I was a huge fan of this show in my childhood. I had the calendar, wore a sun bonnet all one summer and used my Holly Hobbie dolls to playact Mary and Laura. As I got older I lost interest, even though the characters grew up as well. Each season seemed to focus more and more on some tradgedy per episode..... and all those events were always neatly taken care of by the end of that show ( or maybe 2 parts but that was the most time they would spend solving it) It got very preachy. It is also hard to watch now since all the revelations from Melissa Gilbert and other sources have come to light. The whole series just seems so hypocritical. That all said, my favourite episode was Sylvie, which I thought was reasonably well done and not overly sugar coated.

This was a family show, centered around that very concept, set in time and placement of the homesteaders. It was not about a bunch of unwashed rootin', tootin', meanest hombres in the west, doing shootouts at high noon, holding up trains, shooting up stagecoaches, or gambling with cards in bars, or chasing away "them dirty injuns". THOSE are "Westerns" of old.
