+DP/30: The Oral History Of Hollywood Speaking as an unbiased third party, it doesn't sound like Virgil hated the interview, just the closed questions and the constant "uh-huh". You're doing good work here, with a few tweaks it could be better.

great job by the interviewer making Samuel Jackson comfortable. Samuel started out annoyed by another interview and the interviewer threw at him interesting question that he was happy to answer.

"Well, that did feel like a conversation--" ... Hahah, that's how I felt. At first he seemed a bit reluctant or apprehensive; but the interviewer got him to open up and speak freely. Very well orchestrated.

This is probably my favourite interview on this channel. I love how you can see how Samuel L. Jackson's mood really changed throughout the interview.
@manIamtheman10 жыл бұрын
Samuel is a very frank, tell-it-like-it-is with no BS kinda guy. And in the film industry he has worked well and bonded with a fair share but also butted heads and scared off quite a few as well. He just has this huge presence that may come off as antagonistic for some, but either way the effect that he has as an actor is one where he commands immediate respect, naturally. In the beginning of the interview Samuel was skeptical about how it was all going to turn out and he certainly had this standoffish aura, but as the interview progressed he opened up more and more and in the end he was pleasantly surprised remarking "Well it did feel like a conversation" which was the intention of this interview and that in my book is fuckin "A+" pass with flying colors. The interviewer asked a range of questions and knew how to steer the discussion, he listened and didn't talk over the interviewee and gave enough space for expression. This was both insightful and entertaining, well done.

It would be immodest to suggest how I get these interviews, but the whole process of developing this series was based on access I already had and turning it from a web/print effort to a video one. And I am one of the luckiest bastards in the world. Also one of the hardest working... if this kind of pursuit can be called "work."

I liked the end where he seemed surprised with himself that some people do actually want to have a conversation ha ha. This and the Christian Bale interview have been two of the best. So much that it seemed like Bale had been unknowingly waiting for a decent chunk of time with a smart interviewer to get in to some stuff.
@retrostyletrailers11 жыл бұрын
"That did feel like a conversation"...that is the way you interview, not dumb questions...having a conversation itself is an interview process. This is why this was so good.

Samuel L Jackson is not afraid to tell how hollywood works even from a high status actors prospective. He is very open about his career. Where most actors will be political and say "Hey I love the fans, I love to travel blah blah blah" Samuel L Jackson says "Well its in the contract" lol.

Directors who don't tap into this man's wealth of wisdom are FOOLS. If you're given the chance to work with this man, LISTEN TO HIM.
@MrBeastknows8 жыл бұрын
+John Burton He doesn't really say anything important pertaining to directors, more for writers. Even then it's just him generally saying "make good shit that entertains." I mean it might help for filmmakers who are trying to imitate hollywood type shit like they were taught in film school, but otherwise nothing really too important or groundbreaking here tbh.
@johnburton37638 жыл бұрын
Shane Benjamson Wow, now that I've heard you state the opposite opinion to mine, I've totally changed my perspective. Total 180. Thank you so much for this revelation.
@MrBeastknows8 жыл бұрын
John Burton But I wasn't stating an opinion. I was stating relevant observations I made, that you seem to have missed when you made your original statement. There ha fuk u I used big words I win the argument.
@johnburton37638 жыл бұрын
Shane Benjamson I've never heard anyone use the phrase "big words" who wasn't an idiot. And I've never met an idiot who wasn't fun to goad. So just for fun, go ahead and defend your assertions. Give your evidence that (1) Sam Jackson can't give much advice to directors, (2) that his advice is one-note or shallow, and that (3) he doesn't know how to make groundbreaking work. And before you respond, be aware that Every Frame a Painting, which is all about the style and work of groundbreaking directors, has already used some of his statements made in this video.

According to Tarantino, he's always the smart ass on set. He's always get something intelligent to say, often at another person's expense. He's a cool dude. I find his work ethic especially admirable. His mantra to young actors is "Know your lines and show up on time and ready to work". He's a multi-millionaire who treats acting like a 9-5 job

I love that he has no shame in saying he watches his own movies. I find it weird some actors don't want to see their performances in the same context the audience sees it. And not to mention seeing the final outcome that took years and grueling effort to make.
@kawaiiafangirl2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's weird at all that some actors don't like watching themselves. Some actors like Adam Driver and Johnny Depp don't like watching their own performances but it's mostly a self-conscious/ neurotic thing. Sam Jackson obviously has great confidence in himself so he enjoys seeing his own performances.

This was a great interview! Didn't think I'd watch the whole 35 minutes, but it was so good I I kept coming back to it. Congrats to the interviewer for being knowledgeable enough and comfortable enough to get such great stuff from Samuel L - we learned a lot about him, Quentin and the film industry. The question he was looking for at 30:00 was "Do you think people get tired of feeling like they need to ask you questions or interact in a way that will allow you to be Samuel L. Jackson the character and not you, as though you have yourself become a character? That would have been an amazing close to this interview. He just couldn't find the words to ask.

For a man that has done 127 movies, it is sad that he was surprised by the honesty of a true interview.
