being told.

It is a bit over the top. I had to consider she fell in to the side of the baths edge striking her pelvis violently. Which may have caused the growing placenta to detach from the uterine wall. Granted it probably would have taken several days for her to miscarry....but, alas. I kinda wish some internet sleuth could do a 3D reenactment of the possibilities.

I don't understand how O'brien got away with leaving the other half of the soap bar under the tub. Wouldn't that be carelessness in her work? A baby's death because of it, how was she not fired?
@DogNamedWatson2 жыл бұрын
I mean, Cora literally told her it's okay to leave the other half under the tub
@hollisjo40234 жыл бұрын
I mean, as Dr. Clarkson spoke of, there was a broad chance she would miscarry anyways because of her age, so I was kind of just waiting for her to lose the baby honestly. But when I looked back at this scene and realized Obrian put that soap there so she would fall, I was absolutely shocked and saddened.
@chanaberlove87203 жыл бұрын
How old do you think she was ready? Sybil was 18, Mary was maybe 21. She was at most 42. Many people have babies at that age especially when they have had one before successfully.
@DogNamedWatson2 жыл бұрын
@@chanaberlove8720 You have to remember the time period. Even today pregnancies in a person's 40s are termed "geriatric" and are treated specially + are watched more carefully. This is the Edwardian era, where maternal mortality rates were still extremely high, and they didn't have the same methods of care we have today. My mother had my brother at 43, and it involved taking medicine to increase her progesterone and months of bedrest. I can't speak for all women who have babies after 40, but it's almost certainly harder for them than it is for a woman who is younger

But it is not much of a shock that O'Brien did what she did. First, if we look at her character, she is resentful and bitter. She is also not a very nice person. But I don't believe she was evil. What triggered her in bathroom was Cora asking about opinion on maids which at that moment O'Brien took as being ridiculed. If we take that, combine it with her thinking she will be sacked plus her overall personality it is no wonder she acted out at the moment of rage. She quickly realized her mistake and just as she wanted to rectify it Cora had an accident. Then she spent most of her time in Downton trying to redeem the unredeemable. Certainly a complex character, well written and overall added to the richness of the cast. I miss well written character in shows...

I can hardly imagine how shattered and distraught she must´ve been when she finally collected what she had done and on what basis.. and let´s not throw stones - we all have these moments when we did a "nasty nasty" to someone.. even if the grounds for doing it were unjustified and based solely on merely hints and overhearings.. her greatest mistake was to not being truly open to Cora and using her position to soothe her deflated ego and looking down on the others while tattling to Cora if she ever "discovered" anything "unusual".. sadly her calculative nature was stronger for those two minutes.. and of course she had been plaqued with remorse ever since.. the horror when she realized and the guilt must´ve been punishment pretty much itself.. and looking at it, she didn´t truly got away with it cuz she was forced to leave..

Unpopular opinion but this is actualy the scene that made me like her. She showed a real human side, she did something she knew was wrong, and was on her way to stop it when it went wrong. It wasn't untill after it had gone wrong. Now it was before. She acted in a moment of pure anger, which many MANY people do. If you cant admit to yourself you never would have done something to harm somebody if given the chance in that moment of time after they badly hurt you your lying. We all have ugly moments. Some of us dont realise it's ugly untill way later, if ever. Some realise it the moment they've done something ugly. In my opinion, people who did something, then immidiatly try to undo it before real harm is done, show they are at heart good people who lost to an impulse in that moment. People are not their last act. People do amazing things, and ugly things. O'brian was a damaged and hurt women, but at heart she was not evil at all. She is very human, and maybe thats why people dislike her so much, She shows us a part of humanity we dont like to possess, but know we have in us. She and Thomas where not bad people. They where damaged people who sometimes did bad things. But it does not define them. O''brien looking in the mirror, telling herself thats not who she is, is a powerfull scene to me, as thats a step most people dont even take when they are in their ugly mode. Most have it later. She took control of it fast, sadly not fast enough for Cora but even so. Buisides, Cora should have watched where she stepped.. she is not a helpless child. She knows soap had fallen down there. You check before you step out of a bath! Even more, you hold onto the bath as you get out so you dont slip with your wet feet. Slipping on anything whilst getting out shows a lack of paying attention. That is your own responsibility. People could scatter 20 soap bars next to my bath before I got out and I would not slip because I actualy watch where I put my feet. Why wouldn't you? Especialy when pregnant come on..

The thing is, even if one is careful, you can still miss something if you’re tired or thinking of something else. Blaming the person who got hurt FOR getting hurt because of someone else’s spur of the moment spitefulness is probably not the way to go…
